BBC1 9:40 pm. Who’s watching?!

The script writing was pretty lazy. The writers must know the eldest one cannot act his way out of a paper bag, so why give him a relatively big part.

Also most DCs are sleeping by age 4 unless very , so that bit didn't add up.

You could see that Hugh Dennis is a good actor as he managed to bring some depth to proceedings, by Clare Skinner was absolutely awful and I can't quite work out if she was just poorly served by her lines or just isn't a great actress or both.

All the stuff about the DCs growing up was clunky and kind of weird as you think they would be talking about their DGD instead, but she was hardly mentioned except as a plot device.

It was all rather odd.

It's a shame but it should have stopped at the first Christmas special.

They had a Christmas special in 2012; then one 4 years later in 2016; then the next one 8 years later in 2024.

If they continue with this mathematical formula, the next one will be in 2040, when the parents will be approaching 80; then the one after that will be in 2072, when even Karen will be 71 - and they'll probably have a tender, poignant scene where the three of them take their own grandkids to visit their GGPs' grave!

ChessieFL · 30/12/2024 15:33

The first Christmas special was 2009, after series 2 and before series 3.

Oh, poo - that wrecks my theory!

I only noticed the 2012 one on the BBC website when I looked!

Isn't it just! Nicholas Lyndhurst is phenomenal. Very underrated.

I thought both actors were really good in that episode. The way Del is telling Rodney to be strong one minute, then you hear some awful, heartwrenching sobbing & it's coming from Del

VegTrug · 30/12/2024 17:16

It seemed unfinished to me? As though there was more to come?

Please do not give the Beeb ideas like that. Although I wouldn't put it past them 😬.

Gonksmum · 30/12/2024 19:59

It wasn't too bad, but not a patch on its heyday. It improved massively when Ben arrived, imo.

PyongyangKipperbang · 31/12/2024 02:18

Rewatching as I cant sleep as I am resigning tomorrow (it wont go down well), and figured out why Jake looks like a junkie who slept in a skip.

He just said that he is WFH with a full on 3 year old......guessing he spends his day enteraining the DD and does his work overnight. Guessing that Rani doesnt WFH so doesnt get it.

PyongyangKipperbang · 31/12/2024 02:41

And further.....Rani just said "Zara is a hyena....and hyena's hunt at night"

pincklop · 31/12/2024 04:43

You can't bring back an old comedy show based on kids being silly and fun... after years with a cancer storyline! No one makes cancer funny because it isn't!

Rafting2022 · 31/12/2024 05:02

Zara looked a lot older than 3.

Zonder · 31/12/2024 10:52

The cancer storyline was totally pointless. That is what annoyed me most.

jay55 · 03/01/2025 13:06

Just caught up as was away.
I loved that the kids had turned into nice adults who offered to help with lunch.

I hated how depressing the rest was, the cancer, the random pointless friend, the offscreen marriage troubles.

Absolutely not what I wanted to see over Christmas.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/01/2025 19:04

Finally seen

God that was crap.

Shame

Wallasey123 · 06/01/2025 09:53

This was SO disappointing! I loved this show back when it first aired. I mean nothing major ever happened but love how real it felt, it was one of my comfort shows so i was quite excited for this. It was all so pointless and just really not funny

RaraRachael · 07/01/2025 12:24

Just caught up - used to watch it in its heyday as my kids liked it but this was pretty dire.

Just no to the cancer storyline - yes it's topical and worthy but didn't belong here.
Annoying friend - just tell her to get lost
Zara - very annoying
Stuff with the parcels - just silly
I've never liked Claire Skinner's character (apart from her awful hair style ) She just never seems natural and believable
The kids just didn't seem to have much to bring to the story

Don't reheat old broth as my mother used to say - especially if it's donkey's years old

Late to the party, just catching up on Xmas viewing now. It was good to see them back but it didn't feel the same, the different house didn't help, silly but I enjoyed their previous middle class Victorian esque house even though not in a million years they could have afforded that on their salaries but maybe they got inheritance ... I'm over thinking. Didn't like their new house, silly but it took away from the programme a bit. Zara the granddaughter was ultra annoying, too loud and shouty and as someone else said too old looking to be 3! Very off putting. Story line was meh... was that the last one ?

Zonder · 08/01/2025 21:10

I don't think the new house would be worth more than the old one - it seemed quite small. And maybe it was in a cheaper area. So I'm sure they are ok!

People always say the old house was unrealistic but I don't know why.

You could absolutely buy a decent size terrace in zone 4, (a fair way from the tube) in the early 90s on 2 graduate salaries, especially if your parents could sub you 5 grand each for the deposit.

Yep. Thirty years ago, a similar house in Chiswick would have sold for £140K. Now it would be worth £1.8 million.
