The call the midwife christmas special is on bbc 1 in 2 parts. The first part will be shown on christmas day at 20:00. The second part will be shown at 19:30 on boxing day. Series 14 will start on 5th January. I am suprised that it has not been renamed as the doctor Turner show.

I've never watched Call the Midwife but seen clips of it on (Not) Lorraine this morning and see it's now in the 70s. Was never interested before but think now it's the 70s it would be quite good. Is it possible to just start from this new series or would I need to start from her beginning to understand what's going on?

The thing that sometimes irks is they don't have follow ups on cases, which any long-standing midwife setup would have as mums have more kids.
It's also a bit .. the midwives and nuns enlightening their working class patients when quite a lot of this was women themselves getting fed up and mobilising of their own accord. (Think Dagenham machinist strikers).

Have any of them had cause to mention The Female Eunuch, which would have come out by then

I find it a bit odd that they've never introduced a female GP/ob-gyn/ hospital consultant. They certainly existed in the 60s and 70s, and yet CTM only ever seems to cast men in these roles. Even when it's a training scene in a hospital, it's always a group of young men standing round the bed. I wonder what the figures for women entering medical school and qualifying as doctors were in 1970? (Although they were invariably called 'laydee doctors' and continued to be by my parents etc.)

Dr, and - especially- Mrs Turner would not stand another FRCS on their patch.

I’ve recently been catching up on episodes I have missed and when Fred was in the ICU with tetanus the consultant there was a woman.

I recall a female detective sergeant in an ep a couple of years ago.

My mum grew up in a small village during the late 60s and 70s. There was only one gp. However the gp was female.

I think it was series 11.

I have not seen the ‘coming next’ for this week’s programme.

I've just caught up with last week's episide, and can confidently say I'm never recovering from Dr Turner saying "Sometimes when you get lucky, you get unlucky." with a wry smile.

Nothing will be ok again ever.

Is Dr T going to prevent Spina Bifida single handed today?

MintSpiesAtTheReddy · 19/01/2025 20:05

Toddlerteaplease · 19/01/2025 20:06

The relaxation class is actually not a million miles from some of the hypnobirthing and NCT sessions I gamely went to when pregnant with my first son. When I was in labour with him I remember hissing to DH "fucking hypnobirthing isn't touching the fucking sides"

Bit worried about tonight's episode.. Hope it doesn't upset me too much...

TwinklyFawn · 19/01/2025 20:14

My grandma was discharged from hospital with a cafiter in 2003. She was really uncomfortable. She had it removed a week later.

We've already had a spina bifida story. Cruel in not getting mum have a cuddle though.

They've repeated many of the stories, they've run out of storylines

MintSpiesAtTheReddy · 19/01/2025 20:23

It's a sad storyline but I quite like the repeat of older topics again. It's more realistic and perhaps gives a chance to show changing attitudes or reactions to similar issues.

Are there no other doctors at the practice either

LIZS · 19/01/2025 20:31

Apparently not for miles around, until Dr Timmy returns.
