The other thread about this programme has descended into a discussion about casting so I’m starting this one to talk about what a fantastic piece of television this was. The build up of tension, especially over the last two episodes, the downward trajectory of Cromwell’s career, the seeds of his downfall sown along the way are all so finely portrayed . Tears were shred for the final episode, especially watching the emotion of his protégés and loyal (until loyalty was impossible) men. Not a typical rollercoaster, but a rollercoaster ride nonetheless.
