So happy I found this thread. Thought I was the only one who understood 'a purple pim' or Hurn the Hunter or was petrified of Abner Brown (who I later discovered was married to Maggie Smith)

Another bit of trivia, Patricia Quinn who plays Sylvia Daisy Poucher was Robert Stephens' partner until his death.

Time and tide and buttered eggs wait for no man.

I've watched it many times, and read the book repeatedly too. Convinced DC to watch the first episode this week. DS8 liked it, DD6 found it too scary so DS and I are going to watch the rest as little treats another time

I must dig it out and read it, it's one of my absolute favourite Christmas books. So atmospheric. I have it on dvd but we don't have a dvd player at the moment. Don't have access to BBC iplayer either, it doesn't like Ireland.

I loved this as a kid, so took DH to see the play at Stratford last Christmas. He's a bit older than me and was 14 when the BBC version came out, so never watched it, and really didn't get the stage show as a result.

But I started watching it on Sunday night and he loved it, shonky special effects and 80s synths and all! It was so terrifyingly magical and cutting edge at the time! It's required watching every night now Xmas Smile

I haven't watched it since I was very young, but adored it and can still remember the way I felt when I saw the wolves running. Can't wait to watch it again as a nearly 50 year old!

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 10/12/2024 19:58

I love it. I was taken by how many similarities to The Dark is Rising . I suppose the folk memories like Herne the hunter were to be expected but hiding in a painting was a plot device in Silver in the Tree, I think.

suburburban · 10/12/2024 22:14

I watched all the episodes but it's weird that it is never as you remember it

Yes isn't there a very similar phrase in 'The Dark is Rising'? to 'the wolves are running' from BOD?

I'll have to look it up now but I remember at the time thinking it was almost identical.

I love, ‘I haven’t a tosser to my kick!’

She also played Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show.

Sorry @CrossPurposes, didn't quote you properly there!

PowerTulle · 11/12/2024 09:24

Another annual watcher! I remember as a kid desperately wanting to wake up to find a pony on the lawn! And Abner Brown is still terrifying.

Thanks so much I watched this years ago with my eldest. Whatever happened to the remake that was supposed to happen about 10 years ago?

I shouldn't advise this but if you got hold of a dodgy box you could hypothetically access it there.

Never seen this before. Just watching episode 1 now!

Very retro isn't it?!

Enjoying it so far! 😃

Shinyandnew1 · 04/01/2025 16:31

I have just started reading this and am confused! I've got to page 67-Cole has just vanished off into the painting at Seekings, Caroline-Louisa has gone to help her sick brother and Kay is shopping in the village but has overheard the dodgy me talking to the 'chief' about 'little Abner' being in his tantrums.

Kay muttered, 'so, it's Abner Brown and his gang again' but I can't see that anyone's mentioned Abner Brown before at all, let alone his surname?!

SpeculatingRooks · 04/01/2025 17:09

Box of Delights is the sequel to The Midnight Folk which is where Kay comes up against Abner Brown first.
