But we seem to have had more Sambas than contestants so hopefully we don't have to sit through another one until next year.

Best not watch the hotly anticipated Sambathon runningupcurtains Grin

Oh god, I'd wiped from my brain forgotten that they are shoe horning in more bloody samba! 🪇

ellebelli · 11/11/2024 12:17

Really don't enjoy watching the samba or salsa, usually because most aren't up to it.
I was sad shayne went, I always forgot about him but did actually Like a few of his dances.
Tasha rarely gets mentioned on these threads and I find her and alijaz the least likeable couple(probably because I'm pissed they brought him back and he bloody annoys me)
Montell and Johannes are another couple I don't enjoy..cant say I've liked any of their dances either.
Saturdays paso totally ruined by the awful music.
I don't have any one that I really want to win this year, which is unusual as by now I usually have a clear favourite who I'm rooting for.
Liking jb now more he's with Lauren however.

MarkWithaC · 11/11/2024 14:44

Tasha and Aljaz: meh. Agree with Craig a QS is't complete without a bit of Charleston character and a pendulum step.
Montell and Johannes excellent.
Jamie and Michelle: she was smoking, he still looks like someone's little brother. He's clearly popular though.
JB and Lauren: didn't love it as much as most here and the judges seemed to. Costumes looked like those fabric bins in a charity shop. I could practically smell the crimplene.
Sarah and Vito just odd, not good choreography. Vito's 'cartwheel' was like when a 3-year-old shows you their cartwheel and you have to pretend to be impressed.
Didn't mind Pete; he danced with feeling and musicality, which he didn't have at the start. He's visibly improved and fallen in love with dancing, which I love.
Chris and Dianne mindblowing, especially the lifts and the chair stuff. And FUN. Dianne has seriously come into her own this year and I applauded when Anton said that about the little separate trophy.
Wynne and Katya: I missed the dress trick Confused . Thought he had more style in the DO but he is a bit lumbering.
Shayne and Nancy: respectable for a blokerumba, but he clearly wasn't that popular with voters.
The DO decision was a travesty. Utterly meaningless to save the more 'joyous' dance when the other dance is a rumba! Katya was clearly expecting to go home and was hyperventilating.
Ball and Boe sounded like drunk blokes yelling in the pub. Fucking racket.

They used to do this in the early series - I think there were two dances each week and everyone did one of the two. Much easier to compare the dancers and no accusations of favouritism etc. (e.g. Pete getting the free pass to Blackpool thanks to his dead nan while others did technically
much more challenging routines). I suspect that as the show has grown the producers feel it would be boring to watch 8 jives and 8 argentine tangos so have ditched that approach.

Couples choice should go IMO. In a few cases it’s brilliant, where the celeb gets to showcase a different kind of dance to music they love (e.g. Punam, Jamie from Made in Chelsea), but mostly it’s all about wafting around barefoot emoting about a dead relative or pet, or being bullied at school, and is really tedious.

Yes, it used to be half of the couples did the same ballroom and half did the same Latin. They'd start with a cha cha or a waltz, IIRC, as they were considered the easiest in each group.
The difficulty ramped up as it went along, so you didn't get rumba, AT, samba etc until later. That meant there were fewer dreadful 'comedy' sambas done out of desperation with a sleb who couldn't manage it.

Strictly should Ban The dead Nan

gotmyknickersinatwist · 11/11/2024 14:55

I wonder if they save the dead nan sob-a-thon for when a dancer might be at risk 🤔

Totally agree, he seems to be really enjoying himself, and I find him really likeable.

I really wish it would go back to that! So much easier to compare dancers and was fairer to the celebs I think.

I’ve not really enjoyed this series but I’ve gradually been losing interest for a few years. Think I’m just fed up of the ‘novelty’ weeks, the ‘faffing’ at the beginning of dances and weird music choices.

The whole thing is getting steadily more loud, 'busy' and desperate for viewer attention. I feel like they don't trust viewers to watch unless there's a sob story, a million different dances per episode, music (even for dances it doesn't suit) by current pop starlets, a ton of CGI, lots of props, endless 10s…
The whole show needs a reset IMO.
And yes, I know I sound all 'I remember when this were all fields' Grin

xsquared · 11/11/2024 16:17

Arlene Phillips has posted she disagreed with the dance off decision. Take that Shirley!

I've been saying this for a while but it's been dumbed down every year. I don't mind lesser known celebs from Love Island or even Tik Tok as we get to know them, but I think it's part of trying to appeal to a modern and younger audience.

What makes me sad is the gradual watering down and erasure of the classic 10 dances in favour of the Couple's Choice and speciality dances early on. Get rid of CC completely, but save the Argentine Tango and Charleston when the confidence amd foundations are strongly built. As we have seen so far, neither ATs from Sarah or Jamie have been spectacular which could have been had they waited until week 10!

Judges panel. What a joke. Only Craig left who remains objective and consistent. I notice that neither Motsi amd Shirley screamed at him this weekend d gone, but that was really getting on my nerves when they kept cutting him off. It's all fine very pantomime.

Yes, I'm still here watching it though!

KimberleyClark · 11/11/2024 16:34

januaryjan · 10/11/2024 21:29

Unfortunately, you have a point.

Gone are the days when Bruno would be hanging over the judges desk, just to get a better look at the celebs footwork, so he could critique it properly.

Now it's all butts and big bare chests on show - and skimpy corsets with suspenders.

-and that's just the male dancers.😁

I miss Bruno actually. He wasn’t afraid to be brutally honest but he did it with a twinkle in his eye and could be hilarious. Alll the current judges, even Craig, seem to be afraid of being that now.

KimberleyClark · 11/11/2024 16:36

Couple’s choice needs to go. It adds absolately nothing to the show.

Agree.

BogRollBOGOF · 11/11/2024 17:48

Couple's choice tends to be good for letting a couple shine and show their strengths against the medicore. I'd just ban maudlin contempowaft.

musicalfrog · 11/11/2024 17:54

Just while we're having a moan.... 😁

I'm sick of all the CGI at the start of every dance. Sometimes I have to study the screen for a while before I spot where the dancers actually are.

KISS - KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID !!

TennisWithDeborah · 11/11/2024 18:28

To continue the moan … 😆…. I’d like the results to be broadcast on Saturday night, live. I know some of the regulars on here are unsure about this.

It could be recorded/downloaded for young children or elderly viewers who can’t stay up, to be watched on Sunday morning (I appreciate it’s family entertainment to be enjoyed by the very young and the very old as well as us lot).

I like the happy ones like Oti and Bill and Faye and Gio but hate hate hate the wafty sob fest ones. Bobby's last year was awful and made everyone cry and Pete's at the weekend was the same.

I watch Strictly for light hearted fun entertainment. I don't want to hear sad stories and see people crying. I cry very easily (even some ads make me cry) and purposely avoid sad films, any dramas I think will be sad and most animal programmes as they are nearly always sad.

I think the shows at the beginning are already so long so not sure if I could sit through three hours of Strictly on a Saturday.
Maybe after Halloween week when the contestants are halved. Or if the filler singing acts aren't on so it's shorter.

Yup not keen at all.
Perhaps steps based on actual ballroom or Latin but not contemporary stuff.

The song choices for Blackpool so far are dire. Using mainstream pop songs for almost every dance this series is getting really boring. Where's the variety?
