Okay
YOU GUYS READY?
So here's the test...

I've ordered the above from the highest downwards alphabetically.
How many can you actually remember? <cackles>

Caveats re this ranking

  1. Craig had Covid when Tilly danced, ahem
  2. In Covid times, 6 routines only had 3 judges - I've divided by 3 and added on a fourth to try and square it
  3. Have only counted original score not reprises

Good luck!!! Shamrock

I don’t remember most of them! There’s
only a handful that stand out.

Oh and best/bitchiest comments from DS/Tattle life

Sarah/Vito - "cunniliftus"
Aljaz - his slight tummy has improved his gapping (ouch!)
Chris - Chris Hollins but blind (oof!)

I agree about Chris. It really looks like he is going to win and I don't think he deserves to.

As I have said before, for a blind person he is amazing but as a dancer he is not that good

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 10/11/2024 08:47

I remember Tilly’s because I think it was the really stompy one that I hated and am astounded to see it right at the top of that list.

Ones I remember because I love them: Rose, Bill and Faye. Those are the only couples choice dances I seek out on YouTube to watch again.

Whenever I see Max’s name all I can think of is that awful Simpsons dance he did which gave me nightmares.

I disagree. The only dances I've wanted to watch back a few times this series are Chris's waltz, and last night's. Watching last night's, his synchronicity with Dianne was better than many of the other couples, which given he can't see her, is incredible. He has to put in far more than others to be able to do what he's doing. There have been many years where the 'best dancer' didn't win (Danny Mac, Colin Jackson, Leyton, Ashley, whoever was beaten by Joe McFadden, Chris Hollins, Hamza etc....) for all sorts of reasons. I'm rooting for Chris.

I love that Chris said that disable people don't need to see themselves but that non disabled people do. It's so true and leads to people 'helping' when they are undervaluing what that person can do and is capable of. Even given the popularity of the paralympics!

I loved him saying this - so true!

I also loved his couple's choice dance - not tear jerking dead nanna stuff but actually great dancing and the black out moment was amazing.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 10/11/2024 11:59

Just on Pete's nan - I do think if you know your grandparents as an adult you can have a different relationship with them than if you only know them when you are a child. This means the bonds can be stronger.

EsmaCannonball · 10/11/2024 12:11

Amy brought out JB's kids' TV presenter side (which never really goes down well on Strictly) whereas Lauren is bringing out the JLS side, which is working much better.

This series is maybe (just, perhaps) changing my mind on the issue of the fairness in allocating duffers and ringers to the pros. It feels increasingly as if good dancers are squandered on certain pros whereas what would be the point in giving the likes of Vito or Katya anything less than, say, a journey contestant.

This series is also making clear that the producers storyboard the celebs as 'types' rather than celebrating their individuality. You just know that Tasha is going to end up dancing to young, female pop singers, that Montell will do a dance to Whitney Houston, that Wynne will be stuck with novelty routines. It ends up making all the series seem samey because every year we see the same journeys.

I'm also frustrated by the song choices absolutely killing some routines stone dead. Tasha danced that quickstep beautifully but the routine had zero impact because of the music. Stick her in a gorgeous dress dancing to a bit of Ella Fitzgerald and the dance would have been transformed. Ricky Whittle and Natalie Lowe quickstepping to Down With Love is what I want.

I loathe Couple's Choice but can't help but feel that Proud would have worked better for Sarah's CC routine. Hopefully this means that when she does do the dread dance it will at least be a big, camp, showbizzy musical theatre number.

gingercat02 · 10/11/2024 12:20

I only caught up this morning. Loved MoJo and loved Chris, that VT and the dance were perfect for a CC.

Katya has really impressed me with Wynne, I thought she wouldn't be bothered with someone who looked to be the series duffer, but they have been great.

Couldn't really care about anyone else.
I'm a big EE fan and like Jamie's character, but I can't gel with him sadly.

Don't do reality tv (or Miranda), so I have no knowledge of most of the others, and none of them have grown on me.

EsmaCannonball · 10/11/2024 12:29

I sometimes find Katya's choreography a bit all fur coat and no knickers but the one thing you can say about her is that she is always invested no matter whom she gets.

Go!!

The couples choice I liked best / remember the most are:

Faye
Rose
Bill Bailey
AJ
Caroline Flack
Will
Alex (poor Kevin!)
Kelvin, liked the song and enjoyed the performance tho the routine wasn’t particularly special

dapsnotplimsolls · 10/11/2024 12:44

I really didn't need to be reminded about Grange Hill. Thanks. 😁

HoopLaLah · 10/11/2024 12:47

Oh, and I can remember Helen and Mein Herr but wasn’t keen on it.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 10/11/2024 13:22

Caroline Flack's contemporary (which most would agree was beautiful even though she was trained in it) was her showdance. They hadn't introduced couple's choice as a thing in her series. It came four years later (2018) perhaps to showcase Ashley, perhaps because they'd been doing it in the US since 2012/13.
Lauren (the Paralympian) was the first to ever do one.

I've loved Punam's and Eddie's last year, as they're both concepts I'd have picked but I hated Molly's and Krishnan's with a passion.
Max's was a cheese dream but funnily enough, DWTS took it for Mark Ballas and Charli d'Amelio to use for jazz in Disney Plus week (movie week by any other name with added advertising). It was just as weird. Interestingly, Charli also did a contemporary so is a Glitterball winner, and ringer, who ended up doing two couple's choice genres and a freestyle.

I loved her contemporary actually - it was about anxiety with Mark Ballas playing her anxiety/self-sabotage (In the same way I liked Bill Nighy playing Florence's anxiety in Free) but I think that's probably because it's relatable (same reason I loved Ashley's freestyle). I'll post it on the video thread.

I do think having the couple's choices dilutes the showdances though. I guess it's only good for a sleb that wouldn't have made the final (e.g. Punam).

RememberRememberTheMonthofNovember · 10/11/2024 13:56

The only CC I remember is Rose’s, but I do have a poor memory.

The blackout bit was interesting as I don’t know how they managed it. There are always some lights on in a space open to the public, eg emergency exit lights, and the dancers were both wearing white which reflects any light. I must watch it back: I wish the blackout had been a bit longer.

This isn’t just a dancing competition. Viewers are asked to vote for the couples they want to see again next week, not the ones they think are the best dancers. I would be delighted to see Chris win. The ringers are enjoyable to watch but they don’t have to win.

The judges judge the dance-off in terms of dancing proficiency, I think, so we can lose otherwise worthwhile couples that way.

RememberRememberTheMonthofNovember · 10/11/2024 14:39

ETA: I’ve rewatched Chris and Dianne’s dance. There are two very short periods when it’s a full blackout, interspersed with sections with the musicians’ lights and sometimes the spotlights.
The cameras are facing those lights. There may be no lights in the rest of the studio, or loads.

FrothyCothy · 10/11/2024 15:11

Watching on catch up. DD just described Johannes’ outfit as a “butt cape” 🤣

TennisWithDeborah · 10/11/2024 16:36

I loved Susanna Reid’s paso with Kevin. That was one of my most memorable.

My favourite pro over the years was Giovanni. Loved his Halloween and musicals week dances with Faye and pretty much everything with Debbie and Rose.

BogRollBOGOF · 10/11/2024 17:03

Ah yes, the Grange Hill dance. A bit hamstrung by the BBC theme tune anniversary week!

It was great not having a themed week. The contestants all were recognisably themselves and costume were much more flattering.
