Did I dream this cancelled show? Late 90s, documentary/reality

Does anybody remember a documentary/reality series in the late 90s (1998 or 99 I would say) that got cancelled after only 1 or 2 episodes were aired? It was on terrestrial, so maybe BBC 2 or Channel 4.

From the little I remember, it was about a village with all the different 'characters' that lived there. I think it got pulled from the schedules because it turned out there was an undeclared conflict of interest - something along the lines of one of the producers being related to one of the people featured or similar.

Neither the show itself nor the reason for cancellation were particularly exciting from what I remember, but now I've thought about it, it's really irritating me.

Any ideas? I've tried googling to no avail.

It was definitely late 90s (because I was living in a particular house at the time).

It was based around a village or small town somewhere quite rural I think. And the only reason I remember it is that it disappeared from the schedules after the start of the series for a (very dull IIRC) issue with the production company. Might have been the BBC that dropped it.

No, it was definitely set in a village or small town. Possibly Scottish? Yorkshire? It wasn't a 'challenge' type show such as survivalist or historical re-enactment, just a documentary about people living in one area.

I don't even know why it's suddenly started to annoy me that I can't recall the details!

It wasn't The Village was it? Set in Bentley in Hampshire and directed by the late Nigel Farrell who went on to do A Place in France.

It was called Cumbrian Tales and the description of both the show and the 'scandal' are as dull as I remember!

We loved that programme. There was a Swedish(?) lady who ran a beauty salon, an old chap (widower I think) called Tony, who had to learn to cook and look after himself, and another guy - can't remember his job, but he used to do part-time entertaining as Elvis.
I may be wrong but I think it may have been the village where Fergie, the Duchess of York's family came from.

Nope, misremembered , Fergie was from Dummer, a short distance from Bentley.

I was brought up in Dummer. Fergie was a bit of a local celeb.

The Village was great - claim to fame some of my dad's family were on it!

First (and last!) episode to be shown on BBC2 in 1998. The entire series, all six episodes, was shown on ITV in 1999.
