Three brilliant documentaries

I wanted to share three documentaries that I've seen over the last year that have stayed with me:

Erebus - tragic, follows the rescuers sent to recover the frozen bodies after a plane crash. It's so visceral and my heart went out to them all.

Misha and the Wolves - follows a the story of a little girl, forced live in the wild whilst trying to find her way back to Germany from Belgium during the Nazi war. It's full of twists and turns - completely fascinating

The Mission - national geographic, tells the story of a young missionary attempting to take the word of Jesus to an island with its own complex native population totally untouched by our way of life and religion. With terrible consequences - so beautifully retold.

Any recommendations for me? Thank you!

I love documentaries, thank you. [Blatant placemark]

Three identical strangers, mind blowing.

Totallybannanas · 29/08/2024 20:52

Where can I watch these?

Pammela2 · 29/08/2024 20:53

These sound great- thanks.

I love a documentary too, not strictly a documentary but ‘Zone of Interest’ is about the commander of Auschwitz and his family living there. It’s shocking and eye opening.

gaggiagirl · 29/08/2024 20:54

Three identical strangers
Tell me who I am
Blackfish

All on Netflix I think.

TransformerZ · 29/08/2024 20:56

Hopefully they sent the preacher packing.

I really liked the one on Netflix about the surgeon, Bad surgeon, love under the knife.

Also on Netflix the one about the conman, The Puppet Master.

Pammela2 · 29/08/2024 20:57

Also Volcano: The rescue from Whakaari is fascinating. About the explosion whilst there were tourists on it. It’s no Netflix I think.

Three identical strangers, mind blowing.

Yes, loved that.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 29/08/2024 20:58

I liked the series about cheerleaders on Netflix too, America's Sweethearts.

musicalfrog · 29/08/2024 20:58

The Australian Dream is brilliant.

MinnieCauldwell · 29/08/2024 20:58

Tell Them That You Love Me on Netflix

An American Nightmare also Netflix

ProjectsGalore · 29/08/2024 20:59

I love all these suggestions thank you!

FortyFacedFuckers · 29/08/2024 21:00

American nightmare
Living undocumented
& when they see us (not a documentary it's a mini series based on a true story but 100% recommend)

leapinglizard1234 · 29/08/2024 21:01

@churrios that is so good and sad isn't it .. also there is one on Netflix called who am I or something which is unreal !! Just awful !

FortyFacedFuckers · 29/08/2024 21:01

Mines are all on Netflix

Moonshine5 · 29/08/2024 21:01

Both from channel 4
Dispatches Terror in Mumbai
Defiance fighting the far right

leapinglizard1234 · 29/08/2024 21:01

@gaggiagirl that's it .. tell me who I am

Just awful! But so fascinating that a family can be so strange

Aquamarine1029 · 29/08/2024 21:02

Talhotblond. Absolutely insane, shocking, and holds a very, very powerful lesson about the dangers of online relationships. I had my children watch it with me, they were teens then, and they both had their eyes massively opened.

Latenightreader · 29/08/2024 21:07

Dear Zachary: a letter to a son about his father. I hesitate to recommend this because it is devastating, but it sticks in your mind. I watched it on youtube.

HotCrossBunplease · 29/08/2024 21:08

Maybe slightly more domestic/small scale than many mentioned here but I really enjoyed
Stranger in my Family on BBC iPlayer. It has more complexity and depth than the usual Davina Mcall or Stacey Dooley DNA type programmes.

BBC Three - Stranger in My Family

Luke searches for his biological father, who mum met on a girls’ holiday in the 90s.

Yes, I’ll never forget it (and I’m forgetful these days). So moving, such an injustice. I think I saw it on Netflix leaving soon list recently so highly recommend going for it if anyone is surfing around looking for something to watch. Will check out your recommendation and others on this thread.

Jifmicroliquid · 29/08/2024 21:31

Totally not the type of documentary being mentioned on this thread but people who enjoyed the 80s cult film Robocop might be interested in Robodoc on Prime.
Its a 4-part documentary about the writing and making of Robocop.

Just incase anyone might enjoy it.

ssd · 29/08/2024 21:37

For Sama

Netflix i think

Documentary about living during the Aleppo uprising in Syria, being young adults, living in carnage and falling in love
