Three brilliant documentaries

I wanted to share three documentaries that I've seen over the last year that have stayed with me:

Erebus - tragic, follows the rescuers sent to recover the frozen bodies after a plane crash. It's so visceral and my heart went out to them all.

Misha and the Wolves - follows a the story of a little girl, forced live in the wild whilst trying to find her way back to Germany from Belgium during the Nazi war. It's full of twists and turns - completely fascinating

The Mission - national geographic, tells the story of a young missionary attempting to take the word of Jesus to an island with its own complex native population totally untouched by our way of life and religion. With terrible consequences - so beautifully retold.

Any recommendations for me? Thank you!

Free solo and touching the void ate both excellent. Free solo is about a climber who climbs without ropes and he's challenged himself to do a really dangerous climb. It's about getting into his headspace and his reasons as much as anything.
Touching the void is about climbers that got stuck and injured and how they got down the mountain.

Mountain Queen on netflix is good, about a female sherpa who has summitted Everest more times than any other woman and has overcome many hard times.

I loved If The Streets Were On Fire, on iplayer. It's about a group coming together to combat gang culture and violence in London by riding bikes.

Thank you for sharing these! They all sound fascinating! Especially the last one.

I love documentaries so much.

I've recently loved 'Daughters' on Netflix. It's about the daughters of a group of men who are in the prison system in America. It's observational and we don't see that style of film making anymore which is such a shame.

Others that have stayed with me are:

'Weiner' about the sex scandal of a New York congressman. The utter brilliance of this is that the scandal unfolded, completely surprisingly, as the documentary team were filming him on the campaign trail to become major of NYC (Amazon Prime).

'The Queen Of Versailles' is about a billionaire couple who were building the single biggest private home in America when the financial crash hit.

I also LOVE 'Kedi' which is the most gorgeous documentary about cats in Istanbul and on that note 'My Octopus Teacher' is also great (Both on Netflix I think).

'Fyre Festival' for the utter madness of it all (Netflix).

'Don't F With Cats' is superb especially if you're into the crime genre (Netflix).

And one that hit me hard was 'Rich Hill' about 3 young poor boys growing up in America. I'm not sure where you can watch it now.

'Jesus Camp' is another cracker (Amazon Prime).

Thanks for those. They all sound amazing. Love docs but not a fan of true crime.

Mumteedum · 29/08/2024 22:11

Wild wild country on Netflix is amazing. How I didn't know about it before, I have no idea. Mind blowing.

Came on to say this - shocking.

rightoguvnor · 29/08/2024 22:24

For something completely different - Race of the Century on Netflix, about the 1983 Americas Cup
I really enjoyed it

Dreams of a Life about Joyce Vincent who died in London and was left undiscovered for two years. It's such a tragic tale and beautifully told by her friends who loved her. I think you may have to pay a couple of quid to watch now but it's well worth it.
