I was absolutely obesssed with Lost on first airing, and, if I'm honest, I still am! I've rewatched 4 times (I think, maybe more) since it originally aired and love that I get something new out of it each time.
To me, it's up there with Twin Peaks (hence username) as amongst the best TV of all time and, like Twin Peaks, I don't think mainstream audiences were ready for it. The move into supernatural territory was quite jarring in both cases and Lost never really suited the episode each week with long season gap model and I'm interested to see what reception it gets now that it's readily availble for binging.
I know it has (many) critics and I definitley wouldn't say that it retained a 100% perfection record during the whole run. There was definitely some filler in there and it was badly affected by the strikes at the time. I also don't really beleive it was being made up as they went along though and it doesn't deserve the harsh critiscm it gets (particularly the final episode), usually from folk who watched season 1 and then tuned in for the finale and didn't understand what was going on. I, personally, am quite critical of the final season as a whole - but not the last episode, which I still think is great. I also still remember the impact of the season 3 finale when it first aired, and then season 4 was by far the strongest - unfortunately so many people had given up by then.
I could talk for hours about Lost, and certainly at the time, I spent more time than is healthy on The Fuselage forum. I remain wedded to the theory that Charles Widmore is his own grandson and expect I'll be babbling on about that on my deathbed. I'll also defend the ending, the polar bears, the supernatural and fantasy elements to the end but will forever be angry about Jin and Sun. Did anyone else have the Bad Twin novel?
Like others, I was a big Sawyer fan. Never really liked Jack but I'm not sure we were supposed to. I'm conflicted about Sawyer these days, finding him quite problematic in ways which were originally supposed to be funny and endearing but, at the same time, I like that he was a very realistic character in terms of his opinions and prejudices.
Love this thread. I'm also convinced that, more than any other TV show, Lost could be rebooted successfully and has been set up nicely for that. I hope it happens.
Trying to write this post with enough info for the fellow fans and hopefully no outright spoilers for those watching for the first time.
