He does look very gaunt and his trousers are hanging off his arse. Maybe he was trying to fit it in around treatment or something. Or maybe he's just skinny and overwhelmed.

I think it's a lovely gingerbread challenge. A very stable shape to make and lots of chance for creative use of colour. They've done a mobile and a pinata before which would have been much harder,

I agree that the standard today is on another level compared to the early series but then the Internet would also be a much more effective research tool now than it was then. I remember the lion bread!
