WEDNESDAY

CHANNEL 4

AN UPDATE ON THE CHILDREN FROM LAST YEAR

Documentary
Child Genius Wednesday 16 April
9:00pm - 10:00pm
Channel 4
1/2
The subtitle of this series about megabrained children is "young and gifted", but by the end you half-wonder if it should be "young and cursed". We're catching up with kids we met in the last series - chess champ Peter (11), who wears a "genius in training" T-shirt, Adam (eight), who dissects rats in the kitchen, and Mikhail (five), who as Britain's youngest Mensa member has appeared on Oprah and Countdown. We also meet Georgia, who toppled Mikhail as Britain's youngest Mensa member. At two, she was measured with an IQ of 152 - impressive given that, being a toddler, she fell asleep halfway through the test. Her mother notes that "a lot of the pictures we take of Georgia have this white light around her . . ." That's the thing: inevitably, parents become caught up in making their gifted children into mini-celebrities, especially when TV crews get involved. It makes for fascinating TV; whether it's great for the pressure-cooker kids is another matter.

Fair point expat
Was she wearing a cream poncho during rat-autopsy or was that a towel draped round her?

I did like her outfit when dropping A at boarding school...

Waswondering - my dh has taken himself to the main pc in the dining room (I am on lappie in front of tv ) and is on money saving expert or a birds of prey forum....
I don't think he can cope with my simultaneous tv watching/typing/sniggering at replies on mn.....

hippipotami · 16/04/2008 21:34

Oh, sorry expat - the dad's wardrobe... Have not really taken that one in, was too busy looking at the mum's wardrobe...

That is one seriously bad shirt. (Adam's dad)

Oh no, Peter is not doing to well in his chess tournament...

Is KerryMum watching this??

ellingwoman · 16/04/2008 21:45

Aaaargh!! Can't believe I've missed half. Blimmin' kids have been playing on the Wii and I forgot

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/04/2008 21:47

What the f* is she doing opening the letter in front of her daughter? That is warped.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 21:48

how is it all these folks have these enormous houses but can't afford a private school?

i don't get it.

hippipotami · 16/04/2008 21:48

Oh gawd that stupid woman opening that letter in front of a 3 year old and then crying. Now the poor little girl is going to feel she has 'failed' at something...
Makes me

ellingwoman · 16/04/2008 21:49

She obviously thought she'd got in otherwise she wouldn't have let the cameras capture that beautiful moment for us

ellingwoman · 16/04/2008 21:49

Her face I mean, not Georgia's bewilderment

coppertop · 16/04/2008 21:50

I can't believe the mother of the 3yr-old just did that. That poor little girl.

staryeyed · 16/04/2008 21:50

I missed most of this. Why was the mum crying? Was that a school for gifted kids or something?

hippipotami · 16/04/2008 21:50

The envelope looked soo crinkled, I thought it was a set-up and she had already openend it once, seen it was an acceptance and called the camera crew in.
I was wrong.

controlfreakyagain · 16/04/2008 21:51

her daughter may be g and t..... but she is a stooooopid cow. honestly, aren't some people bloomin awful.

hippipotami · 16/04/2008 21:51

Was it a state school she was trying for? Because Georgia is only 3, surely she would not apply until she was 4?

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 21:52

why not sell up the mansion and use the money to go private?

why are these other folks testing their other kid?

what difference does it make if he's high IQ or not?

coppertop · 16/04/2008 21:52

Staryeyed - The school was a popular one but the mother was hoping that the girl would be classed as having SN because of her IQ.

I don't think she realised that usually schools will only class children as having SN at the admissions stage if they have a statement.

hippipotami · 16/04/2008 21:53

Aw I am sooo against the testing of Samual. I think they are setting him up to feel inferior to his big brother.

expatinscotland · 16/04/2008 21:54

they also work to get the statement in so they can get the funding they need to support the kid.

we're doing this right now - working with paed, ed psych, HV, head nursery teacher and headmistress.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 16/04/2008 21:54

No - if Georgia has a summer birthday, they will have applied when she's just 3 to start when she is just 4.
