The Paris Olympics are low budget. The stadium is the Stade de France so isn't new and there is no Olympic park like in London as many of the venues are temporary or existing. For example the hockey is being held in the stadium built in Colombes for the 1924 Olympics. As a result it is costing way less than the last few Games:

I am quite happily humming and pretending I know the words to the Celine song last night. She was brilliant.

I've never liked much of the songs that Celine Dion sings, have to say last night was an exception. Also if her health has improved, good to see.

Very good singer of the French National Anthem, so clear that I could lip read it as I had the sound off being on a phone call.

I thought it had loads of magical moments but the BBC and the rain spoilt it somewhat. The BBC had the actual sound turned down so low, you couldn't get the full experience of the performances and the commentators talked over everybody. I think they could have portrayed the parade of performances over the bridges better. I really don't like all this vindictive, boastful shit of we did so much better. 2012 had a good show about British history which only meant something to British people and some comical moments that would have been internationally recognised. The French opening show also had a great presentation of French history and culture and included some celebrities who are internationally recognised.

The tv coverage would be what the French authorities would have provided. I don’t imagine the BBC had their own set of camera there.

“The French opening show also had a great presentation of French history and culture and included some celebrities who are internationally recognised.”

I didn’t get this at all. The culture all seemed a bit ‘Moulin Rouge ‘ to me, which was fine st the beginning with Lady GaGa, but not ongoing.

Alot of people have been offended by the Last Supper scene.

Where was Monet and other French artists?

I’m sure France has done very good performers past and present, but where were they?

French cuisine, considered the best in the world.

Paris, city of love? (Or even Gay Paris using the old meaning of gay. )

I was looking forward to a spectacle, an extravaganza, the wow factor (think Cold Play at Glastonbury, Tyler Swift concert etc), not the 2012 jubilee boat parade.)

I wonder how much the bbc paid Tom Hiddleston for his promo video of Paris? Was much like a Tony moment in the sea of sport coverage today.

Appalonia · 27/07/2024 17:46

According to Twitter, the Olympic committee have taken down footage of the opening ceremony as they've had so many complaints!

LivelyBlake · 27/07/2024 19:09

I think some footage showed that lots of segments were pre-recorded and people hace criticised this.

I rematches the bits in the middle I missed on fast forward. It was much better. I love ' Do you hear the People Sing' from Les Mis in French. If it was compacted into one place I think it would have been much better. The horse on the Seine was beautiful but other things could also have been going on in one place. By the cauldron bit it was like ' bloody hell where are they going now? Rather than 'wow there's the Louvre'

Just been scrolling through Instagram and some of the stuff there is pretty unforgiving. There are positive posts, but I think the main feeling was disappointment, that being there wasn't as good as the screen version, Lady Gaga wasn't live and so on, especially from people who had paid to watch (some tickets were over 2000 euros!) and just feel ripped off.

Its interesting that the main fuss about the last supper has focussed on Christians being offended, but I can imagine many of the more conservative Muslim nations and competitors would have been that keen on the whole drag thing either.

Several commentators of French websites not very impressed watching it with their pre teenage children either.

The horse on the Seine was beautiful

It was. But it went on and on.

Edited

I think if you're a devout Muslim then the singing, dancing, paintings, threesomes and general lack of modest attire will have stopped you watching long before you got to the drag.

Yes. I did wonder how Muslim nations around the world coped with that. It's possible they weren't allowed to screen a lot of the scenes, which doesn't make it very inclusive, does it?

Just spotted Tony in the crowd watching the women's basketball 😍
