We Brits do soggy boat singing better, though, and I will defend that opinion till the day I die!😂

I learnt from this video that there's a cat in hell's chance we'd have risked a soggy piano. We 100% would at least have had a gazebo to hand. Just in case.

eleanorwish · 26/07/2024 23:36

@Supergirl1958 aww you've spoilt it for me now! That's an unfortunate camera shot. At least he kept his dignity after all

Anyhoo in about 5 minutes I decided I could do a better opening ceremony…

location: a stadium as per every other one

Act one: something historical about the French Revolution and some sort of rousing rendition from les Mis

Act two: something based on French artists. Maybe some sort of immersive Monet experience with pretty lights, colours and dancers moving into a segment of the Paris opera ballet. Do some sort of reading of French literature.

Act 3: something themed around beauty of Paris- lots of pretty lights, some French music, something quirky about cheese and wine. Maybe a nod at this point to Disney and bring in either beauty and the beast or Notre damn. Big song sequence - bring in some cute kids. Finish with some sort of fake river seine water sequence blending to some sort of action on real river taking flame to ET. End with the ET being the host to the flame and all sorts of amazing lights. Then end with fireworks in stadium.

Any better?

You missed out the baguettes and the croissants... and the onion sellers.

I did like the champagne bottle shaped torches though. They got that bit right.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 26/07/2024 23:40

I'm pretty sure they did a little bit of a song from Les Mis earlier on.
I actually enjoyed it all, but I was sidetracked on my tablet for a lot of it.
Totally missed lady gaga, but I did think Celine Dion was amazing, and I am not a fan. If you think she has been ill for some time, well done to her.
Vive la France et bienvenu aux jeux olympics!

Izzynohopanda · 26/07/2024 23:41

I don’t feel that I ‘know’ France from that ceremony. It’s all a bit, well, bizarre. High on concept, low on content .

SwedishEdith · 26/07/2024 23:42

Sethera · 26/07/2024 22:57

  1. Tony
  2. Tony
  3. Tony
  4. Tony
  5. Tony

God, he was hot.

HonestMistake · 26/07/2024 23:42

Celine completely nailed that.

The people I felt sorry for were the female singers of the Olympic Anthem choir who'd no doubt spent ages on hair and makeup for their big TV moment in front of an audience of billions, only to end up looking like drowned rats, and in some cases with plastic ponchos over their great frocks.

Blarn · 26/07/2024 23:45

Are we sure no one was Eric Cantona?

And yes, Celine Dion was amazing.

GenderBlender · 26/07/2024 23:46

Fuck me wims. The ceremony may have been utter shit, but your company has been sublime.

Toooo much to process.

Celine fucking rocked. The horse was good, but ruined by the comments asking whether the other horsemen of the apocalypse had drowned.

But the rest, just what? No. Eh? Whhhyyy?

Roryno · 26/07/2024 23:46

You’d have thought they’d have had some lorry drivers blocking roads or farmers dumping manure along the way at some point.

Notaflippinclue · 26/07/2024 23:46

I thought half of it was pretty offensive, surely France has more to showcase than that bloody lot!

There was a stray bollock spotted behind Papa Smurf

I wasn't sure whether I would be allowed to post the photo!

Fairly sure that’s a hole in tights!

My Balloon Will Go Onnnn

Appalonia · 26/07/2024 23:56

All the great painters France has produced, they could really have done something amazing with that, projections on the river, or in a stadium. THAT is something that France is really revered for, not a load of drag queens twerking on a bridge to shit music. Some pp said, we were being scathing as we thought we were better. NO, we WANTED Paris to be AMA ZING, because there's so much to love and admire about FRench culture, but this wasn't it!

Is there an app or something with the schedule for the Olympics? I don't want to miss he gymnastics

Yes. The official app is pretty good.

Gassylady · 26/07/2024 23:53

Yes, I realise that now, that’ll teach me not to believe everything on Twitter without first zooming in on suspected stray bollock!

In fairness to Paris, didn't we mix up North Korea and South Korea in the parade commentary, which was a major cock-up?

It seems the French, not to be out done by the British, managed to do the same thing...

South Korea expresses regret after its athletes introduced as North Korea at opening ceremony

SEOUL, July 27 (Reuters) - South Korea expressed regret that its delegation of athletes at the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday was introduced as from rival North Korea and has demanded assurances from organisers the mistake will not happen again.

As the boat carrying South Korean athletes passed on the Seine, the announcer introduced them as the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" - the official name of North Korea - in French and English.

The announcer used the same introduction when the North Korean delegation passed.

South Korea's vice minister for sports and culture, Jang Mi-ran, who was in Paris, had requested a meeting with International Olympics Committee President Thomas Bach, the ministry said in a statement.

"We express regret that the country was introduced as North Korea at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games when the athletes of the Republic of Korea were entering," it said.

South Korea's National Olympic Committee immediately referred the incident to the Games' organisers and requested that the error will not be repeated.

Absolute genuis.

This thread kept me laughing and enjoying all of it, what a night!
The dancers having a rave on a boat, papa smurf, the countries in bathtub-like boats, parkour, the gold women statues rising up, views of Paris skyline, the 100 year old Olympian and Celine - wonderful!🤩

I've just seen it referred to as "Eurotrash the movie" and I think that sums it up
