Elsbeth - another Good Wife / Good Fight spin off - Sky Witness

Elsbeth – which currently holds a 94% Rotten Tomatoes rating - stars Emmy Award winner Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, an astute but unconventional attorney who utilises her singular point of view to make unique observations and corner brilliant criminals alongside the NYPD.

Viewers will recognise the character from the hit series The Good Wife and The Good Fight, with the new show following Elsbeth as she tackles a new investigative role in New York City.

The series also stars Wendell Pierce known for his roles in shows such as Suits and The Wire and Carra Patterson who can be seen in the film Rustin.

From a few clips I've seen it looked a bit silly, not at all like the Good Wife or the Good Fight.

Has anyone watched?

Is it worth it?

Elsbeth

Has no one watched it.

It looks really silly.

She was good as an occasional recurring character on the other shows; I think she might be a bit much leading her own.

ForGreyKoala · 25/07/2024 05:44

I'm watching it - in NZ - and I love it. Yes, it's silly, but what's wrong with that?

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/07/2024 05:48

It recorded the other night think as i watched good fight/ wife and sky linked it but Havnt seen

AuntieJoyce · 25/07/2024 05:50

I am following because I’ve recorded it to watch it the weekend. I absolutely love Carrie Preston.

DeftLemonDog · 25/07/2024 05:53

I stopped watching during episode 3. So far it is silly. But it’s a King’s production and they did so well with The Good Wife and The Good fight so will go back. I thought they could never top their The Good Wife, but the Fight was even better so there’s hope yet.

Elspeth is a great character but so far they have to give the actors more to work with imo.

Wendell Pierce is a wonderful actor. And I’m liking Cara Patterson’s character a lot so far.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 25/07/2024 06:31

We watched the first episode last night and thought it was good. I am a bit worried that the "silly and underestimated but actually brilliant" will get a bit old. But I really enjoyed the good wife and good fight so hopefully it's good

MattDamon · 25/07/2024 06:32

I thought it was borderline awful. Not anywhere near the quality of The Good Wife.

EricHebbornInItaly · 25/07/2024 06:39

Very silly and weird. Not a patch on the Good Wife or Good Fight, doesn’t have the pithy script or plot lines. The rest of the cast isn’t that great either. I’ll give it a bit longer but can’t see it improving.

RumpleDumple · 25/07/2024 06:43

I quite enjoyed it. I loved her character in the Good Wife/fight and the show is not on that level, it has a very different feel altogether. Yes, it's a bit silly, and has a Columbo like feel to it but I thought it was fun.

CrossPurposes · 25/07/2024 09:23

I think it all depends on how much you like Elsbeth Tascioni/Carrie Preston because it is formulaic (it is more like a Shakespeare and Hathaway than anything else by the Kings). I find her appealing and funny and she and Carra Patterson make a good team.

FragmentedProvision · 25/07/2024 09:27

We all loved it! I wouldn't compare it to The Good Wife or The Good Fight, it's a very different dynamic, but adult DCs and me all found it entertaining and gently positive, which we really needed right now.

Wishimaywishimight · 25/07/2024 09:34

I thought she tried too hard to be 'quirky' and 'offbeat', didn't work for me at all.

mum2jakie · 27/07/2024 16:02

I didn't realise this was a spin off. I haven't seen either of the other series so can only judge this on its own merits. Seen the first episode and thought it was fun. Definite Columbo vibes!

IwantToRetire · 05/08/2024 01:09

I have been recording and haven't watched any so far.

And comments posted make me think I may not bother but ... maybe something to turn to when nothing else or everything else is too depressing.

Its just i remember her from the Good Fight and towards the end they just brought in more and more eccentric and unlikely characters that it go a bit tedious, so maybe have a bit of a grudge as towards the end the Good Fights was nothing like as good as when it started.

I enjoyed it and can’t wait for Season 2. Elsbeth is quirky and refreshing.

OhcantthInkofaname · 05/08/2024 01:19

Its a dramedy - not a drama or a comedy but a mixture. I love it but I love her character.

The good wife and the good fight are both excellent and worth a watch

DeliciousApples · 05/08/2024 09:08

I love her. So quirky.

I loved the good wife/fight.

But do not watch thinking it's the same as the good wife/fight because it's totally different.

Watch one and if you don't like it fine. I wouldn't sack the whole series off without watching at least one just out of curiosity!

As i said, I am recording. And one day when I feel like quirky I'll check it out.

But not that tempted. ie comparison to Colombo is a bit of a turn off.

But think I am going through a bit of a humour by pass at the moment as have in the past enjoyed McDonald and Dodds but series 3 has left me cold. Or rather asleep. I haven't got through one episode!

Absolutely loved Elspeth in Wife/Fight but, like granulated sugar, she's only palatable as an addition to something that needs a bit of sweetening and levity.

This show is just unwatchable. It's self-conciously kooky without grounding her or her world in reality, so very hard to care. There are no dramatic stakes and making her the central focus without giving her any depth just means you only have the most superficial story engine ("I'm nuts but clever"...and?) Its a hard pass from me.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/08/2024 23:21

I was the same @IwantToRetire with macdonald and Hobbs

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/08/2024 23:22

Still haven't seen this. It's on the planner but behind with so much

Anonemouse1 · 10/08/2024 23:46

Give it a miss. It’s not clever enough. The crime solving is very basic and wouldn’t stand up in court. She’s supposed to be like Columbo but isn’t intelligent or annoying in the same way. As a character she seems very basic one dimensional and so do the support characters. The criminal of the week is often a good actor doing a cameo but given a basic storyline so not much to work with. It may have been an interesting pitch but needs about two more years in development for better scripts.

AuntieJoyce · 11/08/2024 07:41

I watch the first two gave up on the third one part way through. I don’t like knowing who the murderer is at the beginning. The second episode was a bit better because there was an element of who did it but it borrowed a lot from Only murders in the building to me.

The characters are like pastiche, I appreciate that that’s probably intentional but it means you don’t care what’s happened to who.

It’s actually really disappointing because Elsbeth was a interesting character and they could’ve done something a lot more complex with it.
