“Spent” BBC Two's comedy-drama about broke Model Mia in Brixton 8th July 2024

Is anyone watching this? I started watching it today, it started 3 weeks ago and airs each Monday, final episode to be aired on Monday 12th August. All 6 episodes are on iplayer though.

I’ve watched 2 episodes and like it a lot, but it is a bit more drama tragedy than comedy. The second episode really shows how Mia is stunted as a young teen, probably due to traumatic modelling industry experiences at that age. She’s so immature but the show is very mature and empathetic towards her.

Wondering what other thinks.

I stumbled on it last night, watched about 4 episodes. I'm really enjoying it. The way she is navigating her situations, the flashbacks to her past.

I find Mia's voice quite distracting at times, she sounds like the bloke in Withnail and I who smokes a Camberwell Carrot.

I watched two episodes yesterday so not as far ahead as you. I agree her voice is distracting, but I think it’s meant to be, to show how disconnected she is from everyone and how stunted she is. It’s So Solid Crew 2001 garage culture. Ella makes the point when she says “How old are you” and then “you sound like a kid. But not a kid now”. She’s lived in America and hasn’t evolved from the Brixton girl who left, plus any trauma from being a child in the modelling industry at the time. Makes me so sad and think of people like Lottie Moss being dragged into the industry age 13yo by her sister Kate and left completely unsupported, though to Kate it was probably all the norm. Mia isn’t reminiscing, she’s stuck saying fam bruv, whilst her best mate has grown up and got a mortgage.

I really hate it when I sign up to watch a comedy and it’s so deep! It’s Fleabag style comedy. This is why I will always rewatch Bake Off 😅

I binged this last week and thought Michelle de Swarte was brilliant. That is actually her accent IRL!

Just watched this and absolutely loved it,utterly brilliant. I didn't find her voice distracting at all. Can't wait for series 2.

Michelle de Swarte is such an exciting talent (and breathtakingly beautiful). I can't wait to see what she does next.

PoppysAunt · 14/08/2024 21:02

Michelle de Swart is brilliant, and I think it's funny but also thought provoking. I also found it interesting that her Mum is Jewish and they have a Friday Night meal with the prayers. It breaks some of the stereotypes about Jewish people.
I thought the scene with the exploited 15 year old girl was quite shocking, but we all know it happens.
I wasn't quite sure about the ending - I don't know what others thought.

KillingMeDeftIy · 15/08/2024 09:53

Michelle's mum is Jewish IRL too, and her dad is Jamaican. The show is basically autobiographical, though I don't know if her father had the same MH issues that Mia's dad does.

PoppysAunt · 15/08/2024 09:58

Yes, I saw that was Michelle's heritage. I thought it was interesting. Did you see the final episode, @KillingMeDeftIy ?
