Drama series about a journalist or writer, filmed by the BBC and it follows the character through his whole life?

I think it was on tv about 5 years ago or thereabouts, a serial not a film.

The main character was a journalist or writer.

It was a novel, not written by a new writer I don’t think.

Erm……bits of it were set in the far east possibly???

I think it ends with the characters death.

What was it? It’s driving me nuts.

Well when I wrote ‘BBC’ I actually meant ‘Channel 4’, they are easy to mix up, right?!
