How child friendly is it meant to be?

Last week was all cute little fat babies and both DC loved it.

Would like to watch it with them again tomorrow, but not if it is likely to freak em out (seeing as I still get flustered about Daleks, I know how it can stay with you )

How old are DC?
Both my DC (8 & 10) love it and have since it returned. Only thing that have really given them the heebie jeebies were flying daleks (yes they can still terrify kids 3 years on)

Nyeh · 11/04/2008 21:49

4 & 2 (oddly enough it is the 2 yr old that is hooked - he woke up a few times when we were watching the last series on DVD and was glued to it!)

My 3 year old neice is an addict. After all its colourful and fast paced. Its a great family programme. Never anything gory.

hippipotami · 11/04/2008 21:53

My dd was 4 and a half when she watched an episode with 'oods' in it last year. She had nightmares for a week

But the daleks never scared her.

So it is hard to say really, because what scares one child may not scare another.

Other than that, no idea how scary tomorrow's one is meant to be. sorry.

Nyeh · 11/04/2008 21:54

I'll let em go for it They can always go to bed if they don't like it (DD is far from quiet about these things!!!)

It is nice to have a family thing that we all want to watch

Don't know if they still do it but last season they had a kids rating on the bbc site. I think 3 children watched it & gave it a fear rating out of 5 so parents can check in advance. Still depends on the child I suppose because 'Blink' last season had a fear rating of 6! (it was pretty scary) but DD (6.5) and a couple of her friends loved it.

Earthymama · 11/04/2008 23:40

It'll be Catherine Tate grimacing and gurning that'll frighten the bejaysus out of them. I'm so sad, this WAS my fave prog, and she's appalling.

Loved the fat babies though, I couldn't see the problem, and Sarah Lancaster was fab.

Nyeh · 12/04/2008 10:06

pmsl @ CT!!!

I think that Blink was much more scary for adults - younger children wouldn't "get" it so much. Will go look at the BBC site now

Yes, 'blink' scared the whatsits out of me [shudder]
But the dc loved it and spent the next week sneaking up on me when I was not looking

PRINCESSPEACH · 12/04/2008 10:38

My DS is 5 and he really loves it he has everything you can think of from Dr Who pens to remote controlled K9 and Dalik. I enjoy it too tho David Tennent is soooo H.O.T

PRINCESSPEACH · 13/04/2008 09:26

Last nights episode wasn't scary (lady made of stone aside) at all. I was a bit disapointed to be honest as I thought it would be a bit more Doctor Whoey if you know what I mean

turquoise · 13/04/2008 09:37

We thought it was a really disappointing episode, esp disappointing because it was apparently written by the Weeping Angels and Face in the Fireplace writer.

The only bit that gave me a slight shiver was when the soothsayer refferred to Rose returning, the rest was rubbish - and far too much screeching from CT.

Crappy acting too, horribly OTT from DT and CT, wheras Quintus or whatever he was called seemed about as disturbed by imminent death as if someone had eaten his mars bar.

Phew, glad to get that off my chest! I was cross - had been looking forward to it all week.

PRINCESSPEACH · 13/04/2008 09:50

Yes me to oh well lets just hope next weeks episode with the Ood is better!!!
It's almost like DT 's heart(s) aint in it any more

Nyeh · 13/04/2008 11:58

really??? how can such a terrible episode come from the person who wrote the two best ones???

The kids were bored.

PRINCESSPEACH · 13/04/2008 12:03

My son was bored too. We have V+ and he started to record it then asked me to delete it as he said it was a rubbish Dr Who

turquoise · 13/04/2008 12:05

My ds said it was written by the good writer - but he has been known to talk bollocks be wrong.

sonicdeathmonkey · 13/04/2008 12:06

Last night's was written by James Moran - the weeping angels one was written by the (utterly fantastic) Steven Moffat. He's written eps 8 & 9 for this series - am looking forward to them, all of his seem to be brilliant.

crawls back under DW geek stone to fantasise about writing like Steven Moffat and keeping David Tennant locked up in an attic

turquoise · 13/04/2008 12:08

Oh I'm so glad. Marginally less cross now.

I loved Weeping Angels SSOOOOOO much.

sonicdeathmonkey · 13/04/2008 12:10

Yup, Steven Moffat seems the only reliably good writer they've got. Agree about last nights, it was just a bit..... 'blah'. Nearly vomited at the 'household gods' bit at the end - someone should have locked Russell in a cupboard and rewritten that bit

edam · 13/04/2008 12:10

We let ds watch Dr Who Confidential so he can see how the programme is made - reinforcing that any scary bits are just pretend. He's four.

When he was smaller he only saw Confidential, not the actual programme, as I thought it was a bit much for a 2 or 3yo. Blink and Cybermen scare the shit out of me, let alone him! The BBC fear factor rating is quite helpful, although their 4yo reviewer seems to be made of stern stuff.

sonicdeathmonkey · 13/04/2008 12:12

Oh, and to warn you all now, the last FOUR episodes have been written by Russell himself so don't get your hopes up

edam · 13/04/2008 12:14

Oh Lord...

sonicdeathmonkey · 13/04/2008 12:15

I'm going to be watching from behind a cushion and NOT out of fear

luminarphrases · 13/04/2008 12:31

i enjoy the rtd episodes .

and i'm guessing the epilogue scene contained lots of upcoming stuff- the changing of history could have serious repercussions

Jbck · 13/04/2008 15:10

I couldn't find the fear rating bit on the new site, can anyone link to it if it's still there? Ta.
