Fat Friends series - What's a "scabby dog"? 😄

Been ill at home and now hooked on a TV series from 20 years ago, called Fat Feiends.
One of the characters (Alan) keeps mentioning "scabby dog" as some type of food. I can't work out what it is and it drives me nuts 🤣 Asked DP and he doesn't know either. Google searched, nothing. Can anyone help?

Did they say ok so hungry I could eat a scabby dog? My husband says this sometimes, it’s just a saying - there’s no actual food called that.

Isn’t the phrase “I’m so hungry I could eat a scabby dog”? As in I’d eat something horrible because that’s how starving I am.

Is it like a scabby horse? As in ‘I could eat one’? In which case it is just as it sounds - a dog with scabs. But you are so hungry that this is appealing.

Thanks for the quick replies, I just rewinded and they say "I could eat a scabby dog". Makes perfect sense with what you are all telling me - so hungry could eat a dog with scabs.

And here I was thinking of hot dogs and toads in holes type foods. Wondering how I'd missed this in all my years living in the UK 😄 Thanks so much for clarifying xx

My grandad used to say "I could eat a scabby horse between two mattresses". Thanks for the nostalgic reminder!

In my house its a "scabby horse".

It's a saying to describe how hungry you are. I.e you're so hungry you would eat a dog/horse with scabs.

Similar to "I'm so hungry, my stomach thinks my throats been cut"

Oh that's one of my favourites although I usually say I could eat the hind leg off a scabby cat.

OP what did you think of Fat Friends? I loved it back in the day, but watched the first few episodes a couple of months ago, and didn't think it was that good. Ruth Jones' accent was so annoying.

I binged watched Fat Friends recently, having never heard of it before.

Really enjoyed it.
