We just watched Bodkin... what a load of tripe

We thought we could just hate watch it and laugh at the two dimensional cookie cutter characters, ridiculously hammy acting, nonsense plot, and what seemed to be a script written by AI ("write a six episode script set in a small village in Ireland about a trio of characters, one Irish investigative journalist running from a dark past that catches up with her, one American whose optimistic enthusiasm is covering up a painful home life, and a young privileged English woman determined to make her own way in the world")

The only temporary bright spot was a few scenes with a bearded fellow that was a baddie with a heart of gold or something. The poor actor did his best with the script but even he couldn't recover when he shouted in all earnestness "I have a thumb in my pocket!"

I've tried to stay away from spoilers in case you're watching. You might as well stop now though. It's not going to get better.

Hahahaha really sums up how we felt after 2 episodes and gave up. Glad we didn't suffer the rest then if it didn't get better!

You made the right decision 😄

I thought it was rubbish too, DH is the type that wants to watch until the end of the series so I suffered through it all.

Searchingforthelight · 31/05/2024 20:26

Slow
not compelling watching at all
was forced to suffer through it as DH found rural Irish setting appealing
will never get those hours back

I haven’t finished it yet but aren’t the cliches the point? It’s like a darker version of Only Murders in the Building? Ive found it really funny in places, with a good enough underlying mystery, although as I said I don’t know how it ends yet.

therejustbarely · 31/05/2024 20:36

If the clichés were the point I definitely missed it. I think it would have been better if more tongue in cheek, wink wink a bit at the audience, but it came across as a very serious mystery to us!

I quite enjoyed it, although I agree the first episode was slow.

I quite enjoyed it (and I'm Irish)
