Second thread about the BBC Series.

I’m glad they’ve stuck to ‘real people’ rather than ‘social media wannabes’ . It makes the programme more interesting and relatable.

I’ve always wanted to go to Sumatra, now after last night’s episode I don’t know if I’ve got it in me (maybe if my constant lies to myself about becoming mega fit actually materialize!)

I’ve been all over the rest of Asia backpacking with no phone back in the day, and more recently a bit more luxuriously, including other parts of Indonesia, but the sheer lack of transportation and the chaos I think would break me. Say in Thailand, even 20 plus years ago the bus station was easy to find, buses were clean and roads half decent and most people spoke enough English to get from A to B. Sumatra now seems like even with a smart phone you’d struggle.

Eugenie nicking that cab was outrageous. When she said she’d found God I made some sort of noise, which my kids all pounced on and said it’s not fair to criticize someone’s religion…. and I was like well ok but she’s a hypocrite. I give Isobel a bit more leeway because she was at least mortified and was saying they shouldn’t.

Do the teams themselves know how much they’ve got left compared to one another? Because S&V have got loads comparatively and could probably afford at this stage to get a private car all the way through Java. I don’t see why S is still insistent on penny pinching when they’ve lost their momentum and have probably double what the others have left? They need to start just whizzing at this rate. Also people need to buy or get maps even if it costs money to actually get clear where they’re going. The going the wrong way situations have been nuts!

I'm so glad the boys went surfing, and B&J are getting a new found sibling relationship out of this trip. As one of the Masterchef finalists parent’s said “they’re already a winner” and the siblings really have gained something beautiful out of this whole thing. They’ve won in that sense already 🥹

Have a look at Trailfinders for a guided tour. Roads are still a bit scary but it's worth it

I agree. Even Isabel and Eugenie’s squabbling is real (as is their apparent lack of integrity).

I'm really enjoying this series, much more than the boring Canada series!
I love the countries they've travelled through and I love the characters and the dynamics between each pair.
My only small criticism is the editing seems quite off. Like for example yesterday there was some drama about different bus routes, who was going in each direction, which bus route might be faster. The next thing, they are all getting on a boat and the bus drama seems to have been ignored. The editing seems to jump ahead a lot. I noticed it in previous episodes too.
I don't have a problem with the taxi yesterday. Both couples had called a taxi, and E&I were due to leave first so fair game that they got in a taxi first.
I do wonder if a lot of E&I's bickering is down to editing as well. The producers spot some arguments and designate them as the troubled pair and edit it heavily to show that.
I was really touched by Betty's comments yesterday, about not everything happens for a reason. As someone who has struggled with infertility I literally want to punch people when they tell me everything happens for a reason. It's infuriating and devastating at the same time to hear it. Sometimes there is no reason and it's just really shit bad luck.

I agree but the tendency to lean towards everyone having an emotional 'back story' that they use as an overarching narrative gets a bit tedious.

How do we know both couples called a taxi? I thought Steven and Viv had booked one ahead while Eugenie and Isabelle were just hoping to flag one down.

HoHoHoliday · 23/05/2024 14:10

@N4ish They showed Isobel booking a taxi at the reception desk. Then when Stephen spoke to the driver and asked if the taxi was for him the driver didn't seem to know or maybe didn't understand the question.

Ah, I missed that part. Still think they should have shared the taxi with the others but less awful than nicking their booking!

Icehockeyflowers · 23/05/2024 14:19

They both ordered a taxi as they were leaving one minute apart. To be fair the ppl who rang first should have taken the first taxi - uncertain who rang first?
Or they should have just shared into the station at least. But while they can take the same ferry, bus or train, I wonder if it’s against the rules to share private transport?

HoHoHoliday · 23/05/2024 14:20

It would have made more sense to share one taxi, given that they were leaving so close together, going to the same place, and all trying to save money!

EverybodyLTB · 23/05/2024 14:43

Harking back to my backpacking days, I would chat to everyone and always shared whatever was necessary to save cash. I realise it’s a race, but they were going to the same place at the same time so could have had a mutually beneficial deal there. The same with the long tail boats last time. That said! Stephen and Viv are now terribly behind and E&I galloped ahead, that taxi swipe seems to have had quite a catastrophic impact that I assume wasn’t the intention. I guess Eugenie was thinking they’d just be 10-20 mins ahead, not set off a chain of crappy events for their rivals.

Re the sad stories, I will give them this with the editing, I think it adds to the whole thing rather than distracts. I wasn’t mad about them going on about the first to go pair and dyslexia, it felt too much. But for the others they’ve left the sad bits till much later on, and it’s brought context into how I perceive them and rounded off the opinions I was already forming. I think the timing for me has to be right, I’m waiting for some kind of revelation on Eugenie and Isabel as to why their relationship is so fractious. I do feel I’ve gone from finding Isabel adorable to snooty, but then back again to starting to feel like there’s more to all of it and that surely it’s the parent of the dynamic that holds the most responsibility. I has been unpleasant to E a fair few times, but I find E quite insidiously unpleasant and with fewer redeeming qualities. I don’t think she thinks much of her daughter and I sort of forgive Isabel for picking up on that and responding in kind. I know if my kids grow up and we have that kind of relationship, I’d be questioning myself and desperately looking at my own behaviour and trying to improve things - not being like ‘well fuck you then!’.

Despite Betty and James desperately running out of money, they are at least in the cheapest possible place to be skint in. I hope they can stop to work, but the best place to work and build up a store of cash is not Indonesia at all. Plus they’re behind, although I’d rather they got to the end as runners up rather than run out of cash and not complete. Maybe something in a touristy area could bring them a bigger sum, but helping a poor family doing a low paid job won’t boost the budget.

I felt awful when they said they weren’t really eating! I wonder if they’re not eating because the only options are very local and not appetizing to them, or if it’s the money. If there’s things like 7-11 type shops then surely they can pay out for some cup noodles and bananas.

TheCadoganArms · 23/05/2024 15:18

It just seems incredibly contrived at times as producers seek to shoehorn in a very clunky personal journey as well as a physical one. This programme is not the first to do it, the SAS selection and survive on an island type docudramas have all employed this tactic. Person struggles with task or situation and breaks down......it is revealed that they have some unresolved emotional historical trauma.......said trauma is discussed to a sympathetic acoustic guitar soundtrack.....the challenge of tasks ahead help them to overcome said trauma and see life through a more positive lens / bond with son or daughter / find an inner strength they did not know they had etc. You applied to go on the show, just get on the fucking bus to your next destination you melodramatic moaning cunt.

I think you might be me in another life. I am equally sympathetic about this kind of shit.

Hasn’t everyone got an emotional backstory? There are fewer people in the world that have experienced zero adversity and we all have or will experience loss. Id find people with no life experience too basic to be interested.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 23/05/2024 20:03

Poor Betty. Even if you decide you don't want children, that's quite different from having the option to have them taken away. I did laugh a bit later though, when she said about the thing to make her more optimistic was at home all along and James just stood there looking gormless.

suburburban · 23/05/2024 22:45

martinisforeveryone · 23/05/2024 10:37

My heart really went out to Betty and to James last night.

I found it more of a hard watch, all those horrendously long bus journeys, travelling in the wrong direction and some of the overnight accommodation. It looked so tough. At this stage their energy reserves must be so depleted, let alone their emotions.

Didn't like the taxi stealing, although from the look of it, I wasn't totally sure whether it was S and V's taxi or whether Stephen was doing a good job of talking the driver into believing it was for them. The driver wouldn't have cared, he just looked like he'd been told to turn up for passengers.

I was aghast as well seeing the boys say if anyone had made up 12 hours they'd be shocked and then I and E only 12 minutes behind, was a real shocker too.

Couldn't really work out how they caught up with the boys

123ZYX · 23/05/2024 23:19

@suburburban I don't think they seemed to do as many stops as the others, although they didn't seem to be as featured this episode as others. The boys definitely did 2 jobs in return for accommodation this time, but the mum/daughter only showed one stop for work, I think - the other was a home where they could stay for the night.

scissy · 23/05/2024 23:46

The boys lost a lot of time on their buses I think. Alfie mentioned how they had a detour to the centre of the island to pick up passengers, when they had expected to go straight along the coast. Whereas Eugenie and Isabel took at least 1 taxi to travel more directly through the centre of the island.

GrandHighPoohbah · 24/05/2024 06:05

Alfie and his reasons for wanting a family was my favourite moment this week. If I had a daughter I'd have sent him her number!

Of course, most people have some kind of backstory, it does not mean that everyone has to hear it or that it has to be used as a lazy plot device though by an equally lazy producer looking for a human interest story. When a programme like RATW is filmed in some amazing places with amazing locals, history, culture, food etc with a central premise of an against the clock on a budget while up against other teams their should be enough drama without having to clumsily inject another layer of 'personal adversary'. I wonder if the application forms have a large section on trauma.

Stressybetty · 24/05/2024 09:25

Didn't understand why Stephen and Viv suddenly decided to stay a night somewhere after the homestead rather than carry on. It's like they decided they needed a break.

EverybodyLTB · 24/05/2024 11:07

^^ yes Stephen and Viv should have spent that overnight money on some speedy overnight transport, we were all shocked that they stopped - or unfortunately the only choice was probably shitty overnight transport if that’s all there was. To boost themselves get a nice meal before boarding or buy a cheap pillow or something, but powering through and then resting would have been better use of the money spent on a hotel. I haven’t ever been that exhausted or stressed on a trip though to be fair, so who knows when you are run absolutely ragged maybe you just go “I need a bed!!!!”

LaBelleSauvage123 · 24/05/2024 11:17

They both have health issues so maybe they’re just burnt out?

I thought Alfie and Owen were great with the little children.

Cattyisbatty · 24/05/2024 12:41

Poor Betty, that is really a devastating thing to hear. I suppose you would wonder why you hadn’t started your periods and then bam, the awful truth 😞 I do get what she means about shit things just happen sometimes and you have to somehow come to terms with it and not get too bitter.
I think the boys will win and it will be well deserved. I don’t mind if Betty and James win but def not E & I or S & V! The latter have really run out of energy, but kudos to them for doing it.
