Has Doctor Who always been this amateur?

I'm assuming it isn't doing very well since the BBC is plugging it massively but has it always been this poor? I haven't watched since Christopher Eccleston but thought I'd give it a go. It's like watching a bad village Am Dram performance. Am I missing something? Is this intentionally part of it now?

Susan fell in love with a human and The Doctor knew she would never leave him so he locked her out the TARDIS so she could be with her bloke.

I found re-watching the episodes with Susan really weird, as she looked like she could be my twin . Talk about doppelgängers.

Yes but it means the story has evolved .

Yeah. You're still not getting it.

It's 90% the scripts. Christopher Eccleston is an incredible actor. David Tennant really isn't, but they were both great doctors because they had great scripts.

It has been downhill all the way since.

Jodie Whittaker is at least as good an actor as DT - in fact, they have in common that they constantly twitch and fidget instead of actual acting. But DT's episodes were good and JW's were a pile of shite because of the script quality.

So very true!

Always loved Christopher Eccleston as an actor and he definitely brought the Dr back to life for me after the disaster that was Paul McGann. And although I love love David Tennants Dr so much I made my DH buy a suit just like his, David Tennant is not the best actor, but I could and have watched him over and over again. Why, because the writing was fantastic.

I tuned out during Matt Smith but had nothing to compare his acting to as I’d never seen Matt in anything before then. I fell asleep during the first Peter Capalidi and every time I’ve tried to rewatch I just can’t. I have rewatched a lot of Matt Smith though as my DDs like him.

I also love Jodi Whittikar as an Actress, but really struggled with her as the Dr, even though I was super excited when I heard she was playing the Dr. I admit I stopped watching about half way though her stint.

I can tune out some wokeness but there dose come a point where it’s like, just fucking leave it will ya!

I did enjoy the 60th anniversary and Christmas special and had/have high hopes for Ncuti, I didn’t know who he was when he was cast and only ever seen him in the Barbie movie so I don’t have anything to compare him to. But I was like WTF during the first 2 episodes as things just didn’t make sense it was extremely timywimey gobbldiegook at some points.

DH and I talked about it and thought well they are targeting younger audiences than us so they aren’t that bad and we can give it more time, we are a family of Dr Who fans, but even my Dr Who mad DDs ( 6, 10 & 12yos) were over it by the end of the 2nd episode. I quite like the goblin dance in the Christmas special and was enjoying The Devils Cord right up until the OTT La La land (which I’ve never seen) scene.

I do hope it’s not all like this going forward. I think Ncuti and Millie have good chemistry, it will be a shame if the writing ruins it.

I’ve always wanted the writers to bring back Susan, or at least have a story that explains what happened to her. I’m am really hoping with the hints of the Drs past and Susan that we do find out, is Angie Watts really Susan, or is Ruby Susan’s daughter…l do hope if they are bringing her back, it’s with decent writing.

My vote for best Dr will always be Jon Peartwee!

Hardcore Dr Who fans (eg people like RTD and Moffat) have been saying OMG what if the Doctor regenerated into a woman!? for literally decades. The final regeneration in Curse of Fatal Death 25 years ago was Joanna Lumley specifically as a nod to the fact that people had been saying "Joanna Lumley would be good as the Doctor" for years before that.

It wasn't a universally popular idea, and it does raise the statistical question of why none of the many regenerations we'd seen or heard of in the show had ever been cross-sex until The Doctor's Wife, but it's certainly not new.

Yes, fans say things like that. But that does not mean they haven't chosen to do it for reasons that are largely political. And lets be realistic, we are talking about two guys who aren't great with women's issues at the best of times.

Thank you - I don't know how I managed to forget this.

Age and alcohol, probably.
