Has Doctor Who always been this amateur?

I'm assuming it isn't doing very well since the BBC is plugging it massively but has it always been this poor? I haven't watched since Christopher Eccleston but thought I'd give it a go. It's like watching a bad village Am Dram performance. Am I missing something? Is this intentionally part of it now?

It's 90% the scripts. Christopher Eccleston is an incredible actor. David Tennant really isn't, but they were both great doctors because they had great scripts.

It has been downhill all the way since.

Jodie Whittaker is at least as good an actor as DT - in fact, they have in common that they constantly twitch and fidget instead of actual acting. But DT's episodes were good and JW's were a pile of shite because of the script quality.

So agree with this.

JodieWhittaker was let down by the writers.

IncompleteSenten · 15/05/2024 07:51

For most of its run its been delightfully naff.
It got a bit serious then a bit preachy but imo it's more dr who now that it was a few years back.
Bright colours, daft storylines, lots of running. That's how it's supposed to be.

I think the new guy makes a great doctor.

IncompleteSenten · 15/05/2024 07:53

She really was. She could have been an amazing doctor. It's a real shame they wasted the first female doctor like that. Now idiots are going to blame the fact she's a woman.

I don't think I'm the right demographic audience for this new incarnation. I'm too old and remember much better script writing. I think no-one has told Russell T that his script was rotten. He's resting on his laurels, I fear. The space babies was poor. The villain in episode two was quite scary but the ending was much too smug and lovey.

Same here.

I'm 70 and was in at the beginning and have loved most of the doctors (esp Patrick Troughton and Matt Smith* ) but Jodie was left careering out of control downhill on bad writing and the last thing with DT was so woke and preachy it lacked anything worth watching altogether -it was cringe, and I'm not going to bother with this new one.

It's served its time and the only good thing remaining it the theme tune.

*And I loved Roger Delgado as the Master - especially in the Clangers episode. 😁

Elebag · 15/05/2024 08:00

It's always been silly. Child of the 70's here.

The first episode with the babies was rather creepy: poor little souls. The second one was just plain dull. I will wait for the third episode, apparently written by Russell T Davies, to decide. But I'm not optimistic. (I've been watching it since 1963, good, bad, or indifferent...)

Third episode will be by Steven Moffat, @bellocchild.

The former showrunner has written his first episode for seven years, and he’s served up a classic with Boom, the third instalment of Ncuti Gatwa’s inaugural series

The Devil's Chord was full-on panto.

I like panto. It was well done panto. But panto is not what I expect from Doctor Who.

I like Ncuti Gatwa. I'm really hoping they give him something good to work with.

Mrsjayy · 15/05/2024 09:18

Doctor is essentially a kids show or suitable for children I don't know what people expect from a programme about an alien flying about time. I get that the new era made it more angsty but it Is still a being flying about in time and space chasing or being chased by " the baddies. I started watching with Tom Baker and that was absolutely ridiculous. I love the New Doctor and I hope his series goes well as I felt Jodie Whitaker was let down.

This is apropos of nothing but no Doctor has ever worn glasses, is that right? Did Hartnell wear specs? I imagine as he's an alien they might not be necessary or they might humanise him/her too much.

I suppose I sympathise about the 'woke-ness' - I'm not anti woke exactly but we had something similar in the last Bond movie, it's like it's meant to suck the joy out of everything.

Peter Davison wore half moon reading glasses.

I honestly had to force myself through episode 1 with the promise of Steven Moffat to come. Very much the chocolate fudge cake as a reward for finishing my broccoli.

Also looking forward to Kate "Loki" Herron's episode.

Apropos of nothing but I saw your post and could have sworn Sylvester McCoy's Doctor wore glasses. I just Goggled Googled and apparently he didn't.

As you were.

sobeyondthehills · 15/05/2024 10:52

I loved the second episode, could not get on board with the first one, but I felt, they were just setting up the characters.

Also agree Jodie got fucked over by bad writing. I have a feeling why that happened.

Also have assumed this series is going to be filled with pronouns, various genders, etc etc but I am fine with all of this if my theory about the companion turns out to be true.

KomproMatilda · 15/05/2024 11:01

if my theory about the companion turns out to be true.

Which is …?

HaveABlastOfThisMatrix · 15/05/2024 12:03

Yes do tell @sobeyondthehills ... I tried watching Space Babies last night and lasted all of 10 minutes... and I watched that far in two 5-min stretches as I just couldn't take it! lol

I've been a fan since the 70s - Tom Baker was my first although I did see repeats with Jon Pertwee as well. I just about made it through the Xmas special but I couldn't get through Space Babies. Sad if it has come to this.

I do wonder whether the overacting and 4th wall breaking is there for a reason - I think they are in a TV show, hence the appearance of Strictly alumni in the 60s as themselves... they shouldn't have been there should they? However, even if there is a reason for all this, everyone will have stopped watching by the time everything is revealed. Or it could just be RTD at his most self indulgent. I don't know 😬

Yes she was her stories were awful although I did like her "time lord story but even the revelation was a bit flat.

I hated that.

Yes the storylines are silly but for me the problem with this new series was as much the overacting and the ridiculous over exaggeration of everything as the poor storylines. It was like a low grade GCSE performance in places.

Mrsjayy · 15/05/2024 12:14

I think you need to give it a chance really it's only 2 episodes in .

IncompleteSenten · 15/05/2024 12:17

Is ruby River song or her daughter? Or is that way too obvious to be possible? Or one of the doctor's actual species maybe?

I wondered if Mrs flood was going to turn out to be river song but that would be insultingly lazy of them re the obvious name, plus how would they unkill her for her to regenerate?

I think I think too much about what is just supposed to be a fun and silly little TV show 🤣

KomproMatilda · 15/05/2024 12:21

There is almost no limit to how much one can cogitate over Dr Who. That’s what makes it valuable - not cardboard monsters, or running and shouting, or Disney money - it’s the boundless imaginary possibilities it opens up.

beguilingeyes · 15/05/2024 12:27

I've been watching since the late 60s. Tom Baker was my Doctor. I've mostly loved the re-boot. I'd long been an Eccleston fan (DCI Bilborough in Cracker...sob) so I loved him and thought Billie was a revelation .
I'm the only person I know who hated Tennant...too hyper and 'look at me'. Matt Smith is probably my favourite Doctor now...he was amazing. Capaldi was ok (although agree about awful Clara) and also about Jodie's writing. Chibnal...say no more.
I was thrilled about RTDs return, although bloody Tennant again and I like Ncuti but so far I'm not feeling it. I really want it to work though so I'm sticking with it.
Not sure about her though.

Tennant's Doctor wore glasses a few times but it wasn't a part of the costume that stayed on all the time

It's awful now.

We have a family of Who fans here. I sat with my father watching, and my dc sat with us rewatching new Who.

They loved Eccleston, Tennant,Smith and Capaldi (though they found some of the latter's more boring that the others). They completely lost interest during Jody's era.

I was hoping we could get together and watch again for this new season...it was turned off within 15 minutes. Dull. Boring.

Yep
This is us too.
I like the new doctor but I just thought the stories were 'silly'.
