Did the trophy break into 2 pieces there at the end when he slapped it back down?

Yes. I said 'don't break the trophy' the same time as Graham.

Why are people saying there are bot votes?

Because in a competition of 15 countries (the semi final) it is very unlikely for any country to receive 40pc of the vote.

Lonelycrab · 11/05/2024 23:58

It's turned into a load of camp utter baloney- I work in the music business- the songs are in my opinion all shit

This is unfortunately correct. There’s a whole planets worth of good music to be had, but it’s not to be found in this competition. Sure, it’s spectacle, but this really isn’t good music.

So the entire public vote in the uk went to Israel? That tallies with public opinion of course Hmm

SabreIsMyFave · 11/05/2024 23:52

To be fair, Sam's song was far superior to Olly's. And he has a really good voice. Olly's song is OK and his voice is OK, but Sam is the better (and more natural - and talented) singer. Sam can write songs too.

Olly is fine, but it's like comparing apples and pears. Sam is way more talented (musically) than Olly.

I agree, and I also think Sam is a really top guy. Olly is a bit much. But I don’t think the comments saying Olly isn’t as talented isn’t fair. He’s very very talented!

LordPercyPercy · 11/05/2024 23:58

There's a thread in CitME for those who want to have a rammy, btw.

Deathraystare · 11/05/2024 23:58

I hoped Croatia would win. Surprised at all the voting for Portugal. A lot of the songs and singers were very samey . Did not like Israel for that reason, nothing to do with politics

Choux · 11/05/2024 23:59

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 11/05/2024 23:57

Oh lads. What an end to it all. Smashed the trophy.

I saw it was broken but didn't see how it happened. An accident?

JaneJeffer · 11/05/2024 23:59

I had to rewind

Kendodd · 11/05/2024 23:59

YaMuvva · 11/05/2024 23:50

What would be wrong with Israel winning? The act and song were amazing and she’s overcome a lot already being censored

I'm very glad Israel didn't win as well. Nothing against that young women and the bullying she got was horrible. But can you imagine if Israel had won? And they were hosting in Tel Aviv next year? I think it's highly likely the war in Gaza will still be ongoing or it will be under brutal Israeli occupation. Can you not see how problematic that would be?

SinisterBumFacedCat · 11/05/2024 23:59

Israel’s song was just a bit boring, not deserving of over 300 points.

YaMuvva · 11/05/2024 23:59

Coshei · 11/05/2024 23:52

This is the most insane reaction I could have imagined, and I have reported your post.

Because they rightly point out anti-semitism in a music competition?

Raahh · 12/05/2024 00:00

RedToothBrush · 11/05/2024 23:54

In the end a good song won the song contest.

I agree. It was one of the favourites for ages before the show, and he performed it well on the night.

Thank you for the threads, Red as always- it's been a bit of a strange one this year- but thank you for the company (and I stayed awake Grin).

SocksAndTheCity · 12/05/2024 00:00

Did Croatia get the most public votes? I can't remember the numbers but I hope they were happier knowing that a huge number of actual people liked their song 😊

SwedishEdith · 12/05/2024 00:00

Happy with result. Either Switzerland or Croatia winning felt right to me. But France had a good singer and I hoped Spain would have done better. Glad Israel didn't win because the politics around that would have been a nightmare. Neutral Switzerland feels good atm for Eurovision. Olly Alexander - I mean, embarrassing on a personal level to be the only one who got 0 but don't make a Eurovision performance all about your own agenda.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 12/05/2024 00:00

Yes @Choux he just put it down too hard.

Kianai · 12/05/2024 00:00

purpleme12 · 11/05/2024 23:56

Why are people saying there are bot votes?

Remember that time when everyone was shocked that Labour didn't win the election, because EVERYONE was voting for them and they'd seen young people outside the polling booths and everything.

It's like that. People don't realise they are in an echo chamber. Or how their behaviour is being perceived by those outside of it.

JaneJeffer · 12/05/2024 00:00

Well done Raahh did you smother your DH yet? Grin

MushMonster · 12/05/2024 00:01

Did anyone else love Norway's song and performance?
I am still baffled why they did not get much votes.
Also, UK no public vote? Olly did well.

I am disappointed anout these two.
But I love the winner! He was great on stage. Broke the code!

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 00:01

mactire · 11/05/2024 23:52

Because they are currently engaged in genocide of the Palestinians and if I had my way, they’d have been entirely barred from the competition.

Maybe you should look at the terrorists who run Gaza, who as soon as there was a ceasefire, raped and murdered hundreds of Israelis, and still have many held hostage.

Did you forget about Hamas?

suicune · 12/05/2024 00:01

All the folk confused about Israel getting so many votes do seem to be quite naive. Social media tends to represent minority opinions rather than majorities. I wasn’t shocked at all, nor was I shocked by the UK giving 12 points.

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2024 00:01

I liked the winning song better when he was balancing on the wok thing. Grin

I feel sorry for Ollie, he deserved a bit better. I kept reading on here and elsewhere his staging was amazing (don’t watch the semi finals as it spoils it for me) but I don’t think that came across very well on telly. Just close ups of him and the sweaty men upside down. I couldn’t work out how the audience would be viewing that, was it better at the arena? Found it a bit underwhelming.

Appalonia · 12/05/2024 00:01

So much for unity through music, this competition seems to have achieved just the opposite.

And the winning entrant was shit.

OublietteBravo · 12/05/2024 00:01

France having a poorer than expected jury performance probably swung the result Switzerlands way as much as anything

SheldonsOneWordEurovisionesque · 12/05/2024 00:01

Breaking the trophy was the most exciting bit for me.
😁

IwantToRetire · 12/05/2024 00:01

I dont like that it is political in a national sense.

But as some have raised this, you could well argue that the members of the public who have boycotted the event (ie wont have voted) would have swung the popular vote in the UK in a different direction.

So I wouldn't draw any national statement from the UK about Israel.

But to be really boring, does show that if outcomes are decided on votes, abstaining as a form of protest can achieve exactly the opposite of the aim of the boycott.

Missed most of this, and so started watching towards the end. Maybe not being caught up in it, but the songs I heard seemed unremarkable.

And having just heard the winner am left scatching my head.
