Just read that this is a new series!

The Talented Mr Ripley is one of my favourite films.

Where can I watch it?
Is it any good?
Who plays Ripley?
Is Jude Law in it? 😂

I hate the black and white. I am old enough to remember when this was the only option so deliberately choosing it is the height of pretension for me so turned this off almost as soon as I turned it on.

I just watched the Matt Damon/Jude Law film, really liked it. Thanks!

can’t quite get into the b/w of the series, I like seeing Italy in colour!

Spirallingdownwards · 15/04/2024 16:42

Having gotten past the actors being too old, Dicky not being handsome enough, Tom not being likeable and obviously a sleazy conman, and no warmth or colour of Italy I too agree it picks up from episode 3 onwards and I enjoyed it. That said after I rewatched the Law/Damon/Paltrow film and enjoyed that again too.

But I do have to add that I do think Paltrow is a bit of a wooden actress. Jude Law, Matt Damon and P Seymour Hoffmann were brilliant though.

Just finished watching. Andrew Scott was good as Ripley but he's way too old - 47! And was baffled by a woman playing the role of Freddie Miles (nepo-baby casting), a pale shadow of Philip Seymour Hoffman in the 1999 movie. Fanning better than Paltrow as dim Marge. Liked the overall production and the cat observing lift shots, but it was would-be-great-film-director sort of stuff, like an attempt at being The Third Man etc. Most irritating were the endless Italians-looking-thoughtfully-suspicious shots.

Eliot sumner has the most amazing face and cheekbones. I think the wig made them look fake?

also the fact that Freddie had a man staying in his room - why was he allowed to leave Italy? Why wasn’t he a suspect?

I think the incredible buildings did a lot of the acting in that. I really liked the supporting cast too - the police were all great. Overall really enjoyed it.

it is good but i am finding it hard going.

It gets pacier after ep3

thank you

I really enjoyed Eliot Sumners version of Freddie. I agree the pace is a bit slow to pick up but I did enjoy it. The cinematography is beautiful and I like that the storyline is darker than the original movie. I agree with pp the Andrew Scott was too old and not handsome enough for the role though. Also felt exactly the same way about Barry Keough in Saltburn

Did not like Italy in Black and white, but enjoyed seeing John Malkovitch as he also starred as the older Ripley in Ripleys game.

Willmafrockfit · 07/05/2024 06:09

i finished it
excellent ending.
the black and white was beautiful

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 16/05/2024 20:46

I rather enjoyed it! Did roll my eyes somewhat at Freddie though.

Battytwatty · 07/06/2024 16:49

Really enjoying this. I haven’t seen the film so no point of reference which could be why I’m enjoying it more than others. However the Freddie actor…. It’s obvious the actor is female. Why or why have they cast her, she absolutely doesn’t pass. Do directors think the general public are idiots.

thankyouforthedayz · 08/06/2024 11:56

Loved the black and white.
Andrew Scott is perfect.
Marge - fantastic
Freddie - disastrous jarring casting and spoilt the series. I could accept Freddie character portrayed as a trans man. But the actor mangled it - so wooden.
