Based upon the book ‘The talented mr ripley’ by Patricia Highsmith Andrew Scott stars in this adaptation. It is filmed in B&W so interested to see how this differs from the glorious film starring Gwyneth, Jude and Matt Damon.

Going to start episode 1 later this morning.

I'm looking forward to it! It gets a great review in the Guardian;

I was hoping this would be a series about Ellen Ripley from Alien! :)

UneTasse · 04/04/2024 09:15

Oh gosh - we get a whole new SERIES of Andrew Scott? YES. Somehow this had passed me by, but as soon as we're up to date/finished Shogun, this is next, 100%.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 04/04/2024 09:24

oh today, i have a reminder set on Netflix for this.
fantastic

tattychicken · 04/04/2024 09:50

Frankly anything with Andrew Scott in it is on my watch list. Smile

ParkerPyne · 04/04/2024 09:58

Really looking forward to this, love the book and Andrew Scott! If anyone who’s watched any of it yet could tell me if it’s suitable for watching with a slightly strait laced mother in law that would be great.

Interesting piece in the times about this yesterday also. Music organised by Matt Bellamy and the cast looks fab!

I'm concerned that Lucy Mangan has given it such a great review. That's usually the kiss of death for me! However I can't imagine Andrew Scott doing anything that isn't brilliant so am looking forward to watching this.

BarrelOfOtters · 04/04/2024 10:11

The Telegraph hated everything about it apart from Andrew Scott. Dull, lifeless, poor acting.

Lucy Mangan though...is usually reliable for me.

I loved the colours of the film so I did think black and white was an odd choice.

Looking forward to giving it a go.

Just wondering if AS is going to be a bit old to play Ripley. matt Damon worked brilliantly because he was still young enough to mould himself into a completely new person. I have been rereading the later Ripley novels when he is married and living a nice cosy bourgeois life in France, with a bit of murder and art forgery thrown in every so often. I would like to see AS play him in that stage of his life.

Citrusandginger · 04/04/2024 10:58

Thank you for highlighting this - I hope it's good. AS is a good omen.

EachandEveryone · 04/04/2024 15:22

They all seem much older don’t they?

Crinkle77 · 04/04/2024 15:53

Aarrgghh gonna be honest and I'll probably get flamed for this but I struggled to get through the first episode. It was slow, I was clock watching and didn't like the black and white cinematography. Love Andrew Scott so might give it another episode and see if it picks up.

I’ve just started this, looks interesting.

Pixiesgirl · 04/04/2024 18:26

I thought it was an alien thing too. For some bizarre reason I can't stand Andrew Scott and his prissy little "I am acting don'tcha know face". He was a dark spot on fleabag series 2, hot my arse.

doubleshotcappuccino · 04/04/2024 18:31

I'm two episodes in and a love it. It's a slow, observed, beautifully put together pace and Scott it mesmerising as always . Suspense building nicely .. I'm so so delighted when Netflix invests in decent productions...

Love it

interviewed on radio 4 last week as well, or was it this week?

gentlesea · 04/04/2024 19:05

I'm a huge fan of Andrew Scott but I'm not sure if he's right for this role. He's so overtly menacing that it doesn't make sense why these nice rich people keep him around.

Also odd to hear him speaking with an American accent!

EachandEveryone · 04/04/2024 19:23

I’m on episode 2. I saw Johnny Flyn playing Richard Burton and now I can’t unsee Richard Burton!!! They just seem too old and not good looking enough compared to Jude Law in his prime and Gwyn they look quite plain. Maybe it’s the black and white? I was expecting it to turn into colour when he got to Italy!

gentlesea · 04/04/2024 20:13

It is a shame it's in black and white when they're shooting in such a beautiful location, I guess to highlight the depravity inside him?

underscorer · 04/04/2024 20:15

It's beautifully shot, every frame is a work of art.
