Out of the house , that's a great story!! Its just like something out of Race across the world!
Couldnt stand moaning Jen We were rooting for her NOT to win!

First time I had travelled on my own I went to Australia as solo backpacking is pretty easy. But I had to change planes at Toyko and it was the most confusing experience, to 21 year old me anyway. You had to somehow buy (?) a ticket for the transfer bus to the other terminal but it wasn't clear, at least to me, and several signs were only in Japanese, and there was no-one to ask. I ended up barging my way onto the bus or I'd have missed my plane. I'd never done anything like that in my life before but was so worried about missing the connection. Anyway, I made it but seeing those lads tearing about on screen reminded me of what it was like being 20/21 and in a totally strange place, not speaking the language.

Finally managed to catch up the thread agree with the majority that the all female teams are the ones to support and that all male contestants seem a bit annoying Grin

Oh god, hope it's better than the celeb one with the tedious z listers.

I'm glad I saw this MN thread as I was totally unaware. I've watched episode.1 on iPlayer and it's pretty good and I'm already learning the names/personalities of the contestants. A plucky lot I think. 🌹

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/04/2024 18:18

but they must sell takeaway food?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/04/2024 18:21

the youngsters will struggle without internet, the older generation, less so

FeltCarrot · 11/04/2024 18:46

@MrsLargeEmbodied They do, but people stand near the food stall to eat or will find somewhere they can sit down. There are very few litter bins so people need to dispose of their rubbish where they bought it if that makes sense.

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/04/2024 18:56

I wonder if Steven is ND. I recognise traits in him that my DS exhibits (DS is ND ...and sometimes a knob).

I think by the time you're 61 you can manage those traits and learn what is and isn't acceptable, socially.

Rosienose · 11/04/2024 19:16

Is there much swearing in it? My 9 and 7 year old really want to watch it but 9pm seems like it might be a bit sweary

Don't think so didn't notice swearing. Might be the odd tense moment racing for a train but nothing major

I noticed they bleeped a swear word that I think was fuck, from the context.

I don't think it had any other, milder, swear words.

Wonkypictureframe · 11/04/2024 20:19

It did, only because I was listening out for similar reasons. But really nothing that bad. I’m going to let my child watch after viewing.

Lovemycat2023 · 11/04/2024 21:43

I think it’s after 9pm mainly because of the target audience rather than any content which isn’t suitable.

scissy · 11/04/2024 23:12

There might also be scenes yonder viewers find distressing I guess. They had clips of civil unrest and one of the competitors being taken to hospital in an ambulance in the South America series.

Anyway, I'm enjoying this series so far, DD and I are debating who we think are going to be knocked out first (every other series has got rid of a pair after stage 2?). We reckon unless they can start making back money, it'll be the mother and daughter who have blown a load of their budget already.

Conniethecatapillar · 11/04/2024 23:25

The boys look so young! Making me feel old! Really enjoyed that first episode and it's nice to have to wait a week and not watch the whole lot in one go, like the old days haha

highlandcoo · 12/04/2024 00:56

I love RATW; so pleased it's back.

I first watched series 2 in lockdown, as my son recommended it because he knew a couple of the contestants, and while we were feeling so confined it was amazing to be reminded that there was a fantastic varied world out there. I recall that feeling extremely clearly.

I agree that the Canada series was less interesting travel-wise as they seemed to spend a lot of time all hitch-hiking along the same stretch of road, however as a travelogue of the country it was beyond spectacular ... and it was worth watching for Zainib and Mobeen alone. They were so genuine and she was especially dry and funny. Still a good watch imo.

I'm not sure who I'm supporting in series 4 yet although like others I'm really impressed by Isabel picking up Japanese and I like Brydie too.

As for Steven, his bare backside was unnecessary and that shy comment was aggravating. I've noticed men - and invariably older men - doing that before as a subtle way to wrong-foot women as it's quite a tricky comment to challenge without looking defensive. And Isabel couldn't be less shy in fact so also completely wrong. Wondering if he'll become more or less annoying as the series progresses.

I've been to Japan and it's great. I did spend six weeks trying to learn Japanese before the trip and confirm it's not easy! But people were lovely and very gracious about my attempts to speak the language. Anyone who feels intrigued - do go if you have the opportunity.

ellebelli · 12/04/2024 09:57

Well I like the two young lads.
Alfie I find funny, though I can also see how annoying he can be.
My teenage son as ADHD and he does remind me of how he can be,losing things, and he would most definitely have laughed at the babies crying.🫣
Enjoyed the first episode
Trying to think who the sister reminds me of?

I don't like the early elimination bit. It seems mean to eliminate one couple like that so early on. I'm not sure what it adds to the competition either.

I reckon Viv and Steve would be prime candidates though. I also think they'd stay there afterwards and travel on their own.

She reminds me of Lea Michele, could it be her you’re thinking of?

Loved the first episode, will watch it again later with my 10 year old who absolutely loves RATW (we just tell her to ignore the occasional swear 😃)

Corinthiana · 12/04/2024 14:58

Yes! Thank you. That's who she reminds me of.
Betty is an unusual name for a young woman. It's nice, though.

I agree with Alfie might have adhd, the way he explained about ‘keeping things in his head not in his hands’, his single focus alongside forgetting and losing things signposted adhd traits to me. I just hope his friend can cope with him.
Loving this series, my son is super dyslexic too much like Byrdie so it’s interesting to watch how she copes so well.
Isabel is so impressive with the language.
Will they drop one pair early on like the other series, does anyone know? I’ll be sad to see anyone go.

Longma · 12/04/2024 20:36

I find it so rude that so many of them make absolutely no effort to learn language basics.

The interview with the last contestant said they didn't find out their initial destination until they got the airport and had already had phones removed. And they didn't know there final destination until, they are there starting.

Other than, as Isabel did in the train, there is no prior time to learn the language.

Longma · 12/04/2024 20:39

We are on a train in Tokyo before we knew how rude it was.

Whilst you shouldn't eat (or,drink) on the streets, eating on the Shinkansen is perfectly acceptable even amongst Japanese people. They were selling food before we got on and whilst we were in - fancy bento mix type meals. Remembering to not walk away when buying food and water from a market or food stall and to stand and eat.drink there took some getting used to.

CrushingOnRubies · 12/04/2024 21:26

Did anyone else see the googlebox bit about RATW? I always find it interesting what the cast think about shows like that
