I'm really enjoying this offering from Disney+!

What an episode that was last night! DH and I sat watching, not moving a muscle, then in stunned silence afterwards. Absolutely brilliant TV.

TellyUsername · 17/04/2024 15:04

I had to have a look at who made this so I can see what else they've made. A Van Tulleken sibling (not one of the twins) is part of the production. That's a very talented family!

It was a totally gripping episode!
I am going to re-watch it again tonight.

therealcookiemonster · 17/04/2024 15:33

In Edo with Toranaga I imagine!

hmm. I swear I saw him get on the boat with mariko at the end of the previous episode?

maybe he disembarked before they set off

MagAmberson · 17/04/2024 22:28

Just finished the episode. Wow. Absolutely gripping, I'm emotionally drained!

Only one episode left :(

Ponderingwindow · 17/04/2024 23:12

The amount of respect blackthorne has for her just slayed me. It’s not his culture, he doesn’t fully appreciate why she is taking this stand, but he doesn’t intervene, then he agrees to be her second. It’s so refreshing.

VestPantsandSocks · 18/04/2024 19:04

I re-watched Episode 9. I think its possibly the most exquisite tv I have ever seen.

I'm going to try and rewatch them all ahead of Tuesday. This has to be the best thing I've ever watched on TV, bar none. Well worth the Disney+ subscription on its own.

@BlueRidgeMountain great to find a fellow fan!

Did you all see there are loads of extras on the Disney plus? Podcasts, behind the scenes etc. I’d highly recommend the one called “A Day with Hiroyuki Sanada “🥰 I wish I knew how to link on the phone!

That’s tonight’s TV sorted now!

AIBUToLikeYabu · 20/04/2024 17:45

Unless I've missed it, I cannot believe we have not had a post here smirking at Yabu's name! Grin

For me it's nowhere near as good as the Richard Chamberlain one but that's mainly because, as other people say, Blackthorne actor is no Richard Chamberlain!

For anyone who is interested in the book but hasn't read it it's part of a series of four by James Clavell (although this one is slightly tenuously linked due to time frame!) My favourite book from them is Noble House.

AIBUToLikeYabu · 20/04/2024 17:47

I also didn't realise until recently he wrote To Sir, with Love!

Good thread TellyUsername San.

I watched the original again last year. Still holds up well. Apparently it was the first time a womans nipple had been shown on network TV.

Am enjoying the remake, only three episodes in.

Where can I watch the original?

AIBUToLikeYabu · 21/04/2024 11:32

@Theraininspainfalls sadly it isn't streamed online anywhere but there are usually DVD box sets available on eBay/amazon.

I know it feels quite old fashioned now to have a DVD player!

just watched the finale. soooo good. the dialogue, the moments of stillness.

I think I am going to watch from the beginning again to really relish it.

for everyone who enjoyed this, I really reccommend the blue eyed samurai on netflix

Lovewine1975 · 23/04/2024 15:59

Can't wait to finish work and get home and watch it!

MothralovesGojira · 23/04/2024 20:03

I watched the final episode this afternoon.
Spectacular. Beautiful. Stunning.
This is likely to be the best thing on tv this year and if it doesn't win Hiroyuki Sanada a Golden Globe then I will be amazed.
I'm going to leave it a bit and then rewatch it all over again. Blackthorn's journey and transformation is touching to watch. I really disliked him at the beginning but he finally comes into his own at the end which is heart breaking as we know that he will never go home.

TellyUsername · 23/04/2024 20:09

I need more of it! I enjoyed Blackthorne and hated Toranaga by the end of this one. Yabu was just Yabu wasn't he!

OP posts:
LenaLamont · 23/04/2024 21:14

I've had to have a quiet hour after finishing watching while I mulled it all over.

Bloody Yabu being so very Yabu - I was worried the slimy duplicitous fecker would get away with it once again. He was entertaining, I'll give him that (proper snorting laugh at the death poem). But I'm glad he met his end.

Toranga and his 6D chess match against the world was fascinating and very in keeping with who he was all along. Once we accept he was prepared to ask his very best friend to commit seppuku in public to convince Osaka he was honestly surrendering, we should have known all bets were off in ruthlessness.

Like Blackthorne, I was so hollowed out by the loss of Mariko that everything felt a little pointless without her.

I need another cuppa and a little more time to think about it all.

evtheria · 23/04/2024 21:23

It was entrancing - such a dramatic finale without being loud or full of explosions etc.

Did anyone notice how Toranaga says to Yabu "Why tell a dead man the future?" - which is what Yabu quipped to his nephew (about Toranaga!) in E01? So many circles!

this is why I need to watch it again. I'm pretty sure I will discover so many more subtle details

"Unless I win" - masterful.
