I watched the original again last year. Still holds up well. Apparently it was the first time a womans nipple had been shown on network TV.

Am enjoying the remake, only three episodes in.

He smacks around his wife so I'm afraid it's straight in the bastard basket for me - but I must admit my lip wobbled when his did!

The latest episode was really good, one scene in particular I could hardly watch with the tension, such a good series

Father, son, and Toranaga scene? If TV shows could get Oscar's that scene would have got one for Toranaga!

I’m just sad there is so little of this series left. The pacing is good and they made good choices not to drag out the story, but part of me wishes we could have just spent more time with them. I think I would have been happy just hanging out in the Anjin’s household and watching everyone try to understand one another for a few episodes alone.

Oh the tea room scene was brilliant, all the characters are so well drawn and the production design is exquisite. I don't know the original series or book so can someone tell me are these 10 episodes all we get? Have they covered most of the story? I don't want it to end 😟

It seems there will be a full stop at the end of this series. I want more.

I guess it's good it won't get spun out for more seasons with the potential dip in quality. We'll just have to enjoy the last two episodes.

Am I the only one really struggling to understand what’s going on? I find it mostly baffling.

Mariko is an absolute icon!

Couldn't believe how it ended. I'm very confused though. I mean assuming Ishido sent the shinobi to kill her, why - surely that will have just the same effect as if Mariko had killed herself? And what the hell is going on with Yabushige?

Could have cried when Blackthorne stood for Mariko though. After everything he said - "If not for good sense, if not for God, would you consider living, for me?" - he still 100% respected her and her right to make her own decision, no matter how much he hated that decision.

Because Ishido saves face if it looks like an invasion. Mariko seriously damaged his pride with that plan, he had no way to save face whichever way he played it.

Yabushige is self serving but errs on the side of Toranaga. Ishido gave him the choice of betray Mariko or death, something Mariko and Toranaga probably predicted would happen. She didn't fear death, she welcomed it, which made her even more dangerous.

@Lovewine1975 We were sitting there gawping. DS was queuing up Fallout for us all but we needed a break before watching that as we were too gobsmacked.

The scene when Blackthorn stood to be her second absolutely killed me. What an act of love and respect.

Last week Mariko also had us staring stunned at the screen. The tea ceremony, and what she said… if she’d stood up and chopped his head off it would have been less brutal. My god, what a wonderful character she is.

I could barely watch the scene at sunset, when John realizes he must be her second, absolutely soul wrenching.
Then the end!!! What?!!! Yabushige you are breaking my heart! I wonder if there will be a full circle back to how he was drowning, Blackthorn watching, and accepting death... except this time no 'rope'.

other notes:

• I hope Buntaro, as much as I dislike him, goes full samurai on everyone when he finds out his wife's been blown up
• How will Lady Ochiba react? Please be the one to very slowly kill Ishido 🙏 with a terrible, beautiful smile on her face

What a brilliant breath holding, heart racing episode, it was amazing and took some recovery time !!!
