MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

The absence of Kim Kyung-Na aka Boo Bae (Love ft Marriage and Divorce ) has been rectified in The Player 2: Master of swindlers. Viki. Watching in anticipation of another 🔥Speedo scene. Added to Advent calendar list. #FN

AmVa · 18/06/2024 12:35

I am up to episode 9 of My Mister and seriously addicted. It is so tense and interesting and beautifully, beautifully shot.

Dragonrock · 18/06/2024 13:07

For some unknown reason I started on Lovestruck in the City, I think because it is on Netflix which is easier than watching my ipad with LR. Big question - is it worth the time investment? Also, ALERT for those who might not have spotted it Sh**ting Stars is now on Netflix in the UK. I enjoyed that one immensely as it was funny and quirky and Kim Young-dae is sure easy on the eye and I like Lee Sung-kyung.

Cobol · 18/06/2024 13:59

Lovestruck in the City is pretty watchable Dragonrock and JCW has some good chemistry with Kim Ji-won in it but it's not my favourite JCW drama. I'd say it's worth watching only if you're enjoying all the different couples and stories rather than for the main romance.

I've finally finished Missing Crown Prince, which ran for an unexpected 20 episodes. It wasn't at all what I was expecting, with a different take on the usual sageuk struggles for the throne and Suho was really rather good in it. He never did get his sword out, which was a slight disappointment, but otherwise it was a very enjoyable roller-coaster of wispy beard plotting and gentle flirting. A good watch for any fans of sageuk and Suho - but that possibly might just be me 😂

Dragonrock · 18/06/2024 14:48

Now Cobol you got me as I do like a funny sageuk, don't know much about Suho really, as not really got into EXO. But I did spot that Kim Min-kyu is in it and I've liked him in Business Proposal, but Heavenly Idol looked weak. Have just spotted he was in Queen : Love and War, anyone seen that? OK, I need to now stop going down rabbit holes!

Cobol · 18/06/2024 16:06

It's not actually that Kim Min-kyu, Dragonrock, it's a different one. It's not really a comedy sageuk either, though it seems like it is from the premise, which is why it wasn't entirely what I was expecting. I only stuck with it because of Suho and although I'm glad I did as there was lots to like in it I'm not entirely sure what others will make of it. I found out after I finished it that it was by the same writer as Kill Me, Heal Me and there are definitely some similarities as both are quite over the top and melodramatic but also surprisingly warm-hearted with a cast of memorable characters.

mrsfeatherbottom · 18/06/2024 16:39

@Dragonrock I didn't like Lovestruck in the City. I gave it the lowest score of all the (35) kdramas I've watched. I still watched it all, mind you. At least the episodes were short.

Cobol · 18/06/2024 17:39
  • that should be same director above, not writer.
MigsandTiggs · 18/06/2024 18:11

I dropped LITC. I like JCW but he's been in lots of mediocre shows lately.

boatyardblues · 18/06/2024 19:04

Arf.

I’m glad you are enjoying My Mister now AmVa. It’s an understated masterpiece.

If I can stay awake long enough I plan to finish Dr Brain (Apple+) tonight. I started it for entirely shallow reasons (Um Tae-goo in supporting role) but find myself gripped by the thriller threaded through the cray-cray. Unless a frizzy-permed goon in a shell suit floats your boat, this show will not itch your Um Tae-goo scratch.

I'd watch something with that review on the poster! 😆

All the talk of FFMW reminded me that I'd had She Was Pretty on my list for some time, so I've been romping through that recently, in between watching Military Prosecutor Doberman and Tail of the Nine Tailed 1938 with DH.

LiTC was OK but not Wookie's best imo.

mrsfeatherbottom · 18/06/2024 20:46

@PunksVersusBrats I enjoyed She Was Pretty!

AmVa · 18/06/2024 21:56

I mostly enjoyed LITC - mainly because of the A+++ kissing. Rest of the plot?? 🤷

Cobol · 19/06/2024 10:41

I've added Missing Crown Prince and also Parasyte the Grey to the spreadsheet.

I've no idea what to watch next. I've got quite a large gap to fill until Sweet Home 3 comes out in July.

The Korean Roy Kent.

polkettle · 19/06/2024 15:52

Obviously in the minority but I liked LiTC a lot. Hot snogging but also quite a lot of dry humour and unexpected quirk to the script. Some things in it work better than others (the fake band songs are just baffling) but it steers its own course.
Finished Crash this week and recommend to those who like a bit of low tension crime nonsense. It was a fun ride down the apparently empty 6 lane highways of Korea.
