This will be a real tear jerker

i watched the two previous programmes she and Derek did

this is the final year of Derek life and told in his words

Kate Garraway (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/kate-garraway/) will front a new ITV programme documenting the last year of her late husband Derek Draper’s (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/derek%20draper/) life: Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.
The Good Morning Britain (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/good-morning-britain/) star’s husband died in January (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/derek-draper-tributes-kate-garraway-husband-covid-123921217.html)
after his battle with COVID.

She previously made two programmes about his health struggles — Finding Derek and Caring For Derek — and will now share his final chapter which will air on ITV on 26 March.

The film starts in May 2023 and looks at the final year of Draper’s life, including both sweet family moments and an insight into his health battle.

But it also looks back and reflects on his life before he contracted COVID in 2020, including his career as a political adviser, his romance with TV star Garraway — who he has two children with — and how Draper’s illness changed their relationship while they maintained their close bond.

The film also highlights the challenges faced by those living with serious illness and disability and those who care for them and will feature contributions from Draper’s carer Jake.

The programme is set to air in just a few days, close to three months after Draper died at the age of 56.

It will be on ITV at 9pm on Tuesday 26 March.
Documentary was Derek Draper’s idea
Garraway has said that she hadn’t planned to make a third documentary but that the idea came from her husband.

Obviously when we started making this documentary early last year, we had no idea the events that would unfold that ultimately took Derek from us,” she said. “And in January 2024, after he had passed, I wondered if it was right that it should ever come to air.

"But I didn’t want to let those who have given us so much support over the last four years down, and the carers paid and unpaid who in their thousands of letters to me, feel Derek’s story has given them a voice. Also, I remember so vividly that the idea of making this third documentary at all came from Derek himself.”

She went on: “At the beginning of January 2023, he’d been released from a four month spell in hospital for sepsis and we were very positive about his recovery. Derek was determined to keep on getting better and improving.

One day, we were sitting together while I was caring for him and he suddenly, from nowhere, asked, ‘Are we making another documentary?’ I said, ‘Well I hadn’t really planned to. Were you thinking that you would like to?’ And he said firmly, 'Yes'."

The presenter said she told Draper it should be his story, in his voice, explaining: "Derek got very emotional at the idea, because his words and speech were so limited and there were so many things he wanted to say about the struggle we were all having as a family and he wanted to speak up about it."

When she asked Draper what his main message was, he replied: "Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love."
“We had to find a way of allowing Derek’s voice to be heard and while having to finish it without him has been so hard, I am delighted that the film is a tribute to Derek and his incredible spirit,” she added.

Derek Draper's friends share emotional tributes as Kate Garraway announces husband's death at 56

There has been an outpouring from love for Kate Garraway after she announced her late husband Derek Draper had died aged 56 following Covid.

Re the tax bill, I assume she’s doing everything possible to stay in her home for her dc. They will know their neighbours, probably go to local schools etc. you can’t blame her for wanting that stability for them.

Sure, but the bills still need to be paid.

So if you were faced with care and tax bills totalling a seven figure sum what would you do?

His tax bill? People should pay for his tax bill? She earns half a million a year, she lives in a 4 million pound house. Think about how much she has earned from 2 books and 3 documentaries. Give me a break.

The only clueless people are the ones tuning into this voyeuristic nonsense that is making this woman a fortune. She has made enough now, why not donate the “winnings” to a charity? Nope all for her own gain. Over and over again.

Thank you x

That's not true. If the tax bill is £750,000, she would have made £1.5 million. Not insignificant but certainly not millions!

Ooh no thanks (but thank you, as ever, for posting Blondes).

There is something just so incredibly off about the amount of publicity - and no doubt, money - that KG has made from her husband’s illness and death. I wonder whether the poor man had any say. Did he want to be so relentlessly exploited in this way?? Could he consent?

So, I’ll be swerving this one.

This 💯

Icantbedoingwithit · 26/03/2024 09:48

His own company was in huge debt so that’s where the tax bill comes in.

westisbest1982 · 26/03/2024 07:20

Judgemental shit.

God, the irony @Janiie

Sorry, 'judgemental shit' was quoting another poster who thinks that those who have a an opinion on these programmes and books are 'judgemental'.

I feel sorry for Garraway and her children. But I have far more sympathy for Derek who at his most vulnerable has been paraded in front of the cameras.

Yes we don't have to watch, i won't. But her 'spokesperson for the carers' self appointed role is just crazy. Why doesn't she say she wishes they'd been more responsible money wise? My dh is se he doesn't wait for the tax bill and acts surprised when he gets it.

Icantbedoingwithit · 26/03/2024 09:55

If you have £1 million of debts, sell your £4 million house and buy a £3 million one. The ITV salary will be more than enough to continue paying the school fees for the youngest. Don’t even get me started on many many thousands that Kate has spent on Derek’s care and the trips to Mexico for snake oil treatment. What do ordinary people do? All the unpaid carers?
She is paid hundreds of thousands for sitting on a sofa a few mornings a week at ITV, after which she gets directly taxi-biked over to Smooth Radio to earn probably another hundred thousand, she's been photographed many many times doing that. Her working day is done by 1pm. And that's without the book earnings, adverts, other appearances etc. Her life is extremely privileged for very little effort, relative to most people.

CantDealwithChristmas · 26/03/2024 09:59

Geebray · 26/03/2024 07:11

I always liked them as a couple

Did you? Why? He really wasn't a very nice man. He'd thrown people under the bus in politics, laughing about the mental health of an MP's wife with the equally dreadful Damian MacBride.

I don't see how he was earning much money before Covid. He'd been sacked as a columnist for Psychologies magazine after the scandal, and lost all his Labour contacts. The tax bill must be Kate's. She was the earner in the family.

Yes, 'Dolly' as he was known was said to be a pretty immoral and stop-at-nothing spin doctor. Got into loads of trouble in the New Labour years, boasting about his influence, driving nasty plots to smear political opponents and their innocent family members, all the worst tricks of the trade.

His obituaries (especially the Sky and Independent ones) are a masterclass of tongue-in-cheek disapproval and read-between-the-lines resentment - I reckon he did the dirty on a lot of people and probably had some nasty political skeletons in his closet.

Before anyone shouts at me, no I don't think that being a professional piece of work means he deserved the illness and death he had.

But it's relevant, because I do think that Garraway's actions have been an attempt to control the narrative of his life and therefore to bury any more insalubrious stories that might otherwise have come out about him.

You could call it a classic piece of New Labour type spin.

Still has to be paid, and is still going to be approx. 50% of the income.

Yeah raise money for your husband’s failing business costs, trips to Mexico that he wasn’t able for and your lavish lifestyle, private schools and your 4 million gaff you won’t sell to pay your debts.

MoonWoman69 · 26/03/2024 11:42

I've never been a fan of hers, but even less of one now for her shameless grifting.
Let's get the story "out there" again and get some more coin in for Kate!
If she sold up, a 500k house would suffice for anyone and their children, leaving 350k to pay off debts! But no, she wants to keep up the lifestyle she's accustomed to, so that won't be an option. We all have to make sacrifices, when things like this happen, but we don't all have the luxury of being in the public eye!
She would have had more respect had she backed out of public life and quietly got on with it, instead of exploiting every angle of his demise that she could! I have absolutely no sympathy.
And if you don't want peoples opinions OP, don't create a thread where you may have to read ones that differ to your own!

Medical bills? Were they private or do you mean the Mexico trip?

I believe costs of carers, like care homes, are assessed on a means basis so surely they only paid what they could/should. Tbh I bet her celebrity status afforded her more privileges service wise and kinder attitudes than most receive.

Posters saying 'if you went though it you'd understand' or 'i hope you dont experience similar' well I would suggest most of us who question the ethics of this have possibly endured extreme challenges ourselves either directly or caring for relatives so I think we are more than entitled to share our mostly polite but definitely critical views on this.

Doing whats best for her family??? Making millions off a dead msn’s plight over and over again? Too right she is doing the best for herself and her family! Milking it! How people are so blind is beyond me. She is not doing it out of love for Derek or for awareness, she is doing it for money. Keeping every red cent for herself. You can understand the first one but 5 huge money making schemes later and she is still at it?? Come on! Donate at this stage!

Yep 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

HisHandsAreInMyHair · 26/03/2024 14:00

I think it’s says a lot that people are mentioning her house value and private schools etc.

As has been said, it’s not your decision to make, no matter how much you don’t like it, you are completely irrelevant to Kate and her family. You might not watch but others will. Suck it up.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2024 14:06

Its not the fact people are disagreeing with me and yes I posted about it and that everyone had to agree with me ......

But I am amazed at the sheer hate of Kate on this thread

Till you have walked in someone shoes .........
