This will be a real tear jerker

i watched the two previous programmes she and Derek did

this is the final year of Derek life and told in his words

Kate Garraway (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/kate-garraway/) will front a new ITV programme documenting the last year of her late husband Derek Draper’s (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/derek%20draper/) life: Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.
The Good Morning Britain (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/good-morning-britain/) star’s husband died in January (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/derek-draper-tributes-kate-garraway-husband-covid-123921217.html)
after his battle with COVID.

She previously made two programmes about his health struggles — Finding Derek and Caring For Derek — and will now share his final chapter which will air on ITV on 26 March.

The film starts in May 2023 and looks at the final year of Draper’s life, including both sweet family moments and an insight into his health battle.

But it also looks back and reflects on his life before he contracted COVID in 2020, including his career as a political adviser, his romance with TV star Garraway — who he has two children with — and how Draper’s illness changed their relationship while they maintained their close bond.

The film also highlights the challenges faced by those living with serious illness and disability and those who care for them and will feature contributions from Draper’s carer Jake.

The programme is set to air in just a few days, close to three months after Draper died at the age of 56.

It will be on ITV at 9pm on Tuesday 26 March.
Documentary was Derek Draper’s idea
Garraway has said that she hadn’t planned to make a third documentary but that the idea came from her husband.

Obviously when we started making this documentary early last year, we had no idea the events that would unfold that ultimately took Derek from us,” she said. “And in January 2024, after he had passed, I wondered if it was right that it should ever come to air.

"But I didn’t want to let those who have given us so much support over the last four years down, and the carers paid and unpaid who in their thousands of letters to me, feel Derek’s story has given them a voice. Also, I remember so vividly that the idea of making this third documentary at all came from Derek himself.”

She went on: “At the beginning of January 2023, he’d been released from a four month spell in hospital for sepsis and we were very positive about his recovery. Derek was determined to keep on getting better and improving.

One day, we were sitting together while I was caring for him and he suddenly, from nowhere, asked, ‘Are we making another documentary?’ I said, ‘Well I hadn’t really planned to. Were you thinking that you would like to?’ And he said firmly, 'Yes'."

The presenter said she told Draper it should be his story, in his voice, explaining: "Derek got very emotional at the idea, because his words and speech were so limited and there were so many things he wanted to say about the struggle we were all having as a family and he wanted to speak up about it."

When she asked Draper what his main message was, he replied: "Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love."
“We had to find a way of allowing Derek’s voice to be heard and while having to finish it without him has been so hard, I am delighted that the film is a tribute to Derek and his incredible spirit,” she added.

I could think of nothing worse to watch.

ENOUGH!!!

Icantbedoingwithit · 24/03/2024 17:18

Poor Derek the cashcow, milked to the absolute max.

Ryegate · 24/03/2024 17:23

For goodness sake!

Have we not learnt from last week's events?
Walk a mile in someone else's shoes maybe?

westisbest1982 · 24/03/2024 17:32

I won’t judge her because I can guess the pain she’s in, and seeing the pain her children are likely in, must be horrendous. Plus, she’s said more than once about the financial impact she and her family have had to deal with, because of Derek’s illness (indirectly). Like a PP said, maybe it’s needs must. I know I would do pretty much anything to keep a roof over me and my family’s heads.

AlwaysGinPlease · 24/03/2024 17:51

I think it's tragic and she really needed the money to care for him and just to live. Such nasty comments on here. Let's hope you're never in that position hey.

Icantbedoingwithit · 24/03/2024 17:55

2 books and 3 bloody documentaries! How much more can she milk it?? If she were raising money for a charity it would be different . She lives in a 4 million quid house!
Never has a mans death been more commercialised since they crucified Jesus.

mondaytosunday · 24/03/2024 17:58

When I saw the title of this thread I thought 'jeez she's milking it'. I'm a widow myself and while one documentary was worth it to raise awareness of the long term effects of Covid this is too much. I couldn't imagine doing that if it was my husband. Surely there's nothing more to add?

No just more money to be made.

Walkingtheplank · 24/03/2024 18:00

I'm relieved to see that so many people think this is exploitative.

My children are about the same age and I wouldn't be filming their father like this.

StarlightLime · 24/03/2024 18:01

Georgieporgie29 · 24/03/2024 14:25

I’ll be watching. It sounds like it’s something he wanted to do and he wants his story out there so there’s no one better to tell it than him.
I do think it will be a hard watch though.

His story is very much out there already.

Surprised to read so much negativity about this, although I can understand why some are skeptical. The only thing I have to add is that Kate was left with massive bills to pay, as they suddenly lost one income and their costs increased dramatically. Maybe it's a case of 'needs must'.

It’s so sad her husband died. I don’t agree with so much be shared as, like others said, he didn’t consent.
If she’s left with bills then she might need to get a different job rather than re-selling the story over and over.

JenniferBooth · 24/03/2024 18:20

Its bloody awful what happened to Derek but i did get the impression that he was used as a poster boy to get people to follow the Covid restrictions

She apparently has a £750,000 tax bill to pay for Derek. Although her house is worth 'several million', it's not a mansion, but a semi in London.

I'm not necessarily saying she's doing the right thing here, but none of us have walked in her shoes.

MissyB1 · 24/03/2024 18:49

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/03/2024 16:21

I am also surprised at so much negativity

I always liked them as a couple

And yes she prob did the tv stuff to pay the bills of 24/7 care and huge medical bills

If we were in her place would you not do the same ?

I think I would tbh

I agree with you. And yes I will be watching.

LipikarAP · 24/03/2024 18:50

They lost two incomes (I.e. hers for part of the time too), must have been paying £150,000 a year for carers, and presumably didn't want the kids to have to move home and school at a time the oldest was nearing GCSEs and they needed stability. No-one is forcing anyone to watch it.

queenofthewild · 24/03/2024 19:05

Regular people with no understanding of how the media work are exploited by Tv producers every day of the week.

As a TV producer, Derek would have understood exactly what being part of these documentaries would involve more than anyone. As a family they have huge care bills to pay plus the loss of one salary.

The shows aren't for me, but there must be an audience for them otherwise they wouldn't be commissioned and screened.

I can't criticise Kate for her choices, but I count my blessings I've not had to make them.

👏🏻👏🏻 This. I’m sure it’s a case of needs must.

Janiie · 24/03/2024 19:19

I like Kate Garraway, she seems a nice person but I don't agree with this. How can someone so neurologicallly altered give actual consent here.

This is too much and while I've no doubt her intentions are good I think she should have protected her husband's privacy and dignity. We don't need to raise awareness of the challenges faced by those disabled and with chronic medical conditions, many experience it daily caring for their loved ones.

I hope we don't get a 'one year on' follow on.

Will you give over! 4 million pound house, back working, 2 books, 3 documentaries, not to mention life insurance etc. She’s milking it for every penny she can get to keep the life she is accustomed to. This is not your average Joe Soap family who went through the same thing and did a Go Fund Me. This is blatant, his illness, how she cared for him and now his death for PROFIT! Not for a charity but for her own gain. Shameful carry on.

Blondeshavemorefun · 24/03/2024 20:24

Wow at the replies

No one has to watch it

I hope none of you - suddenly have your husband in some kind of illness /accident and need 24/7 care for rest of their life

You would do anything you could to keep roof over you and your child's head and try and keep some normality

I hope he had life insurance from years ago and that mortgage will get paid off

As that's one less worry

Yes still have thousands of medical bills to pay

I thought he was a political lobbyist turned psychotherapist?

motheronthedancefloor · 24/03/2024 20:41

Glad to see i'm not the only person who feels uncomfortable with KG putting her husband all over the telly. To me, it is less about raising awareness of long covid and more about gathering sympathy / raising her profile / making a political point. If, god forbid, I was in his position, I definitely wouldn't want to be on TV

HesterPrincess · 24/03/2024 20:59

She's a horrific grifter of the worst kind.

She has bulldozed over his consent for her own publicity, and even now instead of supporting her kids through losing their Dad, she's back at work promoting yet another "poor me my husband got covid" documentary.
