KATE GARRAWAY. DEREKS STORY. TUE 26 March - ITV 9pm

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/03/2024 21:22

This will be a real tear jerker

i watched the two previous programmes she and Derek did

this is the final year of Derek life and told in his words

Kate Garraway (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/kate-garraway/) will front a new ITV programme documenting the last year of her late husband Derek Draper’s (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/derek%20draper/) life: Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story.
The Good Morning Britain (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/tagged/good-morning-britain/) star’s husband died in January (https://uk.news.yahoo.com/derek-draper-tributes-kate-garraway-husband-covid-123921217.html)
after his battle with COVID.

She previously made two programmes about his health struggles — Finding Derek and Caring For Derek — and will now share his final chapter which will air on ITV on 26 March.

The film starts in May 2023 and looks at the final year of Draper’s life, including both sweet family moments and an insight into his health battle.

But it also looks back and reflects on his life before he contracted COVID in 2020, including his career as a political adviser, his romance with TV star Garraway — who he has two children with — and how Draper’s illness changed their relationship while they maintained their close bond.

The film also highlights the challenges faced by those living with serious illness and disability and those who care for them and will feature contributions from Draper’s carer Jake.

The programme is set to air in just a few days, close to three months after Draper died at the age of 56.

It will be on ITV at 9pm on Tuesday 26 March.
Documentary was Derek Draper’s idea
Garraway has said that she hadn’t planned to make a third documentary but that the idea came from her husband.

Obviously when we started making this documentary early last year, we had no idea the events that would unfold that ultimately took Derek from us,” she said. “And in January 2024, after he had passed, I wondered if it was right that it should ever come to air.

"But I didn’t want to let those who have given us so much support over the last four years down, and the carers paid and unpaid who in their thousands of letters to me, feel Derek’s story has given them a voice. Also, I remember so vividly that the idea of making this third documentary at all came from Derek himself.”

She went on: “At the beginning of January 2023, he’d been released from a four month spell in hospital for sepsis and we were very positive about his recovery. Derek was determined to keep on getting better and improving.

One day, we were sitting together while I was caring for him and he suddenly, from nowhere, asked, ‘Are we making another documentary?’ I said, ‘Well I hadn’t really planned to. Were you thinking that you would like to?’ And he said firmly, 'Yes'."

The presenter said she told Draper it should be his story, in his voice, explaining: "Derek got very emotional at the idea, because his words and speech were so limited and there were so many things he wanted to say about the struggle we were all having as a family and he wanted to speak up about it."

When she asked Draper what his main message was, he replied: "Never give up fighting for what you believe in and for the people you love."
“We had to find a way of allowing Derek’s voice to be heard and while having to finish it without him has been so hard, I am delighted that the film is a tribute to Derek and his incredible spirit,” she added.

Derek Draper's friends share emotional tributes as Kate Garraway announces husband's death at 56

There has been an outpouring from love for Kate Garraway after she announced her late husband Derek Draper had died aged 56 following Covid.

I’m a bit shocked by the lack of sympathy to be honest. I mean just because others have gone through it doesn’t mean we can’t have sympathy for her.

Long term illness can result in severe debt and loss of earnings so her trying to manage that is hardly reason to berate her.

I wouldn’t like to be in her shoes. I got the impression he was consenting to the programme , albeit I accept his absolute to fully grasp what was going on was maybe limited.

It was a hard watch but the realities of care are hard to watch but a hell of a lot harder to experience .

I wish her well

Surprised to read so much negativity about this, although I can understand why some are skeptical. The only thing I have to add is that Kate was left with massive bills to pay, as they suddenly lost one income and their costs increased dramatically. Maybe it's a case of 'needs must'.

Indeed. It's not my cup of tea to watch but good for her to make money if she can.

Should she be in debt due to this happening (which she says she is). Should anyone have to experience huge debt to care for someone adequately? That's a wider discussion. Which is partly the point I suppose.

ssd · 26/03/2024 08:42

Some of these comments are disgusting.

Its obvious she utterly adored him and if making these documentaries helps her then who are we to question her ethics.

And i hope she does find love again and i hope the children grow up to be happy and successful. Its just heartbreaking their dad won't be here to see it.

ssd · 26/03/2024 08:47

Sorry @Blondeshavemorefun but im reporting this thread. I know its plain your intentions are good, but some of the comments from others are really just nasty. Totally not in the spirit of mn. So if the thread is deleted, which i hope it will be, its not against you personally.

Simplesalmon · 26/03/2024 08:49

I’ve done the same SSD, as I said on my response above. I’m quite shocked at the nastiness

Good grief but I’m not surprised. Couldn’t stand her when she did I’m a Celeb. The lisping, jolly hockey sticks manner. Wish she’d piss off now; but I daresay she won’t. Poor Derek. How on earth did he put up with her. Then when he was ill he wasn’t allowed any dignity with the endless cameras shoved in his face. RIP mate x

Only he wasn’t your mate. You are clueless and irrelevant to their lives.

Helps her? Lines her pockets more like! One programme would gave been enough but no, she is on her third plus 2 books. How much money does she actually want to milk from his illness and death? Surely all her “debt” are already paid and she is still sitting pretty in her 4 million pound house raking it in with tea and sympathy from gobshites who buy into this ghoulish money making scheme.

Look out for the others now in quick succession.

Life Before Derek
Life After Derek
Love After Derek
Derek a year On
Me after Derek
What Kate Did
What Kate did Next.

Absolute vulture of a woman.

ScierraDoll · 26/03/2024 08:56

I won't be watching, it reeks of exploitation and hypocrisy
He wasn't a particularly nice man if you read about him and she has played the grieving wife/widow a bit too much.

The only clueless people are the ones tuning into this voyeuristic nonsense that is making this woman a fortune. She has made enough now, why not donate the “winnings” to a charity? Nope all for her own gain. Over and over again.

I’ve been here 12 years and, quite honestly, this is in the top 10 worst threads I’ve seen because of the many disgusting and bitchy posts on here.

Hang on a minute. If Kate Garraway was an ordinary woman who lost her husband in the same way and kept doing Go Fund Me’s to make money for herself and her family over and over again would that be ok? Because that’s literally what she is doing. You can talk about raising awareness till the cows come home but she is NOT donating the money, she is profiting off it. When is enough ENOUGH?

I am disgusted at some of the replies tbh

The hate for her

For doing what she thinks is best for her family

Yes she has made her life and Dereks public but what they have gone through as a family I wouldn't wish on anyone

I won't be watching.

I have every sympathy for the way he and she suffered, however, the man is out of his misery now and there's not really any more I want to know about it.
We already know the story.

I assume as they had started filming she wants to show it and Derek agreed or there wouldn't be filming

But agree anything after would be wrong

And yes losing a husband is awful

Your heart is ripped and shattered into a million pieces

I hope she finds loves again sometime I. The future

Doing whats best for her family??? Making millions off a dead msn’s plight over and over again? Too right she is doing the best for herself and her family! Milking it! How people are so blind is beyond me. She is not doing it out of love for Derek or for awareness, she is doing it for money. Keeping every red cent for herself. You can understand the first one but 5 huge money making schemes later and she is still at it?? Come on! Donate at this stage!

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/03/2024 09:24

Isn't this the third one ?

But as they filmed it when Derek was alive I understand why she wants to show /use it

So if you were faced with care and tax bills totalling a seven figure sum what would you do?

By all means show it but at this stage of the game donate the money and help other families. She has made enough.

DarrylPhilbin · 26/03/2024 09:28

The problem with inviting the world in to view your family's private affairs is that people will inevitably have an opinion on it. You are either private or you're not. You can't have it both ways I'm afraid.

Seizethedog · 26/03/2024 09:29

Having seen her on GMTV I feel more sympathetic. She’s up to her neck in debt. I still have mixed feelings about it though.

LizzieSiddal · 26/03/2024 09:29

I think the programmes are ground breaking. They show the reality of her life (which is pretty privileged) and will make some people think about what it’s like for those who don’t have her privilege. If it makes a few people think before judging others and joining in with the Tory’s by calling them “inactive” then good for her.
