The new series is set to air this month, with Watkins leading the cast as Simon, a mild-mannered family man who is pushed to breaking point when everything in his life seems to take a turn for the worse.

As if things couldn't get more awful for him, he makes a split-second decision when he's confronted by local teenager Jordan (Joe Barber) outside his own home.

The start of the video sees Simon given the bad news about being made redundant, followed closely by wife Beth (Claire Skinner) handing over a letter from the mortgage company.

Simon then comes across a group of teenagers assaulting an elderly man, trying to interfere to get them to stop.

But it's that interaction that seems to rile up Jordan, who tracks Simon down to his home where the pair get into a scuffle, which leads to Simon punching Jordan – with fatal consequences.

The next we see is that Jordan has been rushed to hospital, with his parents left to watch on in horror as doctors attempt to save him.

But with the community labelling Simon as a 'local hero', it's not long before the truth comes creeping up on him, and grumpy neighbour Harry (David Bradley) tells Simon that he saw him and what happened on that fateful night.

Will Simon be able to keep the truth from coming out, or will he be found out sooner than he'd like?

Pretty happy with the ending overall. Not sure what I expected really. Glad Paul didn't kill Simon - that moment when we thought he shot him 🤯 He knew his son was a little shit and Simon was a goodun. Some terrific acting (unlike Love Rat last week). Enjoyed it.

Hedgerow2 · 22/03/2024 09:28

I thought this was really good. Jason Watkins is always good but I was very impressed with the actor who played Jordan.

TheAverageJoanne · 22/03/2024 09:54

I don't really understand why Paul was turning up around Simon all the time.

commonground · 22/03/2024 10:07

I also don't understand Paul's fascination with Simon - and when he said he liked him. I mean, Simon wasn't exactly the most scintillating company.

Also, it kind of all hung on the neighbour's role, (giving Simon another chance to save Jordan's life, for real this time) and yet his character was the least drawn out and ambiguous and he must have been landed with the jail time at the end? He was kind of the fall guy without a compelling reason. So just because he put the bins out on the wrong day he gets to take the flack for Simon?

Plus Jordan... talk about 'I get knocked down, but I get up again'.... he must be some medical miracle - the weediest kid ever to survive two traumatic injuries.

Actually - that's true. I assumed it was because he thought Simon might not be being completely honest with him about what happened and was trying to catch him out. But then he looked completely shocked when he found out.

He's the new Michael Myers!

I don't really understand why Paul was turning up around Simon all the time.

I think he was determined to find out who'd hurt his son so he could give them a good hiding and was frustrated with Simon being so vague and unforthcoming, making him all the more persistent. I think he was also genuinely grateful to him for "saving" Jordan.

curiousasacat · 22/03/2024 11:23

Just finished this- I really enjoyed it.

I think Paul knew something about the account of that night wasn't right and being a "gangster" he can probably tell when people are lying so he knew in his gut Simon was hiding something.

Regarding liking him, I feel like he liked Simon because he was a fundamentally decent bloke. When you make your living from beating people to a pulp and it becomes "normal" to you, maybe in a weird way you admire those who play by the rules. It must be a very stressful lifestyle and I got the impression he did it purely for the money rather than the fact he actively enjoyed harming people so maybe Simon represents what his life would have been like had he not taken the violent route he did.

Chipstick10 · 22/03/2024 12:38

The way paul was crying when he was watching footage of his two boys when they were little made me feel compassion for him.

Welcome @SabreIsMyFave

Thank you @Blondeshavemorefun . Smile Sorry to take so long to respond. I only just noticed! Blush

I really enjoyed this. One of the best dramas in a while IMO.

I do love the Ch 5 dramas!

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/03/2024 15:06

I also felt for him @Chipstick10

No one should have to bury a child

@SabreIsMyFave no probs

I love a ch 5 as well

Beth was very fortunate to find an inhaler for her daughter so close at hand !!

However, it was a much better ch 5 drama than normal , thoroughly enjoyable .

purpleme12 · 22/03/2024 17:04

And then she took the inhaler with her so now the other person doesn't have one. 🤣

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/03/2024 17:21

Wasn't the usual blue relief one either

I felt a bit for him too. (The lad's dad.) He's just a product of his environment and upbringing. Deep down he has a heart,

Does anyone else think that Jonas Armstrong, who plays Paul, is a dead spit of a young Paul Usher (Barry Grant in Brookside)?
I thought they must have been related but don't appear to be.

Yes, very much so

ReadyTeddy1000 · 25/03/2024 00:37

Finally watched this. For once, an entertaining C5 drama, that wasn't riddled with plot holes.

I always wonder how Jason Watkins manages to film scenes about grieving parents or dads with young daughters, it must be so hard, with what he's been through x

I thought the same.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/03/2024 20:56

@ReadyTeddy1000 I also thought the same. We have to watch the film where he and his wife talk about his daughter's death, as part of our recognising sick children training. So sad.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 27/03/2024 23:06

I got half way through Ep 2 and called it quits but it looks like it might be worth returning to ......

Paul2023 · 31/03/2024 20:21

Hasn’t watched this yet so not reading the comments. But channel 5 seems to have a thing about filming their dramas abroad.
Any reason why ?

The couple next door, then there was that other drama with Jo Joyner last year . Just curious why they don’t film them here.

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2024 21:46

Enjoyed this series - just flagging it up.

JMSA · 10/04/2024 17:09

I've just finished watching the first episode of this. It's good and I'll continue watching, but I just can't take to Jason Watkins as an actor. I don't know why I have this reaction to him. I just find him really cringey.
