Anyone interested in the build up this year? I have been more aware this year as the songs are announced. I like Croatia, Ireland and Finland. Dizzy is hopefully going to do well which makes it exciting - Olli Alexander should be good performing live and he is well known in Europe.

Just reading about the controversy with Israel’s entry and I see that Iceland might send a Palastinian singer.

Ukraine have been the favourites for a while but Croatia is just ahead of them now.

Malta should have been in the final!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 12/05/2024 18:07

Yes. He seems like a sound lad. Also he didn't have any gimmicks apart from pyrotechnics.

And I actually think that maybe did him favours when there were so many "busy" entries this year.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 12/05/2024 18:11

It's hard to stand out though and not to get lost in the crowd. Slimane managed it but even he had his work cut out for him.

misszebra · 12/05/2024 18:11

Isaak was IMO the one with the most RAW talent. He has a fantastic stage presence. I think he should've come 1st, I'm glad he did better than expected at least but he was miles better than the Swiss, Croatia etc (though I did love Switzerland and they were my number 2)!

I am still gutted about this one and not just because I'm obsessed with her dancer . I love girly bops and I think hers was visually and sonically the most interesting this year, and the most professional presentation. I hope she's not too disheartened, she seems a sweetheart!

Absolutely - he didn't need the whole theatricals to shine, that voice is so powerful! Raw talent without the circus around it.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 12/05/2024 18:13

Malta reminded me of Chanel from Spain two years ago. She was brilliant at dancing and singing.

AprilDecember · 12/05/2024 18:21

Yes Chanel was an exceptional performer, she could have won it in any other year (and I'm sure Spain is even more "we'll never win again!" than the UK). Malta suffered a bit from this comparison I think, but Chanel didn't invent the dance break or that sound - it's a popular style of music in this era. For me I slightly prefer Loop as a song, and I think Sarah is a slightly better singer. But there was something iconic and camp about Slo Mo, and maybe Loop was a little more generic and therefore in people's"nice but I'm not gonna vote" category. But they are both good tier bops for me and weren't I'm competition, so I'll take both!

I think the German guy did infinitely better than even he could have imagined last night. Germany have had some shocking scores in recent years, including nul points, 12th is perfectly respectable especially when the song and performer didn't have as much publicity or attention as pretty much anything that came top 11. Well done Isaak.

This is my feeling. Germany will have been really please with that result. Given the number of times in recent years they've been placed in the bottom two.

I also think it exceeded expectations.

RedToothBrush · 12/05/2024 20:56

A few new details in this. I hadn't clocked they cut the traditional 'good to go'.

Who is Joost Klein, what did EBU do to him and why was he disqualified from competing in Eurovision 2024 for The Netherlands? In this thread everything will be explained.
#Eurovision2024 #Europapa #joostklein
Pic: Joost Klein with his friends Appie Mussa and Stuntkabouter

Joost Klein was born in Leeuwarden, Friesland (The Netherlands), in 1997. He lost both of his parents at a very young age. Luckily he had his brother & sister. At 10, he started a YouTube career as EenhoornJoost. In 2017, Joost stopped making YouTube videos & began making music.

Joost Klein has a few popular songs like 'Friesenjung', 'Ome Robert' and 'Wachtmuziek'. In the song 'Florida 2009' Joost tells about the passing of his parents. Klein performed this song for the first time at Pinkpop 2022. "This song is just for my parents."

In December 2023, Joost Klein's lifelong dream came true when he was chosen to represent The Netherlands at Eurovision. His song "Europapa," unveiled on February 29, 2024, is a heartfelt tribute to Europe and his late father, reflecting his belief in a borderless world.

Europapa is produced by Teun de Kruif (Tantu Beats), with a special contribution from DJ Paul Elstak, one of the founders of the happy hardcore genre. It's the first Eurovision song ever to hit the #1 spot in the Dutch National Top 40 for a total of 5 weeks (overtaking Arcade).

Joost performed Europapa in the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest on Thursday, May 9, where he managed to qualify for the final. During the press conference, Eden Golan (Israel) was asked a question she didn't want to answer. Joost then asked 'why not?'

The next day, Joost's afternoon rehearsal was abruptly canceled. Why was it canceled? Why was he at the flag parade rehearsal but not the song rehearsal? Then, the Dutch flag disappeared from the dressing rooms in the Arena. Joost's whereabouts became uncertain.

Before the jury show Thursday evening, there was no communication from EBU, Eurovision, AVROTROS (Dutch radio and television broadcaster),or Joost Klein. The audience waited in the arena, only to learn that The Netherlands wouldn't perform. Was it related to the press conference?

Later it became clear there was an investigation ongoing regarding an incident with Joost Klein and someone else. Swedish news said it was physical. Because of the investigation, he wasn't allowed to perform at the jury show. The professional jury assessed a previous performance.

The crowd at the jury show sang Europapa a few times and cheered for Joost Klein. Meanwhile, the media had been harassing Joost Klein at his hotel to get an answer to all of this. A few hours later, it became known that the Swedish police had been investigating the incident.

Voting for the rest of the world this year should've started Saturday at midnight because of the timezones. This had been delayed for 2 hours, but after those 2 hours the rest of the world still couldn't vote. There had still been no information from EBU.

The Grand Final should start later today. Without any information, nobody was sure it could even take place. In the morning, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported that an incident took place on Thursday evening with a female TV employee, with a complaint having been filed on Friday.

Later that day, it emerged that Joost Klein was interrogated late Friday, along with the complainant. The case is now with the public prosecutor, who will decide what happens next. The settlement of the case could take weeks. Still no info from EBU or AVROTROS.

At the same time, a meeting took place with the boss of NPO (Dutch broadcaster), which was already planned before EBU started the investigation. EBU and AVROTROS were also at this meeting.

Finally, the Swedish police shared that a man is suspected of 'unlawful threats' that took place at the Malmö Arena. No information had been released about the nature of the threats. It was clear that there had been no physical altercation, only words were used.

The press gathered behind the hotel: a statement was coming any minute now. The statement from EBU: Dutch artist Joost Klein has been disqualified from the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.

AVROTROS disagrees with the statement made by EBU. "The whole incident is blown out of proportion." Multiple former Eurovision participants have supported Joost. Käärijä (Finland, 2023) and Alessandra (Norway, 2023), withdrew from giving jury points on behalf of their country.

The disqualification has provoked strong reactions and EBU must do something. At this point, Martin Österdahl (Executive producer), is being boo'd offline AND online. During the family show, the presenters even SKIPPED the segment where they cut to Martin's 'good to go'-command.

AVROTROS had released a statement: Joost, in a rush to the greenroom, was filmed despite voicing his objection. This led to him gesturing threateningly towards the camera, though he did not touch the camerawoman. This incident was reported.

AVROTROS offered the EBU to prevent DQ: - Joost publicly apologizing - A talk between all parties involved - Shared statement between AT & EBU The camerawoman doesn't want any contact with AT & Joost. EBU stood by their decision.

Cornald Maas criticized the EBU ("Fuck EBU"), while screens in the pressroom displaying 'Justice for Joost'. EBU now only permits flags of participating countries and rainbow flags in the Arena. A Dutch woman had to hand in a flag with 'Joostice' and 'Bring Joost back' messages.

NikkieTutorials, set to award 12 jury points for The Netherlands, withdrew just before the Grand Final. Martin Österdahl stepped in. EBU mentioned the camerawoman has a 'different story' about the incident but didn't elaborate. Despite this, the Grand Final commenced.

During the Final, Joost posts an IG Stories video with dogs with the song 'Who Let the Dogs Out'. AVROTROS reports Joost is feeling down. After the Final, at Euroclub afterparty, Joost takes pics with fans: "I'm not about negativity." Next day, he shares a blue heart on IG.

Joost Klein is now doing "okay". He's today's top gainer on the global Spotify chart, rising 93 spots to #38, with his song receiving 2,572,467 filtered streams on May 11. Since the Semi-final, he's gained over 660k followers on IG. I'll keep this thread updated as needed.

The Swedish police have reportedly let him go, and Appie has just spoken out on TikTok for the first time, saying that Joost was disqualified for “basically nothing”.

Appie has just posted on Instagram: "Some believe the blue bird is a symbol of joy and hope"

According to Aftonbladet's sources, Joost Klein broke the photographer's camera during the incident and reportedly acted very aggressively. However, there are also multiple sources (including AVROTROS) stating that the camera is damaged, not broken.

Important to note is that Joost Klein did not want to be filmed when rushing to the greenroom after his performance. AVROTROS claims there was an agreement in place about this, but the camerawoman was unrelenting.

Joost Klein is now back again in The Netherlands. Welkom in Nederland jonguh

they don't expect much as they are used to STILL being punished for the Second World War - hence the lack of public votes.

Wakin' up in the mornin', and I'm, I'm feelin' like ooh-la-la.

Moved over to Copenhagen this morning. Lovely city. Last place on my bucket list.

Cracking atmosphere in the Eurovision Village last night. Biggest cheers were for Spain, Croatia, Switzerland and - bizarrely as it turns out - UK.

Absolutely the right song won.

Delighted that Armenia and Luxembourg did well.

I can see why Olly didn't go down well with the voters. There were simply too many other better songs and better singers and of course his target audience is pretty much diluted by run of the mill fans and viewers at home.

Despite what fucking Bambi Thug thinks, it's not actually a LGBTQ+ event. It just happens to be wonderfully inclusive. God she got on my nerves in the end. There was so much bloody unprofessionalism in that hall this week. Few have covered themselves in glory.

I actually felt sorrier for Spain. They must be wondering what hit them.

I genuinely don't know what to think about the Israel song except that the protesters and boycotters clearly picked the wrong vehicle to try and hijack and given what she was up against, her performance was flawless.

I hope that wasn't my last in-person Eurovision but when I compare this year to 2002 when I first went, the earlier one was so much more enjoyable. There was a drag act from Slovenia but no props or "staging" as such. It really was all about the music.

Maybe it needs paring back. I just don't know.

RedToothBrush · 12/05/2024 21:21

Portuguese broadcaster RTP to present a “formal protest” to the EBU if it concludes that the Portuguese performance was “discriminated”. Also wants an explanation about the alleged fake cheers used during Israel’s performance.

This comes after RTP confirmed the Portuguese delegation saw the Israeli team harassing other contestants and delegations during the week.

RTP’s President revealed that the EBU told them iolanda’s video was delayed because “your competitor has pro-Palestine motifs painted on her nails”. RTP answered with the following question: “what does that have to do with anything?”

^^

Yes they were being punished in 2010 which was even closer to the second world war and they went ahead and won it.

Copenhagen is fabulous. Its a totally different vibe to Malmo.

Glad you had a good time and have a safe flight home.

I think I will do Eurovision again, but not next year. After this year I don't think I can deal with it again until the EBU basically sort their shit out.

In the public vote, Germany scored 243 points and in the jury vote the nation scored 187 points".

I stand corrected! thank you for correcting me, always happy to be proven wrong when I am.

Douzepoints · 12/05/2024 21:50

Haven't been able to get online all day and was too exhausted (also aurora hunting as soon as the contest ended) last night.

Not sure there's much I can add which hasn't already been said. I enjoyed the contest as I always do but definitely not as much as usual.

Very pleased with the Swiss win as that has been my favourite song, along with Italy, for months. I really came around to Baby Lasagna this week in the live shows and they were a worthy second place.

Gutted for Olly and hope he is OK. He seems like a genuinely lovely bloke and undoubtedly hugely talented but this song and performance just didn't come together. Although, as I've been saying to everyone who'll listen today; nobody votes an act "out" and it's perfectly possible that across 37 countries, Olly might have been everyone's 11th favourite act - but that translates to zero points.

My only hope now is that the UK folk/BBC don't see this as a huge failure and decide there's no point in even trying anymore. We need to learn and move on from here, not back to the days of Englbert and the like.

I was getting so annoyed last night as I do every year with WhatsApp comments from family and friends as well as social media and the threads here. So many people just not understanding how it works yet confidently declaring what kind of thing "they" (the generic othering of Europe/non-English speaking countries) like and that they all vote for us to have null points because they hate us.

SiL lived up to expectations by complaining first about Spain, then Ireland and UK. Far too much corruption for young children.

I felt more sorry for Spain than any other country in the end. That song will go on to be a eurovision classic and they deserved more recognition on the night. On a really pedantic note, I was annoyed with Graham Norton constantly telling us the song was called "Zorro" (and the band Nebuloso). It's a tiny detail and probably imperceptible to most UK viewers but that "O" instead if "A" totally changes the very powerful title and message of the song. Surely it's his job to learn and be able to introduce each act properly - it's really disrespectful otherwise.

My feelings about Israel are far to complex to go into here but I'm not surprised by their result and happy it didn't go any further than that - I truly believe the contest would not recover from the implications of an Israel win.

Petra was wonderful and I'd like to be her friend! I thought that her "We like it too much" number should have been performed in last night's interval though and Linda's ode to Martin/EBU in the semi. It would have fitted better that way around and obviously ended up being badly timed with all the negativity towards Martin.

Normally I wake up giddy after eurovision final night, especially if my favourite has won. Felt quite flat this morning though.

Overall, my abiding feeling is that the EBU have failed in duty of care to participants on so many levels.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 12/05/2024 22:01

I noticed that too about the mispronounciation of 'zorra' and it annoyed me too @Douzepoints!

In an interview with Pomponik, LUNA has alleged that members of the Israeli delegation and media harassed and provoked her fellow #Eurovision artists.

"[The attacks] were just unpleasant situations that were rude and inappropriate."

Swedish media saying there was no physical incident now. It was just verbal.

But then...

According to Aftonbladet's sources, Joost Klein broke the photographer's camera during the incident and reportedly acted very aggressively. However, there are also multiple sources (including AVROTROS) stating that the camera is damaged, not broken.

If a camera got damaged and/or broken, then the interchange which got him disqualified was not just "verbal". All very odd.

Maybe they mean that he never made contact with the woman specifically. For example, he hit the camera knocking it out of her hand instead of pushing the woman herself. Might be different legal thresholds for what a physical altercation between 2 people is.

Whatever it was, "Just verbal" does not damage a camera.
