Is anyone watching this on channel 4?

I found it quite interesting but as other posters are saying some of the comments made were uncalled for and it would make me uncomfortable to have to listen to that if I was on the jury. Found it quite odd how easy people found sharing their opinions of people without much evidence or background.
Really want to see how this unfolds though and hopefully some of the more close minded people will learn something from taking part..

Radiat · 26/02/2024 22:23

Quite unsettling to watch this, especially with the amount of misogyny and victim blaming.

And the guy who just casually admitted to throwing cups of coffee at his wife?! But it’s apparently ok now, because that was in the past. Shocking.

Cowboybuilderwoes · 26/02/2024 22:26

I was actually cast for this show but couldn’t make the filming. I can actually answer so many of these questions but mainly, yes they did purposefully find people with strong views in certain directions.

Yes I felt like I would have said shouldnt you be on the stand?
I hope I would say something if I was in there with all of the ridiculous comments but maybe I wouldn't.
Trying to remember it's edited also. So maybe someone did say something.

So not totally random?

No - it’s a VERY long recruitment process. I spent at least 3-4 hours being interviewed on my political beliefs, how I respond in certain situations, what I understand of the legal system, my opinion on things in the news. We also had to do Myers Briggs tests, you can see the ENTJs in there a mile away.

FiveFoxes · 26/02/2024 22:42

Even without selecting those with certain views, it would never be equivalent to an actual jury as these people have applied to be on the show.

It doesn't stop it being interesting though. But not so much for the jury parts.

JewelleryCat · 26/02/2024 22:43

I got annoyed that they seemed to have breaks after every witness which I don’t think happens in an actual trial

@Cowboybuilderwoes why such a long recruitment process?

I have been following the Constance Marten and Mark Gordon trial.

There are constant stoppages and breaks
Surprised me more so than in the Letby trial.

Now that does surprise me. I thought they’d break for lunch and maybe some deliberation time before they went home but surely all the constant stoppage would be very disruptive

Me. The utter misogyny being shown is absolutely shocking! So many angry men.. laughing about a woman who’s got children with different fathers. What were Channel 4 thinking!

What do you mean
These are real people. That's all channel 4 are trying to show

purpleme12 · 26/02/2024 23:24

FiveFoxes · 26/02/2024 21:49

Me too. Surely people don't actually say things like that in real life Shock

There will be SOME people who do

Had to stop watching. Shamed they used a real.case as it's an absolute disgrace of a programme .
No respect

Of course there's SOME people who do
Or possible they're trying to find bad things to say about the woman and that's the only thing they can think of
(Not saying it's bad but people who are trying to find bad things to say will grab onto anything)

purpleme12 · 26/02/2024 23:34

Sorry don't know why multiple posts

Romeiswheretheheartis · 26/02/2024 23:34

Plenty of people say things like that, and a lot worse, every day - I've worked with some of them. You've only got to look at social media to see how quite a significant proportion of the population think.

KnickerlessParsons · 26/02/2024 23:47

One thing for sure - I'm going to make sure I never commit a crime! I'd hate to be judged by a jury like the two on this prog. Some of those people are definitely not my peers.

WingingItSince1973 · 27/02/2024 00:16

Agree with a lot of comments. I was surprised at how many of them thought he must be a nice man because he spoke softly! All the excusing of killing his wife is astounding! The 'oh she must have been really annoying. Or I wonder what she did to make him snap' or words to that effect!

Goblinmodeactivated · 27/02/2024 00:40

Astounded at the unfettered misogyny, and not just from the men!!! Really making me question the jury model if this actually representative in any way. of the sort of conversations that happen…

Walkingtheplank · 27/02/2024 01:24

I've often said if I was being tried and was not guilty I want only a judge whilst if I was guilty I'd prefer a jury. Doesn't seem that I'm wrong there.

You can definitely see how many men are found not guilty of sexual/violent acts against women. What a disgrace.

TheSnowQueen · 27/02/2024 06:25

bows101 · 26/02/2024 21:49

Yes, I have NC for this as I also knew the victim.

I'm sorry this must be rough. I'm presuming the family consented to this. I guess if someone close to you is violently murdered you aren't going to get over it any which way.

I agree, especially when it comes to violence against women.
It Should be shocking but whenever there's a big news story related to these types of crimes out comes the misogyny.

Mischance · 27/02/2024 09:10

It is a shame they did not choose the juries randomly but sought to pit different "types" one against the other. It rather negates the whole point of the exercise. The desire to make what they see as "good TV" seems to override a semblance of authenticity.

I keep typing a response and mumsnet goes back 😡

All tv recruitment processes are long, I’ve done many shows and this wasn’t a standout in terms of process.

They wanted to know who was for or against trans, liberal ideologies, and very heavy on death penalty.

I think it is important to note that the general pop are represented by this bunch, it could very much be them that is a normal jury in a real trial.
