This looks really good and meant to be very powerful

3 parts on this week mon Tue and wed

After the huge impact of Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, another social and political reckoning could be coming with the searing new three-part drama (https://www.stylist.co.uk/tag/drama) Breathtaking.

Based on palliative care doctor and writer Rachel Clarke’s personal memoir about the Covid-19 crisis, the hard-hitting series is an account of the life of a frontline NHS doctor through the pandemic.

“There is so much misinformation and rewriting of history around what really happened inside our hospitals during the pandemic,” says Clarke.

“The truth is, NHS staff gave everything they had in impossible conditions that sometimes cost them their lives.

It is an honour to try and depict the courage and decency of my NHS colleagues on screen, and I’m so grateful to ITV and HTM Television for giving me the
chance to show the public the truth.”

The three-part series is based on Rachel Clarke’s personal memoir, where she wrote about her own experience of working during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Set in a fictional big-city hospital, the drama narrates how frontline medical staff endured fear and frustration as they desperately tried to save the lives of coronavirus patients,” reads the show’s synopsis.

It recounts the devastating impact of the pandemic through the eyes of acute medicine consultant Dr Abbey Henderson (Froggatt).

Who is in the cast of Breathtaking?
• Joanne Froggatt as Dr. Abbey Henderson.
• George Georgiou as Hue.
• Lucy Montgomery as Clare Boxall.
• Georgia Goodman as Divina Aquino.
• Jodie McNee as Jules Jarmen.
• Mark Dexter as Mike.
• Bhav Joshi as Dr. Ant Vyas.
• Henry Meredith as Tommy.

I've just watched all three episodes. It's a hard watch but I thought it was excellent.

PawsisShady · 19/02/2024 21:03

I don't know if I can watch it
Help made me cry

colouringindoors · 19/02/2024 21:05

Watching now. I think its an important programme but expecting it to be a tough watch.

colouringindoors · 19/02/2024 21:09

A friend of mine was an ITU Nurse through Covid. She now has severe ptsd and is unable to work. I hope this programme shows her reality and that of thousands of medics.

JenniferBooth · 19/02/2024 21:10

Are they going to show the untested elderly patients being discharged into care homes?

PermanentTemporary · 19/02/2024 21:15

I felt like this patch just before lockdown was the worst of all, in fact. Nobody knew anything, the guidance changed all the time, I was more frightened than I knew.

Aslockton · 19/02/2024 21:17

Glad I have the subtitles on. I am picking up so much more of the dialogue.

What does ABG stand for?

Arterial blood gas

Aslockton · 19/02/2024 21:18

Ah, that makes sense.

Sleeptastic · 19/02/2024 21:19

Classic Jed Mercurio dialogue with abbreviations all over the shop.

PawsisShady · 19/02/2024 21:23

I've switched it off. Was sent home from work early on and shielded with no ability to get food as the supermarkets wouldn't put me on the list. It was not great, I went hungry for a while and lockdown was announced on my birthday just to add to the fun

PermanentTemporary · 19/02/2024 21:30

Bloody hell @PawsisShady.

JenniferBooth · 19/02/2024 21:30

@PawsisShady that is shit that that happened Flowers

Is that who made it? It’s very hard hitting

RoseBucket · 19/02/2024 21:43

I lost two relatives in the early weeks of Covid, not sure if I’m going to watch or not, anyone else watching who lost family?

Looking forward to this! (Although that's probably the wrong word considering what it's about!)

I've watched one and half episodes a-n-d that's all I can take right now, maybe watch the rest whenever I feel strong enough . The government are cunts .

Choux · 19/02/2024 22:06

The splicing of the dramatic scenes of the words of the public statements being made - particularly Jenny Harries talking about PPE delivery issues being resolved- was very powerful. That woman was a dreadful Gov sycophant. But she got her damehood so she's probably happy.

colouringindoors · 19/02/2024 22:08

Very powerful, very bleak but important insight into horrendous lack of PPE for NHS staff. UK politicians and NHS managers so arrogant thinking UK would be fine. Guidance written by who??? completely out of touch with ground floor of hospitals. Interspersed with real statements from Johnson, Hancock, Harries. Rage-inducing. "They just keep coming" hospitals overwhelmed WAY before government locked us down. Unimaginable working conditions. Friend of mine, an ICU nurse has ptsd as a result and is unable to work. I don't know how NHS staff survived mentally, let alone physically.

colouringindoors · 19/02/2024 22:09

@RoseBucket I'm so sorry. Personally I think it would be an awfully hard watch for you from the 1st Ep I've seen.

Yes, lost my MIL. And caught Covid myself in March 2020 which has left me with lifelong (possibly - probably?) health issues. It's a difficult watch, not sure I can watch any more episodes. Probably shouldn't have watched this one if I'm honest. Utterly harrowing.

Blondeshavemorefun · 19/02/2024 22:13

Wow Kirk so just about to watch on +1

GrandTheftWalrus · 19/02/2024 22:18

I watched it. The UK fucked it all up. Ignored what was happening and let everything be open too long.

I wonder if they'll mention the temp hospitals. I worked at one.

placemats · 19/02/2024 22:18

@PawsisShady so sorry to hear that, my heart goes out to you and everyone else who had to work with the unknown and a 'guidance' that was seriously out of date and deadly.

I attended one COVID funeral and knew someone else who died with COVID.

Shocking to revisit it. Our family locked down two weeks before it was called by Johnson.

Had no option but to decline the offer to go back to care work. Still feel slightly guilty about that. Couldn't do it and my children begged me not to.
