Our Flag Means Death. It's utterly brilliant and I am obsessed!

I'm sure I found a thread on this series a while ago, but now season 2 is out I've looked back and I can't find anything apart from the renewal petition.

For anyone who hasn't come across it yet, I would thoroughly recommend. It starts off as a sort of workplace comedy set on a pirate ship, sort of in the style of Ghosts, and with a similar fanbase to Good Omens. When the 2nd lead character arrives at the end of episode 3, it starts to change and it only hit me two thirds of the way through season 1 that I was actually watching a very different sort of show to the one I thought I had started watching.

From that point it's phenomenal. The attention to detail is superb. Both leads are clearly neuro diverse, from abusive backgrounds and damaged because of these. They both want what they think the other one has. It's about them discovering themselves, accepting themselves for who they really are, and healing. There is comedy, but also heartbreak and despair. The show handles these so sensitively and accurately, down to minute details, and Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby deserve every award under the sun for their work here.

I don't think I've ever obsessed about a show as much as this one. I've tried to make this not too spoilery in case some of you want to watch it, but really I just want someone to talk to about it! I've already watched it countless times and the more I rewatch the more I appreciate it. I said I was obsessed and I really am!

The show has sadly been cancelled, despite its popularity, and the producers are currently trying to see if it will be picked up by another network. I have read that they are keeping an eye on the iPlayer numbers as part of this, so I also wanted to shamelessly plug it here 😁

If any of you haven't seen it and fancy giving it a try, it grows into itself in the first season and you really need to give it at least 4 episodes (episode 4 is where the main story really starts). Its not a show I would have thought to watch myself (DD wanted me to watch it with her) but I'm so glad I have.

I don't really know what I want from this thread really. I want more people to find it, but I also want to just talk about it and obviously can't do that without more spoilers than I've already given. Help me out people!

Must do school run…

MrsBruin · 14/05/2024 15:15

@MrsJellybee I’ve started to hide how much I’m still watching OFMD.
My DH has commented on how my phone battery has started to run down suddenly but does not know exactly why. I’ve confessed to ‘an interest’ which was probably a bit obvious as I can’t help gasping ‘Steeeede!’, whenever Rhys’s advert for Xero comes on tv.
@Phineyj I found Calico Jack Frat Boy Antics so distasteful I've only seen that episode once.
I’ve also only seen that once and am glad I am in good company, though I do whiz through to Lucius the break-up therapist too. “Long night?” “I don’t know”.

Is the Basingstoke thing over now?

I must say I feel embarrassed at the empty seats and really hope that Rhys and Vico and anybody else who came over had something else on as well. I hate the thought that they might have expected a full house and were disappointed.

BillStickersIsInnocent · 14/05/2024 16:26

I think from what I’ve read on twitter the organisation was a little chaotic. The queues for registration were too long or something so people couldn’t get in the room in time. Also something about people occupying seats but being asked to vacate them and stand at the back to make room for priority ticket holders…who were held up elsewhere.

So it may not be as bad as it looks, but it doesn’t look great does it.

Thanks for the info.

I do find myself feeling a bit defensive/embarrassed at the state of our country these days.

Yes that's it, thank you! I'm hoping the recording will turn up on Dan Schreiber's podcast.

In the meantime I'm very much enjoying Rhys talking about his goats

They are great. But the other ones I can appear to be reading but actually just be gazing at the adorable Rhys. I suppose it depends whether what I actually want is a bookmark or an excuse...

For gazing at I think I want something more substantial than a bookmark, but unfortunately my Etsy search for lifesize cardboard cutouts of Ed is drawing a blank so far. Don't they realise there's a market out here?

lizziesaurusx · 14/05/2024 16:52

I am intending to wear the t shirt to Lanzarote. Not sure how strong the OFMD fanbase is in the Canaries.

Maybe not strong now, @MrsJellybee, but once you get there and start distributing those copies of The Lighthouse...

I really want a break-up robe… I would need a lifesize Ed on which to hang it.

Well that's two sold at least... I love the teal breakfast in bed robe - beautiful.

Which version of Ed would you want? Hair fully up aka sad Ed, fully down aka ruffled Ed after beach fight, or that half down style he mostly wore as BB. And what is he wearing? Leathers, robe, ripped purple shirt, something else? This is very important research. Personally, I'd go hair up & purple shirt.

And you can get your own made, you know...

I really want the long version, but don’t think I can justify £128 on a dressing gown.

I adore the post-coital teal robe.😍 I wish we’d got to see more of Stede’s auxiliary wardrobe. Ed walking around in his boyfriend’s clothing the morning after is just so sexy.

I love after Ed’s chucked his leathers overboard wearing the robe and he’s taking a bite out of the toast.. you can hear him humming to himself, softly. I think of what he said to Hornigold in the gravy basket about the pros of living: warmth (the robe), good food (that marmalade seems pretty good), and orgasm… Stede was so good, Ed chucked his entire past identity away the following morning before the sun was
barely up!

That’s quite a serious question but luckily I’ve given the matter some thought and have the screenshots to prove it. Also I had to argue my case last week as while watching 2.8 my son made the controversial statement that Ed is at his hottest in the British army uniform! I was shocked – that hat and the full ponytail totally compromise the magnificence of his hair.

So definitely season 2 – no massive beard and not clean shaven. Hair is tricky - I’m very partial to hair up, as per sad Ed or Jeff the innkeeper, and also to a bit of sad Ed eyeliner. But I also love the hair half down/up, a bit ruffled – eg in the second YWFTW scene where I’m not surprised Stede wants to run his hands through it. It’s nicely tousled in the morning after scene too. Clothes – my first thought was the leathers, though now I realise that getting rid of the leathers symbolises him being freed from being Blackbeard I guess I should feel more ambiguous about them. So if not in leathers I’d settle for him in that teal robe, and t shirt Ed is good too - probably the black gravy basket one.

And you can get your own made, you know...

I wish I didn’t know that. I think that would probably qualify as tipping over from obsession into full on midlife crisis though.

I’d never directly connected the gravy basket list of hierarchy of needs with the morning after but yes, of course! Everything he wanted and, most importantly, someone waiting for him (I can’t remember if that’s the exact phrase). I love the music in that scene too – on my playlist.

Would you mind linking to or naming the music here when you have time? It’s gorgeous. It makes me think Ed’s head is a happy safe space for at least an hour…

lizziesaurusx · 14/05/2024 20:10

If you mean the music when he's throwing away the leathers it's Schubert, Impromptu in C Minor, Op 90, D 899 - it fades away just as he delivers breakfast.

It's always been one of my favourite things about that scene. Ed got everything he wanted to live for in Stede's bed (if the slightly burned toast counts as good food, that is 😂. Otherwise he got that at the coconut bar where he also got a nice call-back to the previous night, if Stede and his coconut are anything to go by...)
