Anyone fancy a watch thread? Loved the book by David Nicholls, loved the film, but it’s never really gained a strong following for some reason? The series stars Ambika Mod (This is going to hurt) as Emma and Leo Woodall (The white Lotus) as Dexter.

Yes, I’m excited for this.

I have mixed feelings about this. The book is in my top 5 favourites and I loved the film. Will wait to read comments here before i decide whether to watch.

I'm not sure. I think there's too much remaking of stories that have already been told well. Or spin offs from successful franchises.
I'd like to see something completely new.
That said, it will probably be very watchable.

westisbest1982 · 07/02/2024 09:42

Not sure about this. I don’t feel the book warrants a whopping seven hour TV adaptation, and one or two casting choices are a bit off.

Angrymum22 · 07/02/2024 18:39

I loved the book. I finished Uni in 1987 so the era it covers is my growing up years. I remember my DSis who also finished uni in the late 80s gave me the book and warned me that it would probably trigger so many memories. We agreed that it was like reliving our best years. Not so much the underlying story but the events and attitudes that are so different from today. I’m looking forward to the series, the reviews are positive but I’m stocking up with tissues because now, at 60, the memories are going to hit hard.
Hopefully the soundtrack will include the music I grew up with.
We are also making it compulsory viewing for my 20 something nieces who think that we were never “young things” with our own causes, beliefs and stories.

Well it has 5 stars in the Times today. It is 14 shorter eps, not 7 which apparently makes it punchier. A bit like normal people I guess?

The reviews have been mixed - five stars in The Guardian, two stars in the Radio Times and Rachel Cooke writing in the New Statesman wasn't keen.

Brumbies · 08/02/2024 11:45

Very boring, on ep3 and it's just so slow.

skyeisthelimit · 08/02/2024 13:16

I'm hoping my daughter will watch this with me (15yo). She hasn't seen the film or read the book.

I saw the film before reading the book and was so shocked when a certain scene happened. It really upset me.

I hope the series does it justice.

The pairing is off. Just doesn't ring true to me.

I liked it! An easy watch.

Bearpawk · 08/02/2024 19:36

I'm loving it so far! Binged 4 episodes today. Thought it's very beautifully shot. And the music is fantastic.

mypafology · 08/02/2024 19:37

Watched the first couple, liking so far. Finding Ambika Mod far more believable than Anne Hathaway- her accent has always annoyed me in the film

Agree with this. I wanted to like it but just feels…odd. Can’t believe the 5 star reviews. I’m only half way through the first episode though!

Chasingsquirrels · 08/02/2024 20:29

Will give it a try.
Also my era-ish (uni 1990-93).
Late DH brought me the book when I was unwell in our early days together & I loved it.

BlondeFool · 08/02/2024 20:32

Loved the book, hated the film. I'll try it.

Tallesttiptoes · 08/02/2024 20:40

Trying this after being completely devastated by the scene mentioned above when I read it. Love how evocative it is of student life in Edinburgh and 20s in London, bringing back lots of memories. It is very slow and I initially wasn’t sure but I am warming to it. I think Ambika’s Emma captures the awkwardness of the character in the book and the juxtaposition with Dex’s success and apparently effortless lifestyle in the early days. Remembering how annoyed I was in the book at the years that Emma seemed to waste in dead end jobs and with a crappy boyfriend. The way it is shot is very reminiscent of the tv adaptation of Normal People.

viktoria · 08/02/2024 20:49

I'm binge watching this just now.
Like it so much more than the film.

Think the cast is great and LOVE the music

Brumbies · 08/02/2024 21:15

I've given up after ep3 too slow and tedious snd unconvincing

Canyoucheckonme · 08/02/2024 21:34

Loved the book when I read it in 2020, never seen the film. Just finished Griselda (loved it) and looking for something else to watch so will give it a go and report back on here...

CopperLion · 08/02/2024 21:40

What scene are people referring to?? I’ve seen the film but can’t remember anything shocking. Not a spoiler because everyone here has seen or read it…

Have you definitely seen the film? I remember my sister screamed at the cinema! (she hadn’t read the book)

CopperLion · 08/02/2024 21:45

Yes, definitely. I must have a bad memory. If no one wants to put it here, what can I put in google that will help me find it??

Showmethebagels · 08/02/2024 21:53

‘Emma One Day’
