Anyone fancy a watch thread? Loved the book by David Nicholls, loved the film, but it’s never really gained a strong following for some reason? The series stars Ambika Mod (This is going to hurt) as Emma and Leo Woodall (The white Lotus) as Dexter.

Hi , I agree so much with what has been said . I loved the book . I think I quite enjoyed the film - although wasn't sure about Anne Hathaway . I had to google as to who played Dexter in the film as I just couldn't remember .

I really struggled with this at the beginning and until about 1/2 way through . It is also my era and I suppose I kept watching for the nostalgia factor . I was sort of 1/2 watching and I also completely missed / forgot about the whole premise of this , one day each year Blush.

I also agree that I didn't really like the chemistry between the two leads and to be honest failed to see why they kept in touch .

I did persevere to the end and I am glad I did as I do think it redeems itself and it does have an impact and makes you think about lost opportunities etc . It made me think about the cute guy I met on my last day of work as a student with a summer office job when we just seemed to click but the timing was off and the equally gorgeous overseas student , again the timing was off .

This is my era and I knew quite a few lads wearing rings on their index fingers at this point in time. My second boyfriend did (he came from a family like Dex’s) and then a few from very different back grounds at a metal pub I used to go to. Based on my personal experience the ring was in keeping with that time period.

Ah ok my bad! Obvs wasn’t mixing with the ring crowd 😄

I don't understand the love for this at all.

If any decent woman fell for a good looking guy who slept with everything that moved, had a drink and alcohol problem, no focus in life, lost jobs, dropped his friends, treated his parents badly and kept a woman who loved him dangling on a string with breadcrumb here and there & used her as some dort of emotional support puppy when others had enough of him, wouldn't we all be telling her to cop on and run a mile & telling him to grow up and be a better person?

Yet put it in a TV series and everyone wants a happy ending, no matter how dysfunctional!

Why is it that almost all new movies / series now have a mixed race actor/actress where it was white in the original one? Seems like making sure to make a point. I just cannot relate to this new version of One Day, not after Anne Hathaway. Nothing against the actress playing Emma but she is so wrong for this part.
Now go ahead and accuse me of being racist, I don't care.

I can just imagine one of the producers thinking "We can't possibly have two main characters in something as high profile as this played by white actors because we would get criticised as not being inclusive. Also, it ticks a box for us".

It's so predictable.

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 10/02/2024 16:41

I think the decision to cast non-white actors/actresses in situations where the audience is expecting a white face, is a deliberate attempt to compel viewers to ask themselves whether skin colour matters. Going by this thread, some people can’t buy into a story if the protagonists don’t look “realistic” to them. To me, this speaks to a lack of imagination and, in this day and age, worldliness on their part, and nothing more. Non-white viewers have been required to develop all this from the minute they started watching TV. It’s about representation, and the audience of these shows isn’t exclusively white. Evidently, the producers are happy to lose white viewers who can’t get on board with non-white actors because they’re outnumbered by those audience members, white or non-white, who can.

The casting of the next James Bond has some fans positively frothing at the mouth at the prospect of a non-white or bi/homosexual British agent, as though if he’s either of these things he can’t possibly a highly trained, intelligent, world-class, baddie-fighting hero. They just can’t imagine such a thing. And yet….🤷‍♀️

Is is the nostalgia factor perhaps? It's fairly easy to watch hence why I've kept going.

Binged it over the last two days and absolutely loved it. Read the book when it came out and loved it. I couldn't really remember much about the book but it all flooded back while I was watching.
An interesting little snippet: Dex looked at an 01306 number when phoning his parents. That is Dorking and the surrounding villages in Surrey, which made perfect sense. Beautiful and expensive.

When did the “1” come in? Also his Dad dropped him at Radley train station which is Oxon?

OneDaySucks · 10/02/2024 17:44

Not a fan of One Day, but some of the Edinburgh scenes were shot down my road. They spent a lot of time filming for what ended up being about 30 seconds in the first episode (the bit where they are walking to Emma's flat). The attention to detail was amazing!

That is interesting about the attention to detail. I did think it was funny when Dex chased her from St Stephen’s church and finally caught her up at the Vennel by the castle 😂.

OneDaySucks · 10/02/2024 17:54

More photos.... to be honest, it looked older than 1988 to me, but clearly my memory is playing tricks on me. These scenes were actually filmed on15th July.

Great photos @OneDaySucks, thanks for sharing!

Oh man. I read this on my phone and threw it across the room when I got to 'the scene'

I loved the book. It's one of my favourites of all time.

I've never seen the film didn't know it existed! Guess I'll jump straight into the series!

periodiclabel · 10/02/2024 18:34

Just to say, the scenes with Emma ‘s family in the book are very brief – for whatever reason Nichols decided to concentrate on Dex’s family. Her family could’ve been absolutely any nationality or background – it makes my heart sink to think that if you have an Indian appearance, there must be references to curries, arranged marriages, saris etc. I agree, I don’t think David Nichols was thinking of someone with an Indian background when he wrote the book, but I also would be a very surprised if he objected to the casting.

I thought he was supposed to be from the Cotswolds?

Of course he didn’t object, he was one of the producers of the series.
personally I am not warming to Ambika Mod, I think Leo Woodall is brilliant but there is little chemistry. He carries the whole series, the Ian and best friend actors are both awful.

EachandEveryone · 10/02/2024 20:30

I’m loving the music although the timing is way off for some of the tracks. RIP it up by Orange Juice and This is the Day was exactly when I was 17 and having my best times. I’m living the nostalgia

Itsbeentwoyears · 10/02/2024 20:44

I have watched it over two days. Loved it. Especially the music.

I’m surprised that people don’t like the Emma casting or didn’t feel the chemistry.

It was so enjoyable to find a series that isn’t suspenseful/psychological thriller etc.

i was caught out by the the sad episode though, despite having read the book years ago, I had forgotten. In the lead up couple of minutes I suddenly remembered what was coming.

the80sweregreat · 10/02/2024 20:48

I liked the book
The film wasn't great
Might watch this , but it's a lot of episodes

why in this day and age is race such a huge thing. Where I am in London, we know so many mixed race couples - and yes often white/Asian - it’s really not a big deal

what does her race actually have to do anything - the author himself is an executive producer of the show so is clearly happy that it is in line with his vision

people of colour have been erased from films and tv for years - who has played Gandhi, cleopatra, moses and Jesus in the past for goodness sake - and then some. So that’s a nonsense argument

-chemistry - the actors feel they have it according to interview so who are you to say they don’t

—ambika’s looks - she is a good looking girl but unconventional - and whatever race the actress is, most girls would either be too unattractive or too attractive to be Leo’s Emma - he is just so good looking

-unconventionally attractive - that is ambika. Just using an attractive brunette isn’t going to cut it is it - how boring. That’s what Anne Hathaway was.

westisbest1982 · 10/02/2024 21:05

For crying out loud, how naive are you?

Haha I think you are naive - and clearly you just can’t get over her race - says a lot about you

yes he will have seen pound signs but you don’t think he would have objected to putting his name to something if it actually caused him to recoil in utter horror

he is a writer and this is his main life’s work

use your brain. There are many people in this world who value something more than pound signs

I thought he was supposed to be from the Cotswolds?

Yes, I think I missed that. And a pp mentioned that the train station where his dad dropped him off is an actual station in Oxon.
So much for my sleuthing!
But the 01306 code did leap out at me though, as I used to live in the Dorking area.

Charlingspont · 10/02/2024 21:14

I'm watching it at the moment. The Dexter actor is brilliant, the Emma actor is also good but I liked her better in the drama where she was a doctor. I know what's going to happen at the end and not sure I can cope with the upset though! So might have to stop before the last couple of episodes.
