Anyone fancy a watch thread? Loved the book by David Nicholls, loved the film, but it’s never really gained a strong following for some reason? The series stars Ambika Mod (This is going to hurt) as Emma and Leo Woodall (The white Lotus) as Dexter.

Oh ok, I found it!

posiepawprint · 08/02/2024 22:08

Great book. Crap film

This seems good!

Showmethebagels · 08/02/2024 22:32

I actually want to watch the film again now! £2.49 on Amazon…

MissAmbrosia · 08/02/2024 22:45

Oh - I must watch this! I loved the book and remember sobbing on the bus at the ending. Though I know (but surprised) that there is a lot of hate for it. The film was not too bad as i quite fancied Dexter (also in the other Boleyn Girl) I am of an age where so much resonated - Uni in the late 80s, career and relationships in the 90s etc.

chickenpieandchips · 08/02/2024 22:45

I've read the book but not seen the series. I actually shouted out loud at 'that scene' whilst reading it on holiday . If you can't remember it are you sure it's the same story!

MajorCleven · 08/02/2024 23:09

It was brilliant, casting was superb. Very like normal people actually (which took me two goes to get into.) As a northerner who went to a posh Scottish uni I did relate to the first episode. I read the book years ago and it was absolutely perfect for a tv series adaptation in terms of structure.

TomatoketchupfromMandS · 08/02/2024 23:54

Amazingly I’ve never read the book or seen the film! But I don’t mind spoilers. Mainly watching because of the reviews & because I love the two lead actors. Leo Woolley was brilliant in White Lotus & so was Ambika Mod in This is Going to Hurt. I’m enjoying it so far, it’s a little slower than I thought it would be but I’m ok with that.

TomatoketchupfromMandS · 09/02/2024 01:38

*Woodall

Horsedoglover59 · 09/02/2024 01:57

Absolutely loved the film, but never read the book - I must do so now. Think I might skip the series though, as nothing can be better than the two leads in the film for me.

foxlover47 · 09/02/2024 03:18

Binged it all as have a few days off so no early start tomorrow
Really enjoyed it

^^
I read the book in 2009/10 and can't remember anything about it.

Sonora25 · 09/02/2024 05:04

Leo Woodall is hot and very good in it. Didn’t warm to Ambika Mod for ages. First episode is good then it gets very slow. I was getting bored and watched a few more episodes towards the end again. It’s all nicely shot (love a good rom com), but hated the music actually.

Teeheehee1579 · 09/02/2024 07:31

I am 5 episodes in. Enjoying it (similar era blah) but just cannot see any good chemistry between the leads. Normal people had fabulous chemistry and this just doesn’t hit the spot for me.

shearwater2 · 09/02/2024 07:45

Normal People book was ok, but I didn't really see what the fuss and hype was about. Just seemed an average young adult novel to me, perhaps I'd have liked it more if I'd read in when I was in the right age group. I had absolutely zero interest in seeing it on screen.

Completely agree with this.

I read the book in 2010, I remember everyone telling me they loved it but it left me cold; I liked the concept of it being just that one same day each year, but there were too many cliches and cheesy exchanges, and neither of the main characters were particularly likeable so I didn't really care about what happened to them.

I was hoping that this adaptation would help with that, I've liked both Leo Woodall and Ambika Mod in other things. But I find there's no chemistry at all between them and every episode I'm left wondering why exactly these two would be friends, or what they even see in each other.

I'm binging this. It's so bloody triggering. Watching it by myself because my teens don't need it and DH will find it awkward.
Had the boyfriend who thought he'd go into stand up and had to try out material all the time.
I ended up on TV, it was weirdly toxic, the false camaraderie.
The shitty poverty of working for a living and risk taking. It's left me with a chip on my shoulder with those in the arts who coasted through their twenties on family money.

The book didn't seem to hit home quite as much or maybe I'm just more vulnerable now my kids are close to being the age I was when having to deal with all this unlevel playing field.

Mindlesspuzzles · 09/02/2024 11:08

I loved the film, and thought it was much better than the book.
May give this a go, although I imagine it will have to be very well written to turn it in to a long series.

SpraggleWaggle · 09/02/2024 11:14

I've watched one episode and will give it a bit longer. At the moment I'm not warming to Ambika Mod as Emma- in fact I'm finding her quite unpleasant- but maybe that will change as we go on.

Justonemorecoffeeplease · 09/02/2024 11:15

Husband and I watched a few episodes last night. We loved it. The characters are just a few years older than us so we loved the music.

I've read the book, wasn't that keen on the film and think this version is better. I thought the acting and script were top notch.
We'll probably finish it tonight though I know we'll be in bits at the end.

tenpoundpombear · 09/02/2024 16:32

I absolutely adored the book, the film was ok but Anne Hathaway's accent spoiled it a bit!

Thought I'd give this a go, I'm on episode 4 and there's just zero chemistry between the leads and actually, zero chemistry between Emma and anyone. I don't know if that's just how Ambika decided to play her, really dry and abrupt and closed off. I might read the book again because I remember really liking Emma in that but here she's just not someone I'm getting behind.

Still, I've started it so I'll carry on!

Brightredtulips · 09/02/2024 17:08

I'm not enjoying Ambika in this role. However, the guy who plays Dexter is good. I loved the film and thought Anne Hathaway was convincing. I will stick with it though.

Showmethebagels · 08/02/2024 20:26

Agree with this. I wanted to like it but just feels…odd. Can’t believe the 5 star reviews. I’m only half way through the first episode though!

Yes, all his GFs are gorgeous and blonde and she is pretty yes, but not blonde. They just don't look like they belong together as a romantic couple. It's unbelievable he looked at her at uni and felt a pull to her

Namechangedforthis25 · 09/02/2024 18:45

But the whole point is that she is unconventionally attractive and a bit geeky, abrasive etc

he is gorgeous but she isn’t meant to be in the conventional sense - otherwise it would be about a gorgeous guy and girl falling in love - that’s not the premise

i am loving it. It’s so beautifully set and Ambika’s Emma feels so much more true to the book than Hathaway’s in the film (who was very conventional).

I wasn't sure we were meant to like her in the first episode, when she was lecturing Dex about his future it was really unpleasant. But I think she's supposed to have a massive chip on her shoulder at first and she gets more likeable as it goes on and she grows up.
