Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

I was at private prep school in the 80s (the headmistress was a nun as were some of the teachers!), and the attached nursery wasn't called pre school then.

They had such strong, topical storylines in S1-6, particularly. I miss that cast and those writers, though I did like Vanessa Kirby. Most people who left over the years got interesting offers, and/or had enough of playing the same character. The ones who stay endlessly are choosing stability and assured income over other, perhaps riskier options. (Except Linda Bassett who does passion projects in the off-weeks, and tilted head Turner, who can’t act but is a nepo-DH). Jessica Raine’s career, for example, never really took off into the stratosphere as expected.

Vanessa Kirby’s never been in CTM?

LimberlostLark · 06/02/2024 15:24

Maybe PP meant Jennifer Kirby - aka Valerie.

JSMill · 06/02/2024 16:10

I was raking my brain to think when was Vanessa Kirby in it!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 06/02/2024 17:04

I've just seen on fb that the beach scene was filmed during storm Agnes which is why they all looked freezing 🥶 😂

But not all "hospital births" were in actual hospital. I was born in a maternity home in the 70s and this wasn't unusual. CTM has their own maternity home so that's where they can carry on being midwives on site. Even if the order of St Nonnatus moved out of London as per the books (from memory) sometime in the 70s, the maternity homes didn't have to be staffed by nuns (mine wasn't anyway) so the midwives like Nancy, Trixie, Lucille, Jenny, Patsy and Shelagh etc would carry on working at the maternity home if home births weren't as common. Maternity homes were definitely still operational until the early 80s.

I'd love to see CTM reach the end of the 70s personally. I feel the 80s is when things really moved on but it's good for the 70s Smile

Yes I was born in South London in what was called a "maternity hospital" but it was just a large Victorian villa with 30 beds, fully staffed by midwives and nurses, and at one point with a few GPs seeing their own patients. It closed down in the mid 70s and seemed to operate much like the "Maternity Home" - so not a home birth, but still midwife-led (I was delivered by a midwife who was very like Nurse Highland in terms of appearance and bedside manner according to my mother.)

OnceUponATeabreak · 06/02/2024 17:27

Exactly ditalini, mine was the same except in a totally different part of the country. Same set up though - large converted Victorian villa, fully staffed with a matron, sisters and nurses.

I went to the same private all girls between 1994-2006 and the attached nursery was known as preparatory until well past the millennium.

It also went into operation there in Sept 1994 which was the same year I joined reception so evidently they hadn't had much need before then/it became a worthwhile business endeavour.

The nursery was known as 'the nursery' to differentiate because preparatory schools encompass ages up to around high school age. Though sometimes referred to as pre preparatory, the nursery.

Same at all private schools I attended.

Saw this episode, hadn't seen it for years. Was saddened by how naff and twee the whole thing was. Sad to see Trixie so changed and McGann poor acting, when he used to be so good.

shearwater2 · 07/02/2024 06:33

Jessica Raine has been in tons of stuff since CTM, loads of repeat roles in TV dramas and always working. I bet a lot of actors would love their careers to "not take off" in the same way 😅

Toddlerteaplease · 07/02/2024 09:50

@ditalini I was born in 81. My parents kept my birth announcement in the local paper, and several other babies were born at a maternity home. I was born in hospital.

BeadedBubbles · 07/02/2024 11:04

Whilst Sheila was beating herself up for not keeping an eye on May and Dr T was beating himself up for not anticipating the lung problem, why did Timothy at no point say it was all his fault for buying the lilo in the first place? 🤷‍♀️

And why is Trixie so oblivious to the huge placards her husband is holding up saying, 'I'm VERY worried and the clue is in my exaggerated facial expressions, my attempts to stop you spending money and my constant pouring over accounts..' 🤷‍♀️

And why is the acting generally so hammy and atrocious? It's like some sort of spoof - I keep expecting Jennifer Saunders to pop up as a nun or Paul Whitehouse as a stereotypical cockney geezer.

Saw this pic and thought of you lot 😂

I thought his sudden stop to make an IMPORTANT PHONE CALL during the drive and then getting back in the car with furrowed brow might have caused her some thought.

Did anyone else notice that at the start of the seaside episode that Fred Buckle was blowing up balloons which then floated, obvs filled with helium?
Useful skill, that 🤔

Yes! 😂

BeadedBubbles · 07/02/2024 12:44

@Warmwoolytights - absolutely! 😂

InMySpareTime · 07/02/2024 12:47

Maybe he was opening the already helium-filled ballons to breathe the helium for a squeaky voice?

Must be an aftereffect of the tetanus.

medicalmysterymachine · 07/02/2024 14:37

I'm sure the continuity people wouldn't be so silly as to expect us not to notice Fred inflated balloons with his helium breath.

Over the rest of the series more subtle clues will be dropped until it's finally revealed that Fred is an alien, sent to start the invasion of earth.

The final episode is just a disaster movie with nuns, midwives and sweaty landlords bloodily splattered throughout the East End.

Luckily Dr Turner is on hand to work out how to defeat the alien invaders and mansplains it to his yay brood. Mrs Turner has lost an arm but makes costumes for the survivors anyway.

Sister Monica Joan of course survives another year.

tallsmallmum · 07/02/2024 14:44

I remember "playgroup" fondly in the 80s and I remember trips on coaches like that in working order which could be a mistake or they lasted a long time and I remember haunted paintings like that

I thought Tim would be having a mask guilt trip about buying the lilo.
