@Trinity65 i spose they probably were, with views

I just had a mooch at any that are on sale and, indeed, short of a lottery win they are soooo dear

A 1 bedroom studio is on at 475K 😯

I am confused though, getting back to CTM, in that I am pretty sure Matthew had a rather nice large house in the early days of him being in it ?

LIZS · 25/02/2024 09:43

I think it was a Mayfair mansion flat, which it may still be where they live. Occasionally you see the "exterior" . It is quite small though, did her brother sleep on the sofa? So may be two bedrooms?

CecilyP · 25/02/2024 09:43

I recently went on a tour of the Barbican and the guide said it was built for social housing in a previously bombed and neglected part of the City

No, it was never social housing! It was built by the Corporation of London, so could technically be described as council housing. However the flats were charged at much higher rents, so were occupied by much better off tenants.

Warmwoolytights · 25/02/2024 09:58

It looks like there was a development next to it that was social housing, potentially people referred to both as the Barbican?

I’ve known a couple of people who lived in the Barbican. Both very wealthy people - one was a South African who had it as his London flat for visits.

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/02/2024 10:14

I have a very vague memory that there were two parts. The posh part and the not posh part.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 25/02/2024 10:18

The block they'd be talking about in CtM was not concrete jungle at all. Built around a lake, with a lake view for every flat. All mod cons in the kitchen. Maisonettes at the bottom, 2-story penthouses at the top, a staircase and lift for each pair of flats. Residents were MPs, senior City workers, minor aristocracy, the director of the National Theatre - both posh and trendy.

There was a social housing scheme on the neighbouring plot of land, perhaps the guide had confused them.

Yea, brother of Trixie had the sofa

Trinity65 · 25/02/2024 11:21

There is the slight, very slight considering the location, chance that they were intended as Social Housing.

I only say this as, many years ago now, my Nan's cousin and her husband had a house they owned that was the subject of a compulsary purchase order. They were paid what they were paid for it and bought a one bedroom flat at the top of Blackheath Hill, London.
They had been built as social housing but things happened and it did end up being sold to a company and then all the flats were put on the Market.

No, the previously built council estate immediately to the north is called the Golden Lane Estate. It was however designed by the same architects as the Barbican.

The Barbican flats were never intended for social housing.

MadeOfAllWork · 25/02/2024 12:18

There was a time, not long after WWII when councils bought houses directly from the builders. My own house is one of those. The street was built in 47 and the council bought them directly. Very few people realise that they were or are still council houses as they look exactly the same as the rest of the street.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/02/2024 13:47

I also thought that Matthew and Fiona lived in a large house in a good area. So I do t get why he now lives in a tiny flat with washing drying in the living room.

Everyone got their drinks ready for tonight's drinking game?

Ready, lasses?

WhatICallMyUsername · 25/02/2024 19:40

Is the little Boy going to be injured by the knitting machine whilst mum is in labour?
