Thoughts?

I was luckily able to watch this during work due to my job and it absolutely SHOCKED me to my core and really affected me.

Also they didn't seem to question him on her statement he basically had her bent over the drivers seat while he was behind her. How did she manage to rape him that way?

Most of the DV perpetrators I've known were "lovely". They still abused their wives and partners. Ditto child abusers.

Just because someone is lovely to their friends, colleagues and neighbours, doesn't mean they're not abusive within their families. I'm a bit Shock that police officers here don't know that.

I do know that first hand actually so
Don't lecture me .

You can tell if something is off - coppers nose .

Dv and abuse happens in all walks of life not just police . And there are many many lovely decent family men in the police as there are lovely decent women . These people you see on this
Programme are the worst of my job but we aren't all like that and not every male cop is a domestic abuser .

gurnerandpooch · 31/01/2024 00:10

I left my ex who was a sergeant because he was abusive . Controlling. Volatile.

He was however excellent at the job he did and while not popular with colleagues never put a foot wrong in the job .

I was also a victim in childhood so believe me when I say I have absolute empathy with anyone in a dv situation and little time for abusers .

I've agreed with everyone else here - don't pick a fight just because of my job .

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/01/2024 00:13

I know because I'm an Ex therapist who specialised in DV and worked with Women's Aid. Your wonky Copper's nose is one of the reasons women and child victims of police officers is doubly problematic.

I'm not closed minded. I'm not the one who thinks that cops who rape vulnerable women while on duty are great husband's and fathers.

https://midsomernorton.nub.news/news/local-news/panel-publishes-reasons-for-clearing-ex-police-sergeant-lee-cocking-of-misconduct-148317-merged

Here is the justification for Cocking's acquittal, including this unbelievable gem (I've bolded)...

Bearing in mind all that we know of Ms A's conduct earlier in the evening and Mr Cocking's mental health and his own conduct earlier that evening in terms of his dealings with Ms A which show no sign of attraction, we find that his version is more likely to be true than the suggestion that the sex between them was consensual."

I mean, wtf.

But at the end of that article, it says the Deputy Chief Constable was disappointed in this outcome, so they thought Cocking was guilty of misconduct. The Panel who made the judgement even imply that the police force was at fault for not investigating the woman for sexual assault. Why the hell would she call to report it if she had sexually assaulted a police officer? It's all so ridiculously convoluted, I can't understand how anyone found his account remotely plausible. I wonder who was on that panel, how are panel members selected, and are they properly qualified to make these judgements?

Aaaalrightythen · 31/01/2024 00:29

@Turkeyhen the fact they refused to let the cameras film said a lot to me. IOPC is clearly not fit for purpose.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/01/2024 00:31

The IOPC is toothless. Which leads to demoralisation and burnout amongst staff.

Turkeyhen · 31/01/2024 00:37

So the panel would have been made up of three people - a legally qualified chair, a representative from the police force (superintendent or above), and an independent panel member.

I wonder if any of the members of this particular panel were women Confused

Thatcat · 31/01/2024 00:49

Disturbing programme.
These police seem to do whatever they like on the job, and are then rewarded.

Lee Cocking is a disgusting rapist.
I’m utterly appalled watching this programme.

He was rewarded with a retirement - and we the taxpayers are paying him a final wage salary after he victimised and the vilified the woman he raped.

I hope she reads this and knows she is believed.

VivienneDelacroix · 31/01/2024 01:23

Turkeyhen · 30/01/2024 09:18

Just trying to get this straight: the counter corruption unit at Avon and Somerset police identify misconduct, the chief constable is involved, the matter is referred to the IOPC who independently investigate and make a decision/recommendation. Can the police force appeal if they disagree with the decision? Obviously in the Cocking case there were criminal proceedings which failed to convict, but the counter corruption officer seemed confident that misconduct would succeed (balance of probabilities) but ultimately it didn’t.

Is the IOPC the main problem here and the police force are essentially whistle blowing?

I felt this. That the chief constable is frustrated with the IOPC.
Either that or there's about to be a huge scandal in Somerset and Avon and she's doing some damage limitation and making sure the IOPC are held accountable.

MorrisZapp · 29/01/2024 22:51

Cocking has twenty years service. Chances of this being the first time he's abused a vulnerable woman on duty are going to be nil and no intelligent person thinks otherwise.

Agree 100%

Watched this last night and was so appalled.

The footage of him loitering around following her to various clubs to 'Find her friends' was utterly grim.

His account - were it not for the severity of his crime - was laughably pathetic.. and yes, if I was his wife I would be requesting my identity to be blurred too..
All the cosy hugs and hand holding on camera too. 🤢
Thick as a workhouse butty.

crampycrumpet · 31/01/2024 07:36

Lee cocking is disgusting

How could his wife just stand by him? I know he's couldn't

crampycrumpet · 31/01/2024 07:37

The programme made me sick to the core

So depressing

crampycrumpet · 31/01/2024 07:40

However, i have a family member in the police. New copper, about 2 years in

They spend an awful lot of time dealing with people with mental health issues Too much time.

They're on first response. Typically there sre two officers covering a nightshift for the whole area. They can often spend the entire shift managing one person who really needs medical help. Meanwhile criminals are left untouched.

Surely the system is broken and poli

Lifeinlists · 31/01/2024 09:23

According to what I've just read, this was Cocking's second trial. The first one in Cirencester couldn't reach a verdict. Was that said in the programme?

I'm sure he came over as very plausible- well scrubbed, softly spoken, poor little me, drunken woman taking advantage etc etc. - and the jury fell for it. As did the panel.

I wonder what people who know him really think now. Apart from his wife.

IClaudine · 31/01/2024 09:27

You can tell if something is off - coppers nose

Did "Coppers nose" sniff out that Sarah Everard's murderer was a monster?

The more you think about Cocking's story, the more it stinks. Why did he have a drunk woman alone in the car with him the first place? Why did the other police officer think this was OK? Why did Cocking park up in the place he did instead of dropping her home? That is just for starters.

The jury must have been thick as shit.

He is cushily retired on a pension larger than most people's earnings. We will end up paying him millions.

AuContraire · 30/01/2024 17:53

Have any politicians picked up on this?

Who's the current Home Sec, James Cleverly?

I didn't hear any discussion about it on the news this morning, maybe not enough people knew about it/watched it.

Of course they haven't, there's no money involved!

crampycrumpet · 31/01/2024 09:33

Im surprised the cockings went on the program . Although the wife didn't show her face, there cant be many mrs cockings in their town

crampycrumpet · 31/01/2024 09:34

Why would the Home Secretary want to
Discuss this?

Too many years of Tori austerity has broken this country

Public services have been annihilated

crampycrumpet · 31/01/2024 09:36

And did I hear right? Cocking had sex with the women outside the car?

Did the drunken woman drag the overweight cocking out of the car and rape him?
