Scandi noir: suggestions

I need a good, bleak Scandi thing to get my teeth into. Doesn't have to be new to telly/streaming, just new to me. Please don't just tell me to check out Walter Presents – I try, sometimes, but I'm getting a bit noir-blind with choice!
Let me hear your actual personal favourites.

Those I have loved include:
The Killing (the original and best IMO)
Trapped
Borgen (Yes, I've seen the newer/comeback season, about Greenland, too)
The Bridge
Those Who Kill
The Out-Laws
Rebecka Martinsson Arctic Murders
Ride Upon the Storm
The Legacy
Floodland

I know not all of these are technically Scandi, or technically that bleak, but basically I mean quality foreign drama, ideally featuring combination of some or all of nice interiors, nice threads and windswept/snowy/dramatic/melancholic landscapes.

TIA!

The Tunnel (English version of the Bridge)

There are two Facebook Groups which I follow which is very useful
Walter presents and
Fans of European and World TV Dramas.

Wallander with Kenneth Branagh

Twin. Set in Norway, I think. Excellent three part thriller. I don't know where you could watch it though, sorry. I watched it on BBC, always looking out for a sequel, but never seen one advertised.

I prefer the Swedish version but this one is good too.

Wisting?

mumofthemonsters808 · 23/01/2024 21:23

I’ve just finished Snow Angels it’s a Walter Presents on E4. it’s harrowing I shut my eyes at one point, I could not bear to watch, but I was gripped I just had to keep staying up to watch another episode.

Spiral is French but fits the quality foreign drama brief. 8 seasons too!

tennissquare · 23/01/2024 22:02

Spiral is my all time favourite show (you can miss the first 2 series and catch up easily).

DottyP · 23/01/2024 22:05

Spiral is my favourite too. Agree - get through the first series and it gets even better.

I was going to suggest Snow Angels too. It was excellent, but so bleak.

JemimaTab · 23/01/2024 22:19

I liked The Hunt for a Killer (Swedish series, was in BBC I think) - based on a real life case from the 1990’s. Also rather bleak, but very good.
And The Investigation (Danish), based on the investigation into the so-called submarine murder.
Not sure where you can watch them now, but worth keeping a look out for.

JemimaTab · 23/01/2024 22:25

Cry Wolf (Danish, Walter Presents) is also excellent IMO but not really a crime thing - it’s about a social services investigation into a family.

JediKnightingale · 23/01/2024 22:29

Not foreign language but the Canadian crime drama Cardinal has very Scandi noir vibes. As a fan of the genre I enjoyed it a lot. On iPlayer I think.

Definitely check out Chestnut Man as previously recommended as well!

Is this the Twin show? www.amazon.com/Twin/dp/B084BP8SV8

@Purpleandredandyellow yes! Thank you for the link 😊

LAvortonDeLaLitière · 24/01/2024 04:08

About 8 seasons of the wonderful Beck

MarkWithaC · 24/01/2024 09:09

Wow, thanks everyone.
That is a great tip about the Facebook groups.
I've watched Twin (not sure how a sequel would go?), Snow Angels (yes, so bleak!), The Investigation (excellent and so morally RIGHT) and Cardinal (loved it). I've tried either Wisting or Beck and didn't quite get on with it. Actually I might have tried both; they all blend into one a bit sometimes Grin

Wisting is the one where his daughter randomly pops up in every story in the manner of Cully Barnaby in Midsomer Murders 😂

God yes. The daughter is so annoying. I quite liked Wisting apart from that though.
