We try to watch an episode of a TV series or two in the evenings as part of family time and an attempt to get the kids off their gaming devices. What do you recommend? Kids are boys, 13 and 10.

We enjoy watching:
Bake off (and Junior Bake Off)
Masked Singer/Dancer
I Can See Your Voice
Pottery Throw Down
Traitors

Going to try Masterchef and the new Gladiator series.

Ghosts
Taskmaster bleeped
Outnumbered
house of games
the wheel
blankety blank
gladiators will be on the list now

my (very sensitive) 11 year old is obsessed with Once Upon a time, and did manage the first couple of episodes of Doctor Who (Christopher Eccleston) but has shelved that for now as the Victorian ghosts looked too creepy in the preview!

My grandchildren aged between 8 and 12 all loved Survivor recently and National Treasure on DisneyPlus but would recommend watching the films first.

pharmagal · 14/01/2024 11:20

Another vote for Survivor on BBC iplayer. My 11 year old loved it, as did I.

BertieBotts · 14/01/2024 11:23

I love things where you have real people going on some kind of process, like Race Around the World or The Long Way Around (can be celebrities or unknowns, doesn't matter).

Nestofwalnuts · 14/01/2024 11:23

I agree about Ghosts.

DC also loved Parks& Rec at that age and it has so many series. Very wholesome and silly.

Big Bang Theory and The IT Crowd are good I think. Not seen all eps so not sure if they are all completely suitable but generally good.

Gladiators sounds like a good idea.

notanoxfordcomma · 14/01/2024 12:00

Mine enjoyed one piece and stranger things

Mine enjoyed one piece and stranger things

Stranger Things surely too gory/scary for a 10 year old? It's rated 28.

TimeforaGandT · 14/01/2024 14:04

Merlin
The Musketeers

UsernameChangerRanger · 14/01/2024 14:33

Merlin is a brilliant bit of TV absolutely recommend it

Nineteendays · 14/01/2024 14:35

my 11 yo ds is loving ghosts. I’m gutted we’re on series 5 and almost finished it, it’s been brilliant to watch with him

Michiamo · 14/01/2024 14:36

Modern Family

Young Sheldon

AbbeFausseMaigre · 14/01/2024 14:40

Parks & Rec (although you need to stick with it for the first few episodes)
Brooklyn 99

notanoxfordcomma · 14/01/2024 18:54

@drmansplainer he loved it. He asked to watch it several times before we gave in, because many of his friends had seen it and he felt he was out of the loop. Prepared for him to bail at episode 1 but no, he was hooked. Lots of the year 6's were dressed in stranger things costumes at the last Halloween disco.
Different kids I guess.

SplendidPendips · 14/01/2024 18:57

Thanks all! I'd forgotten that we have also watched (and loved) Race Across The World and Survivor. Lots of ideas here to try. I love Ghosts and Taskmaster. It hadn't occurred to me to try them on the kids, so I'll give it a go. My youngest is quiet sensitive to anything remotely scary or tension building (he even found Race Across The World a bit much at times) so Dr Who and Stranger Things wouldn't work unfortunately. American shows often don't hit the mark so I'm not sure about Malcolm in the Middle but it has been mentioned a few times so I'll give it a go. Thanks for the recommendations, and please keep them coming if anything suddenly springs to mind!

My 12yr loves death in paradise and the spin off one set in SW. She’s very sensitive so we don’t watch any scary or sci-fi things but because the format is always the same she really enjoys it.

Figgygal · 14/01/2024 19:37

Sat next to my 12yo ds who is beside himself at gladiators

My boys enjoy Dr Who and Merlin, admittedly we first watched when they were younger - 9 and 7, but are rewatching all of the dr who series for the third time they love it so much! We desperately need new ideas, grateful for the thread!

rickyrickygrimes · 14/01/2024 22:05

Malcolm in the middle - we are on at least our third re-watching of this.
Modern Family
Ghosts
we are also watching all the old Top Gear, all the new Top Gear Grand Tour on Prime, all the spin offs - Clarksons Farm, plus the other two. they never seem to tire of these, especially the expedition ones.
Bob and Paul Fishing thing.

I have boys the same age and we're enjoying Superstore on Netflix (there are some sex themes/jokes but the 10yr doesn't get most of them or just stays quiet?). It makes us laugh out loud sometimes!

We also enjoyed Sweet Tooth and The Healing Powers of Dude on Netflix a couple of years ago.

Loved Black Ops and Champions on iPlayer (with 13yr old only), and we're now watching Grime Kids together. Too grown up for younger son but enjoying them with the teen 😊

Ghosts and Gladiators going on the watch list now!
