Netflix series recommendations that are mental health friendly please ie light but not superficial

I am looking for a new series to watch on Netflix but a bit lost with where to begin as there are so many. My mental health isn't great atm so can't cope with super heavy shows just now, however I don't want "fluffy and silly" either as I get bored and lose concentration. Needs to have a bit of meat but I can't deal with lots of tension or violence. I have liked Lupin and Downton Abbey and Velvet recently. In the past I enjoyed Suits also. I have just finished The Spy, which I liked but found the last episode a very hard watch mh-wise, even though I knew what was coming.

Any recommendations welcome!

I assume you have already watched call the midwife? Virgin river? It’s fairly fluffy mind. Motherland is hilarious if you haven’t seen it. Dead to me is good too - not too heavy.

Schitts Creek is wonderful. Takes a few episodes to get into it but 100% worth sticking with it.

GozerTheGozerian · 29/12/2023 22:15

I would say The Good Place. It’s fun and funny but has depth to it.

Annasgirl · 29/12/2023 22:16

The Recruit
Treason
The Diplomat
How to get away with Murder

and one of my great favourites

Extraordinary Attorney Woo

I loved Firefly Lane.

If you have youtube then Foil Arms and Hogg are really good. They are funny and the "oisin and his Mum" sketches are the best I think.

AndDrSamBeckettNeverReturnedHome · 29/12/2023 22:18

Bridgerton and Queen Charlotte if you enjoyed Downton Abbey.

Pure escapism

AdamRyan · 29/12/2023 22:19

Working Mom's
Physical 100

schitts creek is the only one that I think would fit the bill for this. It’s actually very good and so positive.

As you like historical stuff you might like Poldark! I loved and recently binged the

The Queens Gambit

Superstore or The Good Place are my go-tos.

AdamRyan · 29/12/2023 22:20

Oh, and Brooklyn 99 if you haven't seen it. RIP Andre Braugher

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 29/12/2023 22:21

Do you only have Netflix?

TeaAndStrumpets · 29/12/2023 22:32

The Law According to Lidia Poët, in Italian with subtitles. Highly fictionalised drama based on the first (?) woman lawyer in Italy. Fabulous costumes and snappy plot. Lidia is a great character.

hartof · 29/12/2023 22:34

Schitts creek definitely fits the bill. Give it a season it can be hard to get into.

Brooklyn 99 also is good and lighthearted.

HappyGG · 29/12/2023 23:02

Schitts Creek is one of the best series I've ever watched. It did take a while to get into it but I've seen it 3 times now and it still takes me laugh and cry then laugh again. Its brilliantly written and acted. Also, the American version of The Office is a very easy watch. Both these are silly but I wouldn't say fluffy. They both have short sharp episodes so you can pick up anytime.

Ewoklady · 29/12/2023 23:09

Not new on Netflix but incase you missed it- Poldark is lovely to watch

AndDrSamBeckettNeverReturnedHome · 29/12/2023 23:14

To balance I've watched all of Schitts, it is just OK imo.

NoCloudsAllowed · 29/12/2023 23:15

Lady dynamite and crazy ex-girlfriend are both fairly light and funny shows touching on mental health.

DecemberDreamz · 29/12/2023 23:32

The film NYAD - so good!

Also would agree that Schitt's Creek is fab! You need to past how unlikeable the characters are in the first couple of episodes though. You will soon love them! 😊

minipie · 29/12/2023 23:35

Seconding Firefly Lane

Bridgerton may be too fluffy but definitely MH friendly

PTSDBarbiegirl · 29/12/2023 23:37

Not sure re Netflix but I've recently rewatched Agatha Christie 3 parters and Les Miserables on BBC iPlayer and Strike.

Totally relate re: mental health and I like Suits for easy “take your mind off it” TV too. Would recommend, for more of the same:

Gilmore Girls
Young Sheldon
