Mr Bates vs The Post Office is a hard-hitting ITV1 drama starring Toby Jones, Monica Dolan and Julie Hesmondhalgh among others.

The series details one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history, where thousands of Post Office sub postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud and false accounting due to a defective IT system.

Mr Bates vs The Post Office follows Alan Bates (Toby Jones), a sub postmaster who decided to fight back against a scandalous miscarriage of justice.

He was one of thousands of sub postmasters and postmistresses who between 2000 and 2013 were falsely accused of theft due to financial discrepancies thrown up by the flawed Horizon computerised accounting system.

More than 700 were prosecuted and several went to prison while others lost their homes and life savings trying to pay back the money the Post Office claimed was missing.

Many were unfairly ostracised from their communities, who believed they were criminals.

In 2009 Alan Bates decided to form the Justice For Subpostmasters Alliance (https://www.jfsa.org.uk/), uniting thousands of his colleagues to
fight to clear their names.

Watching Angela on the stand in the courtroom.
It's like she knows she's been tumbled isn't it

purpleme12 · 07/01/2024 02:58

The post office asked the judge to go off the case cos they say he's biased against them!

purpleme12 · 07/01/2024 03:22

Absolutely shocking. Honestly.
The amount of people who went to prison!
And 18 people died without seeing justice 🙁
It is just so unbelievable and yet it actually happened

BBC news now reporting that 50 more potential victims have got in touch with lawyers as a result of the programme.

Wow

purpleme12 · 07/01/2024 04:11

Have signed the petition to strip her of her OBE or whatever it is.
I really want Alan Bates to get one

Pretty sure Jeffrey Archers prison sentence was a result of perjury.

I'm not sure what the protocol is as he has already declined an OBE . Unsure as to whether it'd be offered again .

Pipsquiggle · 07/01/2024 08:45

I watched the documentary last night which was very good.

I think what the drama achieved was how long these victims have endured this shit show.

I was aware of this story but it all happened in a drip, drip affect with no real impact. I would see some sub-postmasters on the news then not hear anything for a year or so.

This has really shown me how corporate giants just try to silence opponents and /or make their opponents bankrupt before they even see a court.

As someone who works in that area, I am very surprised that Fujitsu appear to have got away with this. Must be a very uncomfortable place to work at the moment.

As an aside, I note that Angela van den Bogerd appears to have removed her LinkedIn profile this week. It was definitely there on Monday, but it is no longer available. It still shows up in Google searches, but clicking on the link takes you to a "this page does not exist" page.

Good.

I hope this is a sign that she is thoroughly ashamed of herself.

She's in the doc as well I think, talking about the after effects of the ECT treatment she had. Which she hadof course as a result of the depression brought on by the Post Office evil mind games.

I haven’t watched the documentary yet but watched the drama yesterday, honestly I think what they did is worse than committing a murder. It’s kind to think Paula Vennells should only be stripped of her CBE she really should be in prison and all this taxpayers money wasted on sending innocent people to prison and on having to use nhs services for mental and physical health problems which were caused by this scandal 🤷🏻‍♀️

Blah12345678999 · 07/01/2024 09:44

Sadly I think this is the way a lot of things work in society and big corporations with people at the top. Unfortunately with this situation where people didn’t want to admit to mistakes there were far more devastating consequences.

Sadly I doubt it, she probably just couldn’t deal with the backlash she was probably getting 🤷🏻‍♀️

Vennals was CBE, Bates already has an OBE.
But she still needs to be stripped of her CBE, I agree.

It is, we're all upset and ashamed at the suffering and lives ruined (and there are lots of us who haven't been there for long). The mood is really low, especially as the company are still hiding behind the inquiry and won't make any statements. We can't believe they're not doing the right thing and paying up. There's a few of us who've donated to the Horizon Fund but we feel helpless. The current Head of Fujitsu UK isn't strong enough to lead the company through this and by rights, we should be on the excluded list for any future contracts. But as always happens, junior people will lose their jobs and senior people will walk off with a nice big pay off and into another well paid job.

Yes, indeed. It's regarded as a serious offence.

Maximum sentence is as much as seven years in jail, plus a fine.

Judges do not look kindly on people who lie under oath.

Hmmph · 07/01/2024 11:27

Rishi Sunak really irritated me on Laura K's program this morning when asked about the Post Office scandal.

I think he said it was all a long time ago in the 90s.

Which is so awful. Firstly it's still ongoing. Secondly it wasn't the 90s. Horizon was only introduced in 1999 I think. If Rishi Sunak can't even get this fact right it shows how little he cares.

Yes. Well he also said it was an appalling miscarriage of justice and the justice secretary is looking into mass wiping out of convictions.

Please don't try and make this a political issue. First 11 years of this was under Labour. Then Ed Davey and his chums were useless dealing with it when in the coalition. And the Tories been wholly ineffectual over the years too.

So let's see this for what it is. Highlighting successive British governments have been rubbish for 25 years.

Yes this really annoyed me! This is basics, how can he be trusted to take care of this if he clearly doesn’t even get what happened 🤷🏻‍♀️

Superlambaanana · 07/01/2024 12:05

All the careful wordsmithing, getting their positions clear, mentioning how awful it is - but didn't happen on my watch you know!! It's all revolting. Ed Davey should be ashamed and so should any MP who didn't speak up for the subpostmaster constituents, and so should every minister responsible for the post office and every prime minister since!

The imbalance between those in power and those who do the graft needs to end. These people are supposedly paid huge salaries because they have to take responsibility- well it's time they took responsibility and some heads rolled for once!

Superlambaanana · 07/01/2024 12:06

A very good comment on a Sunday Times article about this this morning:

Carroll Barry-Walsh

This is what the government should do:-

  1. Pass a law (this can be passed in a day) overturning all Post Office convictions 2000 - 2016, including of those who have died and regardless of whether they pleaded guilty.
  1. Start an immediate review of the law on computer evidence to ensure that we get a provision which works without placing the burden of proof on defendants.
  1. An independent compensation scheme which is not run by the Post Office and which will arrange for payments to be made within 3 months.
  1. A public apology by the government to the subpostmasters.
  1. Strip the Post Office of the right to bring private prosecutions
  1. Fujitsu must be made to pay compensation for its rubbish system and behaviour. Until it does no more contracts.
  1. Vennells and the other senior managers/CEO's of the Post Office from 2000 on who got honours to have these removed.
  1. The current Board to be sacked; they are obstructing the Williams Inquiry.
  1. The police/CPS to get the resources needed to pursue prosecutions of those responsible where there is sufficient evidence.
  1. All the lawyers, internal & external, who misbehaved to be referred to the police for prosecution or to the regulatory bodies for disciplinary proceedings.

JDI.

The subpostmasters have waited far too long already.
