I'm sure they've said before that men aren't allowed to stay at Nonatus House

I've just put it on iPlayer. I'm not sure why, I don't even really enjoy it any more but I still have to watch it.

Why is it that nonatus either has no rooms or masses of rooms depending on the need of the story? It's like the bloody enchanted tardis houses in Neighbours. This time a whole massive bedsit for Nancy and kid suddenly appears.

The comment from Sister Monica Joan about how she can't believe they didn't think of it before seems like a nod to how silly this seems. The place was full up before with people sharing rooms. One bed might be free now Trixie has moved out so where did they find a bedsit suddenly?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/12/2023 16:51

And now I'm up to them finding a room for the incredibly gay brother.

They have def had men before though. PC plod stayed with them for a while.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/12/2023 16:53

What happened to sister Frances the happy young nun? I can't remember. Hardly any nuns yet. Which I suppose is probably the most realistic thing about the show these days.

She broke her arm in the last Christmas Special and got taxied off to the Mother House never to return!!

PastorCarrBonarra · 26/12/2023 17:05

The nun played by Fenella Woolgar disappeared quite quickly too. But I suppose that’s realistic. The nuns moved as directed.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/12/2023 17:08

Oh yes.

Me and dd are now having fun making predictions.

It's so crap isn't it.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 26/12/2023 17:12

I watched it this afternoon but cringed all the way through it. I watched till the end amd I’ll watch the new series on principle because I’ve never missed it!😂

I’m finding it all a bit sugary sweet now, and the acting especially Stephen McGann is getting to be so bad! I was almost embarrassed at Phyllis “crawling” on the floor in Nonnatus House, it was so cardboard, and she’s a fantastic actress

They haD trainee doctors staying before.

I enjoyed it. It was the usual twee nonsense but it was exactly as I expected and wanted 😂 I watch different shows for different reasons.

thatsnotmywean · 26/12/2023 18:00

I've watched every episode since the beginning and I'm getting fed up with it. No one dies. Everyone makes a miraculous recovery if injured or sick. Sister MJ must be 100 odd by now. She needs to pop her clogs. Also get rid of Nancy.

There's meant to be some trainee midwives in the next series so hopefully we'll get a decent newbie. They could focus on the transition from old to new midwifery and keep it going that way. Also lets see Timmy's love life, that could be a nice side story. (he sets off my gaydar btw)

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2023 21:19

Just catching up now. Who is Bernard? And why doesn't Trixie and St Matthew have a spare room?

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/12/2023 21:26

I'm assuming Bernard is Trixie's Brother's "good friend". I think that's who you are talking about?

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2023 21:32

I'm bored of it how. It should have finished years ago.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2023 21:35

Unicorn34 · 25/12/2023 22:13

I was upset that the cat got checked out of his home onto the street!

Me too. And what's with the local church being St Oswalds. It was All Saints.

DawnButlersGayGiraffe · 26/12/2023 21:37

I was laughing at Tiny Tim solving the car in the way, bringing the tortoise back to life and whatever else he did, as DH kept piping up "it's in his genes."

Whatsthestorynow · 26/12/2023 22:09

I haven’t watched it yet but like others I have to watch it even though I feel it’s past its best. I’m quite glad to hear Trixie’s husband won’t be in the new series as I find him very cheesy & unconvincing. I’m really sorry to hear that Helen George has split with the reverend in real life. I think they live local to me (Walthamstow) & I thought she’d only recently had a 2nd child with him.

She’s apparently with him (her husband on the show) irl now.

Reddog1 · 26/12/2023 22:34

I’d like Jeffrey to get together with Timothy assuming the age gap isn’t too gross (I think they’re 21ish and 30ish which is fine but if Jeffrey is Trixie’s elder, maybe not). Like a PP, I think that Timothy is gay. That said, he had a crush on the pretty au pair that Mrs Turner sent packing a few years ago, so maybe not!

The Matthew actor has had poor scripts to deal with in fairness. The other love interests like the vicar and the policeman appeared at a time when the show was stronger. The Buckles’ courtship was lovely. And Emerald Fennell and the pretty Welsh nurse were sublime. It was like a different show.

MadeOfAllWork · 26/12/2023 22:34

I worry about the actor who plays Nurse Crane. She was clearly not with any of the other cast for the recording and seem rather frail.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2023 22:35

Wish they'd bump off Phyllis. Never liked her, and she can take the Turbers and Matthew with her.

BebbanburgIsMine · 26/12/2023 22:43

I like Nancy and her daughter, does anyone else think there might be a leukaemia storyline there?

I love Phyllis! I hope Linda Bassett is ok, she's one of my favourite actresses, she's fantastic!

Yes, now you come to mention it, it seemed as if her scenes were all filmed separately. And Linda did look slighter, although probably not underweight.

I don’t want to gossip but I genuinely hope all is well and that any illness was kicked to the kerb.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 26/12/2023 22:45

The first few series based on the books were amazing. It really is just twee shite now, but I still can’t stop watching

ConstancetheGardener · 26/12/2023 22:53

Enjoyed it but fed up with the saintly Doctor Turner solving every emergency for the little women of Nonnatus. Also noticed the 21st century idioms creeping in , uptick and winterizing were not 1968 expressions.

riotlady · 26/12/2023 23:47

Just watched it and loved it, the two new mums were both great.

Sister MJ really just needs to pop her clogs and be done with it though, I’m sick of them threatening her death once a season.
