…What else would I love? We’ve got Prime and Netflix and fancy something dramatic and historical. Any recommendations?

I've just started watching The Winter King on ITV X.
I'm enjoying it so far.

ScarlettDarling · 23/12/2023 08:48

Ooh Ive never heard of that. I’ll take a look. Thanks.

Same author as The Last Kingdom

minipie · 23/12/2023 09:17

Ooooh. Sounds good. Thanks both

YungWarthog · 23/12/2023 21:49

Not the same era, but Outlander?

CharlotteStreetW1 · 23/12/2023 21:54

Vikings Valhalla on Netflix - a follow on from Vikings, set 100 years later.

Second this

ScarlettDarling · 24/12/2023 20:59

I’m going to try Vikings Valhalla but dh didn’t enjoy it despite loving Vikings, so I don’t have high hopes.

Outlander
Game of Thrones

PlasticOrchid · 26/12/2023 14:44

Barbarian on Netflix. Two series to binge watch!

Sux2buthen · 26/12/2023 14:51

Last kingdom has ruined me for other programmes. Brilliant programme

ohthatstoohot · 26/12/2023 15:06

I didn't like the first episode and left it but tried again recently and really enjoyed it.

gingersnappz · 26/12/2023 15:08

We're quite enjoying Seen with Jason Mamoa.

AlannaOfTrebond · 26/12/2023 15:29

Two of my absolute favourites! Thanks for starting this thread, I would love some suggestions for more things to watch.

Obviously you've started with the best, but some other series I've enjoyed are:

Knightfall - Knights Templar running around looking for the grail.
Black Sails - Some rather easy on the eye pirates, a mix of drama, violence and the odd hilarious moment.
Jamestown - Follows some of the first women to arrive in America in the early 1600's. Overbearing Brits, Native Americans and everyone else just trying to survive in the new world.
The Borgias - Brilliantly dark machiavellian plots, with Jeremy Irons starring as the Pope and the beautiful Francois Arnaud as the ruthless Cesare Borgia.
Medici - set in Florence at the beginning of the 15c.
Pillars of the Earth and World Without End - mini series adaptations of the Ken Follet epics.
The White Queen, The White Princess and The Spanish Queen - 3 series covering Elizabeth Woodville, Elizabeth of York and Catherine of Aragon, plus all the assorted Henrys, Edwards and Margarets' as nearly everyone else seemed to be called.
1883 and 1923 - two more of my favourites. They are prequels to Yellowstone which is set in the modern day, but you don't need to have watched Yellowstone. 1883 follows the first of the Dutton family joining a wagon train to Oregon but ending up in Montana. 1923 catches up with their descendants 40 years later.
Frontier - 1700's Canada, not the strongest storyline but entertaining none the less.
The Serpent Queen - unusual but still enjoyable telling of the life of Catherine de' Medici.
And last but definitely not least, the fabulous Outlander.

I'm marking my place here as this is a much needed thread

missfliss · 26/12/2023 15:48

Yup following.

Also recommend The Winter King on ITVX

Lovewine1975 · 26/12/2023 17:02

Love Last Kingdom and Vikings!! Currently watching The Winter King on ITVX which is fairly good

Twofoursixeight · 26/12/2023 17:48

If you like high quality/slightly dark period dramas, then you might also like:

Wolf hall
The serpent queen
Britannia
The witch
The Northman
Lady Macbeth (2017)
Alias Grace
The miniaturist
Gunpowder
The last duel
Dracula (BBC)
The king
Harlots
The English
Barbarians

susiedaisy1912 · 26/12/2023 18:36

Oh yes Alanna I had forgotten about Knightfall. Good series

ScarlettDarling · 26/12/2023 18:58

Ooh so many suggestions here, thank you all! I’m definitely after something historic with fab characters to really get invested in. I’m going to have a good look at these tomorrow. Really love the sound of Outlander but it doesn’t sound like it’s available on Netflix or Prime so might not be able to watch it just yet.

Outlander is on Lionsgate. I think there is a free 7 day trial. Give the first season a watch within the 7 days.

We watched Outlander on Prime until series 5 or 6 when they started charging for it. Cheeky bastards.

To be honest I was a bit fed up with the permanent sense of jeopardy by then.

ScarlettDarling · 03/01/2024 21:23

Well, I plumped for Vikings Valhalla and loved it. Binged it all in no time.

Gave Frontier a go but thought it was abysmal!

Started Outlander…only watched two episodes so far and I’ve got to say I’m finding it slow but I’ll persevere and give it a full series.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.May try Barbarians if I can’t get on with Outlander.

Don't give up on outlander yet, it is building the story. Picks up pace from about episode 6 and then doesn't stop. going. Definitely watch the first season.
